The 2019 Women's British Open was held from August hte 1st to the 4th in England at Woburn Golf Club. It's one of 5 major golf championships. Japanese Hinako Shibuno won this event by one stroke over American Lizette Salas. She made a shocking debut outside of Japan. It was her first major in her first LPGA tour. She is a 20-year-old rookie. That news caused a great sensation here in Japan. Why? Because it was the first time in 42 years that a Japanese player has won a major, and only the second ever. Other players have seemed able to reach it, but couldn't. Shibuno was very different from them. She was always smiling and looked very relaxed (confident) while golfing. Her interaction with the fans was amazing, too. She was soon nicknamed "Smiling Cinderella."
Shibuno started Sunday (the final day) in first place with a 2 stroke lead, but lost it with a double bogey on the third hole. However she shined on the back nine. She tied Salas for the lead with consecutive birdies on 12 and 13 and went to the last hole tied for the lead. Can you imagine how it ended? She sank a long birdie putt to clinch the win. The goddess of victory was smiling on Shibuno. I was so excited. She showed us how to enjoy golfing. I hope she has great success in he future.
