Bertold Bayer

We have friends who live in Hamburg, Germany. They are Bertold and Keiko Bayer. Bertold is a retired clarinet player with the Hamburg philharmonic symphony. He is a cool guy. (He climbed Mt. Fuji in one day one of his may visits to Japan.) Of course his wife is Japanese. She teaches music in Germany at a university. She is cool, to. They have one daughter. Her name is Rina, just like our daughter's. We met by chance 15 or 20 years ago at the Kenkatsu Center. I was teaching and they were performing on stage. Anyway, they visit Japan regularly and we meet when our schedules match. This time we went to the restaurant "AzumaKura" (also known as "Bunraku") in Ageo. We have been there before as well as several other places together. This time we talked and ate from the delicious menu provided by this restaurant. There were eight of us. Our daughter and her better half (=husband) as well as their daughter and her S/O (Significant Other) joined us. It was lively. There was English, Japanese and German conversations going on all together. We hope ot meet again on their next visit.

Sumo by Eiko

I went to see Sumo with my husband. We root for Mitakeumi, who is from Nagano prefecture. We waited for 1 hour at the gate as the Sumo wrestlers entered. Finally I was able to take a picture of Mitakeumi. We bought two towels with his name. Kokugikan was full. The atmosphere was lively. Mitakeumi had a match against Ichinojo. Ichinojo is a very big Sumo wrestler. I  supported Mitakeumi by spreading my towel and taking photos. Mitakeumi defeated Ichinojo. The Sumo finished at 6pm and then we went straight home because it looked like to rain. And it was raining when we got off the bus near our house. We got soaked in the rain. Except that, it was a wonderful day.

Alas, poor Rick

I BLOGGED last week that I was into Shakespeare. I wanted to read his plays and then watch performances of the same plays on my TV. I actually read "Twelfth Night" twice so I could understand it better. It is not so long. Then, we ordered a set of his plays on DVD from the BBC in England. They finally arrived after more than a week. I was as excited as a kid at Christmas. I opened the package up on a Friday night. I took out Twelfth Night. I put it in the player. I got instructions from family members on how to set it up to watch it. When it finally was ready I pushed the GO button. Nothing happened. My daughter searched the NET and learned that DVDs from England cannot be viewed on Japanese machines. Woe is me! I called two bookstores in Tokyo. Only Kinokuniya has DVDs of Shakespeare. I went there. They have a very limited amount. And you cannot order them. HOWEVER, I just found on the Internet that you can buy plays from England and watch them on your computer. So, hopefully, some day soon I can say "All's well that ends well."

Adventure part 4

After buying my books at Maruzen it was time to head (go) home. My plan was to go take route 254 to Kawagoe then turn right and go straight to my house. I had parked in front of Maruzen. As it was a Sunday it was free for one hour. I started. I headed for the Imperial Palace. It was 11:45am. Bad News! Traffic was not allowed to enter the main street due to some regulation this day only. I made a quick right turn ans headed to Yasukuni Douri. I found it then wanted to go to Route 8. According to the map this would take me to Route 254. It wasn't very crowded. I drove at my pace. No worries. Then I made an error. I changed my plan when I saw a sign to my right that said Route 8 MEJIRO. I took it, but I was gong to Mejiro station. OMG! Big mistake. I stopped at a store to get my bearings (look at the map and find my location). I was off course. I got back on 254 and then headed straight for Kawagoe. BUT...this route was only one lane all the way. I was expecting the two lane (both sides) route that I have travelled In Kawagoe. Plus there was an accident. It took nearly two hours. I finally got home around around 3pm. I was home, safe and sound. Time to go to he gym, then relax with some sake. I was pooped, but what an adventure.

East god in front of Higashi Ojima station

Friday, September 20, 2019

Adventure Part 3

So, I returned North. My second mistake was that I thought the next god statue was at a park. I had circled the place on my map. Unfortunately for me, this god was at the station not at the park. It is the HigashiOjima station on the Teio Shinjuku line. I asked one lady walking her dog where the god was. She told me that it was in front of the staitn. However there are three entrances to the station. I drove to one. There was no god. I asked one mom and she told me how to get to the god. I followed her instructions and found it. Then I headed for the final god. This is the northern god in front of Suido station. Of course I drove to the wrong entrance. I asked directions again and finally found it. Whew! I took my pictures then headed home. Again I checked my maps. I had a good idea, but just in case I checked the compass in the phone. It said I was heading west. That was good. I  was now driving in Tokyo proper. I recognized some names and bridges and areas. I followed some cars and then I saw a sign for KUDANSHITA. OMG! I think I know that. I made two lefts and followed my instincts. Perfect. I was right in front of Tokyo station. This was great as I wanted to buy some books at Maruzen. Success. (Continued next Tuesday).

Adventure Part 2

It was Sunday, September 31st. My adventure began at 6:50am. That was the time I left my school for Tokyo. I had all my maps and notes in the car. My objective (goal) was to find a photograph the three other gods that protect Koto-ku. They are located in the north, east and south. I already met the one in the west at Toyosu station the week before. My plan was to not use the hi-way. I would go to old Edo by Route 17 and return by Route 254 to Kawagoe and then home. Why? Several times during trips to Tokyo I saw the road signs that said Rout 17 here and there. I also once walked Route 254 to Korakuen. I looked at my maps. It showed that 17 ends at 254 and then picks up again later. Then 17 makes three lefts and then right turns in the heart of Tokyo. This wold take me to Route 14 where the treasures lay. So, I started with route 17. And all went as planned. However it worked so well that I went straight to the southern god in Wakasu campsite first. Oh well. But, I was so happy to see it from the car. I parked, got out and took its picture. Then returned north to the god in the east. Then my second mistake happened. (continued tomorrow)

Adventure Part 1

I left PLANETS TOKYO fun house before noon. My next plan was to have lunch in Tokyo. I decided to walk from ShinToyosu to Toyosu station and get the subway. When I arrived at Toyosu station. I happened upon (found by chance) a statue or, a monument of sorts. It was pretty cool so I took a couple of pics. There was also a placard explaining what it was. I didn't understand the meaning so I photographed it, too. I showed it to one student. She explained that there are four such statues in Koto-ku, Tokyo. They are Chinese gods that protect from the four directions, namely, north, east, south and west. We looked at a map of Tokyo. She searched the Internet for the locations of the statues. We found them and then circled them on my map. With that, my next Tokyo adventure was set. I decided to go and find these three statues on the following Sunday. I also decided to go by car. I also decided not to use the highway. I also decided not to use my car navi or smart phone to assist (aid, help) me. I would use my maps and good sense(?). It was a bold plan. "Boys be ambitious!"

Shakespeare

I've decided to study Shakespeare. By that, I mean read some of his plays and see the movies. I don't really know much about his works except that they are difficult to understand and read. And many people really love his works. So, I want to make the effort here in my old age. During one of my visit to Tokyo I was at the station. I wanted to go to Kinokuniya bookstore to make my book purchases. The info lady informed me that that book store is in Shinjuku and she directed me to Maruzen. (oops) Once there I was mesmerized (completely wowed) by all the books. I bought Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and Alice in Wonderland. Twelfth Night is a romantic comedy. I read the introduction and of course learned many things about The Bard and the times in which he lived. They also wrote about the theaters at that time. The book explains the meanings of many words and facts about the story and his English. That is very helpful. It is not a long play (which is why I chose it) so I actually read it twice. Then I ordered a set of five DVDs which includes this play. I want to see how it looks on stage. I can't wait to watch it.

Alice in Wonderland

Have you ever seen the movie or animation "Alice in Wonderland."? I've seen both. The animation was made in 1951, produced by Walt Disney. Yes, he is Mickey Mouse's creator. The movie with Johny Depp came out in 2010. I like both equally. Have you ever read the book? I read it last month. Actually there are two stories in the book. One is Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and the other is Through the Looking Glass. I was surprised to learn that the movie and animation were made from both stories in the book. For example:
In the Alice in Wonderland story:
1. Alice follows the White Rabbit down a hole to arrive in wonderland.
2. The rabbit is with here all he time.
3. She drinks potions to make her large and small.
4. She meets the Dodo and Bill and the Caterpillar and the Cheshire cat and.
5. Alice meets the Red King and Queen.
6. She plays croquet with  a flamingo.
7. There is a trial to see who stole the tarts.
8. She meets he Cheshire Cat.
In the Through the Looking Glass story:
1. Alice enters a strange world by going through a mirror.
2. She meets the talking flowers.
3. She meets Humpty-Dumpty.
4. She goes to a tea party with a dormouse and
5. She meets Tweedledum and Tweedledee.
6. She meets the white queen.
7. There is a tale about the walrus and the carpenter.
This story is based on a chess game. She has to cross the board to become a queen herself and return home.

Team Lab PLANETS TOKYO

I visited team labs PLANET TOKYO Sunday August 25th. Why? Because Several students took one home stay student there during his visit to Japan. They told me that it was so much fun. Well, it's in Tokyo and I have never been there so I decided that I must go. I purchased a ticket on line Saturday night for 9AM. I went on Sunday and after my b-fast at Rokurinsha I made my way (went to) Shin -Toyosu station on the Yurikamome. I found the place and got in line. Then I got lucky. I struck up a conversation with hte two young ladies in front of me in line. We decided to visit together. One of them spoke very good English. It is difficult to explain every thing that I experienced in this place. First you must take off your shoes and socks and put them in a locker. You are barefoot the whole time you are inside. There are dark rooms. There are rooms that are all mirrors. There are rooms that have water in them. One room had huge balloons. There are lights and CG displays in the walls and floors. It is like a FUN HOUSE. I laughed a lot and really enjoyed the experience. You should try it.

Women's British Open by Atsuko

The 2019 Women's British Open was held from August hte 1st to the 4th in England at Woburn Golf Club. It's one of 5 major golf championships. Japanese Hinako Shibuno won this event by one stroke over American Lizette Salas. She made a shocking debut outside of Japan. It was her first major in her first LPGA tour. She is a 20-year-old rookie. That news caused a great sensation here in Japan. Why? Because it was the first time in 42 years that a Japanese player has won a major, and only the second ever. Other players have seemed able to reach it, but couldn't. Shibuno was very different from them. She was always smiling and looked very relaxed (confident) while golfing. Her interaction with the fans was amazing, too. She was soon nicknamed "Smiling Cinderella."
Shibuno started Sunday (the final day) in first place with a 2 stroke lead, but lost it with a double bogey on the third hole. However she shined on the back nine. She tied Salas for the lead with consecutive birdies on 12 and 13 and went to the last  hole tied for the lead. Can you imagine how it ended? She sank a long birdie putt to clinch the win. The goddess of victory was smiling on Shibuno. I was so excited. She showed us how to enjoy golfing. I hope she has great success in he future.

Rokurinsha revisited

Rokurinsha is an udon shop in Tokyo station. It is on B1 on "Ramen Street". I went once in July. I had a plan two Sundays ago so I added another visit to Rokurinsha for breakfast. I arrived there 7:10am. As I was getting in line, one tourist was anxiously looking here and there and got in line in with me. I struck up (began) a conversation with my usual "Can you speak English?". From there we chatted until hte shop opened at 7:30. His name is Michael, he's from NYC, he's 28 and this is his first visit to Japan. He told me that he has been to several other Asian countries an that his father's name was also Rich. When the staff guy approached us I said "two" and we got our tickets at the machine. Michael said he was hungry so I suggested the most expensive meal. I got the \730 one. We sat at a table. We talked as we ate so I was able to explain some things about Japan that he didn't know. At the end of the meal, I took a toothpick to clean my teeth and he did likewise (the same). I motioned that he should cover this action with his left hand. Then I told him to say "Itadakimasu" as we were finished eating. He was grateful and a good "student". We went outside for a picture, walked down the hall and then separated as I entered the train station. Cool.

At the beach

It was around 7:30 on this clear Wednesday morning. I was laying on my back on the beach with my feet towards the sea. I was alone here. It seems no one else was interested in this place. I considered myself lucky. My arms were straight out from my sides. I was perhaps four meters from the waves. The sky was cloudless and blue. The sea where I had just swum was a greenish blue. The top layer was warm for a meter and then a refreshing cool till the floor. The bottom was sandy then seaweed grew further out. This beach is in a cove, small green mountains on either side. The sun was trying to come up to my left. I’m really white so this is the best time for me to enjoy the sea and beach. The sand is a light brown, not golden. There is a breaker wall 40 meters straight out protecting me and the beach. It wasn’t really necessary this day as there was hardly any wind. The waves were tiny. They gently lapped the beach with a steady “sh… sh… shhh… shh.” Crows were off in the distance crying “ahh, ahh, ahh.” in their guttural style. Cicadas chorused from both sides. They sang “mim, mim, mim, mim” nonstop, to the beat of a slow railroad crossing. An occasional gull flew overhead adding his comments. Great.
Then a sigh. Our breakfast was being served at 8:30. It was time to go. I took one final dip in the sea to clean off the sand then headed to our room to change. We were lucky with the weather this time and I also know that we will never visit Shodoshima Island again. I was lucky, indeed.

Shodoshima

August 13th was the third day of our trip. The weather was still fine. After breakfast we left our hotel and left for the island of Shodoshima. We got to the ferry dock in plenty of time. We got our tickets and drove our car on board. The trip was smooth with calm seas and blue skies. When we disembarked (got off the ferry) and drove straight to the olive center. I am sure you know that the island is famous for olive groves and olive products. We were there for over an hour. We got our souvenirs here. We also had some olive soft cream. Yummy! We then drove to our next hotel. On the way we saw a lot of Shoyu factories. (There was a 'Shoyu soft cream' but we didn't try it. Too Bad!). Before checking into our hotel we drove further along the coast to a special place. It is where the Japanese TV drama "24 eyes" was shot (made). We had lunch there. Then back to the hotel to check in. There are three buildings with two rooms in each building. Our room faced the ocean looking down at hte beach. Excellent. I took a dip in the sea in the evening when the sun was low. Why? Because I didn't want to get a sunburn. Then we had a gorgeous dinner at 6pm. We dined alone. The other guests came at 7:30. That was cool because we watched the sun set. Lucky us!

Otsuka Museum

The next day we were busy. We got up at 5AM and were checked out at 6:00. We wanted to make (be in time for) the first or second tour boat that leaves to see the whirlpools in Naruto. We drove smoothly and got to the dock just before 9AM. We missed the first tour but we got (bought) tickets for the second one. The ship was full when we departed. The ride lasted 30 minutes and was pretty cool. The eddies were not very dramatic (as in the pictures) but it was nice to be on a ship on the sea. The weather was fine again this day. We returned and then went next door to the Otsuka International Museum. Now, this place was fantastic! It is so unique. They have "over 1,000 replicas of priceless masterpieces of Western Art.  These masterpieces are reproduced to their original size using special ceramic techniques." For example the Sistine Chapel ceiling painted by Michelangelo and the Last Supper painted by DaVinci are two of my favorites. They are awesome. And we saw many, many more, some that I know and many that I didn't know. And, you can touch them! That was cool. We only saw half of the works during our 6 hour visit. We may go again.

Atrip to Shikoku

We like to travel. We like to travel by car. So, we made a special plan for this O-Bon season. Our itinerary (schedule) included visits to Naruto Whirlpool (Ouzo), ShoudoShima Island, travel across the area's famous bridges (Naruto-Ohashi, Seto-Ohashi, ShimaNami-Kaido), and go to Dougo On-sen. The trip was from August 10th to August 15th or 16th. We weren't sure of our driving times so we couldn't be sure. On that Saturday, I taught English at our school from 9am to noon and then came home for lunch. We set out at 1:30pm. We had a hotel reservation in Shiga prefecture at a business hotel in nnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. We took turns driving. That means I drove and the Miwako drove then I drove then Miwako drove. We averaged 2.5 hours per shift. There were no major traffic jams this first day. And the weather was fine. We got to our hotel at 7:30. We checked in and visited the only restaurant in the place. It was B-A-D. Why? First, because there was only one customer. Second, it was lit up with so many bright lights. Finally the menu was all meat dishes. We sat down but then left immediately. We took a walk to the other side of the station and found all the drinking shops. We found one that was very similar to Shoya. We ate and drank there. Success!

Get up, wake up , pick up, look up, mix up, get up, close up, back up, clean up, break up, blow up, dress up, hard up, call up, fix up, give up, hang up, hard up, zip up, lock up, pull up, rise up, turn up, warm up.......level up your skills and use these in conversations and in your stories this month.
