Concert at Suntory Hall

I drove my family to Tokyo. Why? My daughter got free tickets for us at a concert at Suntory Hall in Ark Hills. This concert took place in the Chamber Music Garden. We arrived early and had a bite to eat in the court outside. The food was pretty bad. Fortunately, the concert was very good. It lasted three hours including the intermission. There were several quartets. They included performers from Armenia, Germany, Latvia, Russia, Romania, Austria and Hungary. There were also many Japanese performers. It was almost entirety string instruments; violins, cellos, violas and bass fiddles. There was a piano, a snare drum a French horn and a clarinet. At one time there were 25 violinists on stage. This was pretty cool. They were mostly young Japanese ladies. They played "Adagio for Strings" which is the theme song for the movie Platoon. I didn't know that. There were a lot of elderly people in the audience. I noticed that more than a few were nodding off (sleeping) at times. I didn't sleep.

Driving to Tokyo

I was busy last Sunday. My daughter got free tickets to a concert at Suntory Hall in Tokyo. She gets tickets there every now and then (sometimes). So, we were all invited to go. I decided to kill two birds with one stone. One of my goals these days is to explore and know Tokyo. I have made numerous (many) trips to Tokyo by train. I also travelled around Tokyo by subway as well as walking. So, this time I decided I will drive to Suntory Hall to see the concert this day. Usually if we go to Tokyo Miwako drives. She is an excellent driver and is very at ease (comfortable) driving in Tokyo. This time, I took the wheel (drove). First, I checked the Internet to see what the course would be. It was very straightforward (simple/basic). So, we left at noon and headed to Highway 5. That starts at the Yono entrance. I drove over the Arakawa River and into the metropolis. I found Highway C1, but it went left! I thought it would go right. Miwako saved me. Then we got off at the KasumigaSeki exit and drove along the Roppongi Douri as the Internet said. We found Suntory Hall. Success!

Gogendo in Satte by Kesako

I went to Gogenda in Satte with my friends by car last Saturday. We have been there many times. The park shows us various flowers every season. April produces cherry blossoms and rape blossoms. Their contrast, pink and yellow, is awesome. September provides cluster amaryllis. Their reds, yellows and whites are beautiful. In January lovely white narcissus's welcome us. And now it is hydrangea season. They look more beautiful on rainy days such as the day we went. That day was cloudy. The weather was just right to take a walk along the river bank. Satte is located in eastern Saitama next to Kuki city. It's about one hour from Okegawa by car. We often go there to enjoy the seasonal flowers and, of course, chat over lunch. I am looking forward to our next trip there.

Golf by Atsuko

The hay fever season is over and the fresh green is dazzling now. It's a good season for my hobby, golfing. I just can't wait for the next round. I also like practicing and often go to the driving range. Futatsuya Golf Garden is my favorite. However, I didn't expect them to go out of business last March. It was well-equipped. You can practice your approach, putting and bunker shots. There is no comparable place anywhere. You can imagine how disappointed I was. I had been a member there for 15 years. Of course, my goal was to hone (level up) my skills and also just to enjoy hitting the balls. That can help me to relieve stress. I often took part in their golf competitions and played with members who I didn't know. Meeting new people opens my outlook to different things. It is so much fun! I spend a wonderful golf life thanks to that. Now I have to find a new practice range. I am looking forward to new beginnings.

The 119th US Open Golf Championship

The 119th US Open Golf Championship was held at Pebble Beach in California form June 13th to June 16th. I became interested in these golf tournaments this year. One reason is because we can watch them live on TV. The times are very early morning. This fits my schedule to a tee. (Joke) That means that it fits my schedule perfectly. Why? Because I get up early in the morning and usually start teaching around 10AM. I watched Friday and Saturday AM as 156 players tried to make the cut. After two days of golf only about half (79) made the cut. Then these 79 players competed for the next two days. The first two days start very early in the morning, Japanese time. Actually they start near midnight. And they finish around noon. The final two days have the best 79 players competing. The best players tee off (start) last. It was rather exciting. There are too many stories to BLOG about. But one of my goals is trying to remember the players. I know many of their names but I don't recognize their faces. The winner this year was Gary Woodland of the USA. He was tough, mentally and physically. And the course course was so interesting. It is Pebble Beach, California. Have you ever been there?

My bicycle hand covers

I bought a new raincoat. I wrote about that in yesterday's BLOG. And I said yesterday I ride my bicycle in every type of weather. If the temperature is mild,  as in the spring or fall, I go by bicycle. If the weather is very cold, as in winter, I go by bicycle. If the temperature rises (goes up), as in the summer, I go by bicycle. Of course, I wear different clothes for each season. And in the cold weather I wore gloves. Unfortunately I have lost my gloves. I haven't seen them in a long time. I have no idea where they went. They are gone! (with the wind?). So, I was considering (thinking about ) buying new gloves. However I have seen many ladies (not the young kind) rode bicycles with special hand covers. They look to be for noot young ladies. And, they also look very practical. Let's see...they can keep your hands warm in the winter. They can keep your hands dry when it rains. And they can prevent sunburn in the hot, hot summer. So, I went to my favorite bicycle shop in Okegawa. I buy all my bikes there. And now I bought the handle grip covers there, too. Look at the pic. Cool?

My new rain coat

I ride my bicycle to school and back to my home 5 times a week. That is the average. Sometimes it is 4 times and sometimes it is 6 times. So, I have to be prepared for every type of weather. When it is very hot, I have arm and neck covers and a large hat. These protect my body form sunburn. When it is cold I have a heavy coat and warm undies. When it rains I need rain gear. These include rain shoes (not boots), a raincoat and pants. The raincoat is Gortex. It is rain resistant and it breathes. That means that you don't sweat under it. Recently I bought a new one. Why? Because my old one was, well, old. The rain resistance had gone. My arms got wet inside when ti rained. And ti wasn' as warm as before. It was about ten years old. I bought it at Sogo department store. It was red. I really liked it. I even wore it when I climbed Mt.Fuji. There happened to be a typhoon that day. It really saved me. So, the new one is also red. Why? That color is easy for drivers to see me in the rain. Plus, I like red. AT Sogo I met the same lady who sold me the rain bottoms. She didn't remember me but I remembered here. That was OK. The rain pants are just fine. So, I am prepared for many rainy seasons to come.

The Poppy in the Sky by Kazuko

My husband and I went to Chichibu to see "The Poppy in the Sky" last Saturday. The weather was nice and it was a perfect day or a drive. We took the highway from Shiraoka Shobu to Ranzan Ogawa. After getting off the highway we drove comfortably along the country road. When we got near our destination, we found a signboard. It said "5 kilometers to the poppy fields. It will take 5 hours from here in a traffic jam." We thought "That's impossible." because there were no cars either in front of us or behind us even though the poppies were at their best that day. After that, 4 more signboards appeared, one every kilometer. The road was still not crowded and our drive was going smoothly. But, when we reached the point 2km from our goal, we suddenly stopped (halted). There was a continuous line of cars in front of us. We were caught in a traffic jam! That sign was right. Two hours later we finally arrived at our destination. The poppy field spread out over a hill. The vivid red color was so impressive. It was picturesque. But there was nothing else to look at. I was a little disappointed. We were there for only 30 minutes when we decided to return home. By the way, there was longer a line of cars on the way home.

A night out Part 2

So, dining and drinking at Daitorio was fun. First, a toast with beer. Then came Hoppy. I tried it but I didn't enjoy it. It tasted like licorice. So, I got some Japanese sake. The food was good. We also got friendly with the server. His name was Hashimoto. He was a young, cool guy. So, about 8PM we decided to leave. Our next destination was Omiya. At the platform, we suddenly decided to use the Green Car. Unfortunately, many more people were using the Green car. Kenny got a seat. That was good because he is the oldest. Ken and I couldn't get a seat. We had to stand up until SaitamaShinTouShin station. Finally at Omiya we went to one of Kenny's watering holes. Surprise! One of the servers was a friend of mine from Omiya. We left there and went to the station. Kenny left us so Ken and I went to one of Ken's watering holes. But it is full of whiskey, not water. That place was cool, too. I remember trying a couple of whiskeys. I was pretty drunk by then. I decided that we should take a taxi back home. His home is near Ageo station and mine is in the countryside of Ageo. I only remember waking up alone in the taxi. We were lost but I finally got home. That was some fun! Thanks!

A night out Part 1

I've been going to Tokyo almost every Sunday this year. It is my new hobby: exploring Tokyo. Actually it was very beneficial when my brother arrived here in Japan for our daughter's wedding. With the knowledge I gained form those trips to old Edo, I cold advise him on where to go. I also explained about the Yamanote line and how convenient it is. He liked that. He also did research on his own, too.  He found sites telling about Tokyo: where to go and what to do. But, now the weather will make going to Tokyo harder. For example, first the rainy season is coming. (I hope we have lots of good rain.) And then the hot, hot summer. So, I am considering thinking) about what to do. And when Kenny suggested that we go drinking in Ueno on a Saturday night I was very interested. Why? Because I study Tokyo and 2. I want to drink. Another student, Ken, joined us and we went to a very famous Izakaya called "Daitorrio". I couldn't believe that area under the Yamanote line, in the AMEYOKO district. It was so lively. There were people everywhere sitting in drinking/eating shops that were all open in the front. It was exciting! Continued tomorrow.

New Copier

I have three machines that I use regularly at our school. I use then almost every day. They are my computer, my printer and my copy machine. We purchased (bought) the computer and printer. We bought a rather expensive computer this time. I always  bought the cheapest ones before. But now my Internet access is fast. That means I do not get frustrated with waiting or sudden shut downs while watching a site. The printer is cool, too. It was less than the computer. However, it has many parts that need replacing periodically (regularly, OR every so often). Those parts can be expensive. But, it is easy to use and the prints are perfect. Of course it is color. I need that for several documents. On the other hand, we lease the copier. We lease from CANON. We get the cheapest one. It is a five-year lease. It prints only black and white. I remember our first copy machine. When they came to take it away, I felt a little sad. But, now I am used to it. Actually, this time our copier had some trouble. The lease was up in October so the timing was right. And, we got the exact same model as always.

Request

There are three roads that lead to our house from the station. One is A: from the east and then south, B: from the east and then north and C: from the east. We rarely use A to return home. We usually use A when we leave our home. We almost always use B when returning home. The bad news is that a lot of our neighbors also use A. So, we have to share that same narrow road with them. I don't enjoy that because sometimes my tires getting dirty or muddy! So, recently I have been using Route C. It is very narrow, therefore almost no one uses it. There are only a few homes here. Only one car can use it at a time. So, I have to drive slowly. I like driving slowly. And it leads directly to our house! The bad news is that here are a lot of shrubs, bushes and trees and weeds that are very near the road. My concern (worry) is that these obstacles may scratch my car. One place was particularly (very) bad. The other day I happened to meet the owner of those bushes. I asked him to trim them. This was our first meeting ever. He talked for about 10 minutes then we said goodbye. He cut the bushes two days later. Happy! (PIC the bushes on the right side were cut)

My friend's smile by Ayako

I saw my friend smile for the first time in a long time. It was a really happy smile. I had not seen her smile in three years. Her husband died three years ago. He died suddenly from a brain infarction. Then, two years ago her son got divorced. Last year her daughter was fired form her job. Every time I meet her, I see tears in her eyes. She always has negative thinking. However, recently she has changed. She began learning English at Shane. She says that English class is very difficult. However, it looked like fun. However her teacher changed in May and she lost her energy again. She had her old teachers e-mail address. Last Friday she wrote to him for the first time while she was at my house. She immediately received a reply from him. She shouted with great joy. It looked like she had won the lottery! Then last Saturday at my house, she e-mailed him again. I have never seen her look so happy. I want to keep seeing that smile. Unfortunately, he didn't reply to her for a week.
"No matter how old I get I never want to forget the thrill in my heart."

The Wedding

The wedding was wonderful. The bride and groom were a very handsome couple. The chapel, the hall, the dinner were all excellent. The people were all smiles and exuberant. "Thumbs up" to all the staff! My first task was to introduce our family members in attendance to his family and vice versa. The groom's father went first. That gave me a heads up as to what I should do. He read from some notes. I had a list that my wife made. I practiced it but I was nervous. I made one mistake. But all went well. Then there was the wedding in the chapel. I walked my daughter down the aisle and "gave her away." Tears came to my eyes. Next, the reception and dinner were all excellent. I didn't drink as I had to perform again. This time my brother and I were on stage singing "I've been working on hte railroad." When I first heard of the wedding and that my brother would attend, I decided that we will do this song. Our father used to sing it a lot when we were young. It was a tribute to him. That went pretty well. And the audience loved it. Later we all changed out of our costumes and went our own ways. We went out for dinner and drinks with Greg and Mary.

Gregory and Mary Part 2

The next day was Saturday, the day before the wedding. I had to teach until 4:30. But as soon as my last lesson ended I went to Ueno to meet them at their hotel. It was grand! We hadn't met in 12 years. He and his wife looked fine. We were in the hotel lobby. After lots of hugs and black slapping, I suggested that we practice our song. We planned to sing "I've been working on the Railroad" at the wedding. That was the next day! So, we practiced. No worries. Then we went to the other side of the station to meet Miwako and our younger daughter, Eri, for dinner. That was fun. We didn't have reservations, and it was Saturday night in Ueno but we got lucky. We sat at a table for four with no problem. Of course they know M and E from before. Especially Eri visited them in Michigan eight years ago when she was studying up in Canada. Greg and Mary could not use the chopsticks right away. They were also unsure about the food. But once they got started they said everything was "Del-li-cious!" They really liked the Japanese beer and sake, too. We didn't drink much (I didn't drink at all as the wedding was the next day) and all went well. The hotel location was excellent.

Gregory and Mary Part 1

Our elder daughter got married May 19th. My brother decided to visit us here in Japan and attend the wedding. He lives in Florida. My brother is two years older than I am. He is retired. He worked as an engineer in Detroit, Michigan (which is our hometown) for 50 years. He is a great man and a fantastic brother. He came with his wife, Mary, on Thursday, May 16th and left Japan on Saturday, May 25th. For about three months before he came we mailed back and forth about what he would do while they were here. He looked up a lot of information about Japan and Tokyo on-line. He booked his hotel on-line. It is right next to Ueno station. They arrived Narita on May 16th and traveled to Tokyo by train. The very next day they went to see the Shibuya crossing and meet Hachiko. Then a walk down Takeshita-doori in Harajuku and finally to Shinjuku to go up to the top of the government building to see the view. Continued tomorrow.
