US Open Golf Part 1 by Atsuko

The US Open has started. It's the second of the four Major championships. So many golfers have been waiting for it. Actually, my husband and I went to the US to watch this tournament four years ago. We remember it as if it happened just yesterday. We are both crazy about golfing. We are very interested in the American PGA tours because they show us excellent play that is powerful and skillful. So, we wanted to watch it live given the chance (if we had the chance.) My husband found a "Let's Support Hideki Matsuyama in the US" tour. In the blink  of an eye (immediately) we decided to join it. The tour was arranged by LEXUS. There were 4 couples and 2 men in our party. (BTW We do not own a LEXUS). After arriving in America I had two culture shocks. They were 1. There was a flight delay when we changed planes. The members in our group seemed to be agitated OR irritated OR unhappy and grumbled. But the Americans took it in stride. Actually they applauded (clapped) when the airline captain finally came. They also approved smiling. 2. The amount of food was too much for us Japanese. And the Americans showed very good behavior at the restaurant and were always friendly with us and each other.

Last week

I had an up and down week last week. You know what up and down means, don't you? It is the same as highs and lows or good and bad. First of all I started the week with a bit of a cold. It lasted all week but I was 95% better by Friday. On Monday and Tuesday I had a runny nose. I must have used a box and a half of tissues. I was sneezing on Wednesday and coughing on Thursday. As I said I was better by Friday. One bad news was that I had to skip (pass/not attend) my gym workout on Monday morning. But, I did have my massage that afternoon. There was also one more unfortunate thing. I left my wallet at Aeon in Omiya before my Seibu lesson. I left it on the counter when I purchased (bought) a drink after my lunch. Luckily I had some free time on Thursday so I drove there to pick it up. That was one hour of lost time. But I did go it the gym that day. I also did the gardening. One more bad news was Trump's awful meeting with Kim. Another good news was the beginning of the 2018 Soccer World Cup. I wonder what this week will bring.

Odaiba Part 3 of 3

I sat in the Green car. The light above me was RED as I didn't pay for my seat. The attendant finally came around Akabane. I said I wanted to pay now. She said she will send another lady who can do that. Well, she didn't come so, I got off at Ueno without paying for the Green car seat. Yes! It took 12 minutes on the Yamanote Line to Shimbashi. I rode that to Shibaura-Futou, walked to the bridge and then walked across. I went to the beach. I took off my sandals and socks and walked along the shoreline. The sand was really hot. I ran across it to look for a restaurant. I found a small restaurant called "Kua' Aina" in Aqua City. It is Hawaiian. I made sure that they accepted credit cards, and ordered a turkey/avocado sandwich. It was very good. I then walked to the Yurikamome, took it to Shimbashi, then to Ueno and finally back to Okegawa in the Green car. During my time in Tokyo I met and talked to: 3 folks from Canada, An elderly couple from Sweden, a Lucy from France, a Russian woman, Lucas from Czechoslovakia, Ari from Vancouver, Shaunece from Virginia, Branca, Branca and Toma from Serbia and finally Han Seul and Young Hwa, two young ladies from from South Korea. I was back home at 4PM.

Odaiba Part 2 of 3

On this express train the conductor came. While paying for my express ticket, I asked where I should get off to go to Shimbashi. He was a bit surprised and he suggested that I get off at Omiya, take the next train to Ueno and change there. I thought about it and got off at Omiya. Now I was getting confused. Then I got an inspiration. I said to myself "Ricky, you can sit in the Green Car for just a little more." Brilliant!. The train would arrive in a couple of minutes. I went upstairs to buy the Green Car ticket. The lady  smiled and said that I can buy it at the machine at the platform. I went back down and found the machine. I placed my wallet on the scanner (Suica inside) and the screen queried "Which line?" Another Question!! And I wasn't wearing my glasses. The train was arriving. I asked a young couple to help. The Machine said my time was up, and to remove my Suica. The doors on the train opened. The young guy found the line but I had no time. I said Thanks and dashed to the train. I went straight to the Green car. It was packed with people. Luckily, I found an open seat. I decided to pay on the train. (continued tomorrow)

Odaiba Part 1 of 3

You saw Kyontan's BLOG yesterday, didn't you? Well, when I read her story I got inspired. I decided to go to O-daiba to speak to some foreigners. Why O-daiba? Because I can walk across the Rainbow to get there. I have done that three times. It is a nice walk with a good veiw and the weather was quite fine this day. So, I checked the train schedule and found an express that would take me directly to Shimbashi. There I can take the Yuri-kamome train to Shibaura-Futou. Then I can walk to the bridge. HOWEVER! when I got to Okegawa station I realized that there would be a lot of people riding the train this Sunday morning. That means that I may have to stand on the train for a while. That would spoil my adventure I thought. Just then an earlier train came. It was an express that stopped at Ikebukuro and finally Shinjuku. I thought to myself "Ricky, you can take that train, pay a little more but sit till Ikebukuro. Then you can take the Yamanote line to Shimbashi. It may be far, but you can sit all the time." I patted myself on the back for having such a great idea and got on the this earlier train. (Continued tomorrow)

Foreigner Search by Kyontan

Foreigner Search
I got two free tickets from my newspaper company as usual. So I went to National Museum of Nature and Science to see the exhibition “Jintai-the body” on April 11thI recalled that Rick did Foreigner Search at Ueno Park before. So I planned to do one after the exhibition. I brought some copies of Rick’s “Question/Answer list for Foreigner Communication Day”.
After the exhibition, I started to seek foreigners whom I could talk to. But it was not so easy to talk to walking and chatting people alone. In addition, they are foreigners. I needed the strong mind and courage. I searched for a while and at last I found a man sitting on a bench alone. I approached slowly and asked him, “Excuse me, do you speak English?” I opened with the usual phrase. He replied, “Yes!” So I continued. “I’m studying English and my teacher gave me homework to talk to foreigners. Can I talk with you for a while? ”. He answered, “Yes!” Then I asked some questions which were written on the copy plus some more.
It was my first time to talk to a foreigner. And in total I talked to three groups.

My neighborhood

The rainy season is here. It is getting humid or muggy. I will have to wear my rain gear when I travel to and from my school by bicycle. Actually, I never use an umbrella when I ride my bike. You know that that's against the law, don't you? Anyway, I want to talk a little bit about my neighborhood. We live in a rural part of Ageo city. There are many trees and open spaces and rice fields here. We have a vacant lot on either side (both sides) of our house. One farmer kills the weeds on the north side as it is his lot. I take care of the lot on the south side. Besides picking and cutting weeds, I am growing a bamboo island. Actually it is not bamboo. It is kumazasa. You know what that is, don't you? I am trimming them and weeding inside and around it. My hope is to have the island expand. That way there will be less weeds to pick.  There are also many rice fields around here. I really enjoy the scenery they make and the croaking of the frogs. How about your neighborhood?

My GW by Eiko

I spent this Golden Week in Saku City. My husband and I went to Saku in Nagano prefecture on April 29thThat day was my mother`s 98th birthday. My mother, my brothers, my brother’s wife, my husband and I went to a restaurant in Saku. We celebrated our mother’s health.
My husband and I met our old friends at Karuizawa Prince Hotel on May 3rd. We enjoyed talking about "the good old days".
The balloon festival was planned from May 3rd to 5th  But it rained on May 3rd. And, it was windy on May 4thSo the balloon festival was finally held only on May 5th. There were about 50 balloons in the sky. It was so beautiful and cool.
From May 2nd, my daughter’s family came to Saku. We went to the park and shopping with them. My daughter’s husband barbecued as usual. For me, it was fun and a bit tiring as usual.

My GW by Kuma Part 2

The second was about “Trump-Kim meeting” as follows.
The former CIA director, now Secretary of State Mike Pompeo came up on the stage. Pompeo said “Trump-Kim talks” would not just for show and not a gift to Pyongyang. The goal of the meeting remains denuclearizing of the Korean Peninsula. The inter-Korean meeting declared that, but they didn’t include the concrete steps to reach that goal.
Kim was said that if the United States will frequently meet with North Korea, build a good relationship of trust, promise non-aggression, why should we lead difficult lives ? Pompeo added that Trump is going to solve a problem. He’s serious now.
Under such conditions, Japan will be placed outside mosquito net, I think.

(PLUS Before Golden Week, my son suddenly started playing golf. He’s golf-crazy now. He wanted to play on the course. But it was very dangerous. No one knew the destination of his ball.
So, during Golden Week, I went to the golf driving range three times with him to teach how to hit a ball as well as golf rules and manners. I thought he had a good sense for hitting the ball, so he will soon be able to make his debut on the green. I’m looking forward to that day.)

My GW by Kuma Part 1

Overall, I spent quiet days at home. Thanks to that, I could see very interesting TV programs.
The first was about “Slip of the tongue” as follows.
The Winter Olympics was over and Japanese medalists had a report meeting in Tokyo. They said that many medals were able to be taken thanks to the cheers from coaches, family members, associates and citizens.
However, at the almost same time, in another program, a Japanese authoritative Minister expressed that many medals were able to be taken because we supplied a huge budget and hired good foreign coaches with high payment.
I thought that’s true. Winter Olympic events were mostly European sports. But their history in Japan was very short. So, Japan needed coaches from Europe. This Minister often makes a slip of the tongue. If I were him, I’d praise their great achievements first.

Memorial Day USA

Memorial Day is a national holiday in the United States of America.
Here is the info:
Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2018 occurs on Monday, May 28. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.
It is a three day weekend. Maybe people go to beach or on picnics or travel to visit friends and relatives. But the main purpose of the day is to honor those who have died fighting for freedom, etc. in wars around he world.
