Yoshino Day Care for kids Christams Party Part 2

After a break in the show, I am on stage with the other three groups. For the3-4 your-olds we did B-I-N-G-O. I sang, "There was a farmer had a dog..." and they run around the stage bow-wowing like dogs. I then sing "And Bingo was his name-O." We then make the shapes for B, I, N, G and O with our arms and bodies. We do that twice. Then we sang the ABC song. It was a success. Next are the Nen-chuus. We introduce ourselves one by one. We have to come center stage, look at the mommas and papas and grandmas and grandpas and say "How do you do? My name is                . I am            years old. I like             . Nice to meet you." And this year each member had to do their own special walk to the center of the stage from their seats. I was first and did a bird flying gracefully in the sky. Some kids sipped. Some walked backward or sideways or like a robot. Some fun. Finally I interviewed the Nen-Chous. With a live mike I asked "Do you like...?", "Can you ....? and "Are you a ....?" The kids have to answer Yes or No, then make a full sentence.Next they asked me one question. All of this  was practiced many times. It went well. Finally I asked them all two questions. First "Can you fly?" They answer together "No, I cannot fly." Next "Do you like...Rick Sensei?" They said "No, I do not ...! SHOCK!. But lots of fun.

Yoshino Day Care for kids Christams Party Part 1

I go to a Day Care for kids on Wednesday mornings and teach from 10:15 to 1:45. I have four lessons there. The first is 15 minutes with the 2-3 year-olds (see pic). The second is 15 minutes with the 3-4 year olds. Next is 30 minutes each with the  Nen-chus and Nen-chous. There are up to 15 kids in a class. For the Christmas show (O-yugi Kai) we practice from September. The 2-3 year olds are first. They are so cool. They have no idea what they are doing. They don't even know that they are alive! So, it is a challenge. With them we have colored pictures of animals and fruit and vegetables that have a stand. They are placed on the stage so all can see them. The kids sit on the east side of the stage and I sit on the west side. The kids came to me one by one. I ask "What is your name?" and they say "Yukari, desu." But it doesn't really sound like that. Then I say "Tiger! Tiger!" They have to find the picture of the Tiger, bring it to the front of the stage and say "This is a Tiger." But it sounds like "Ji Ji  Taiga". This year it was very successful.

Winter solstice

The winter solstice is my favorite day of the year. Why? 1. Because it's cold. Yes. I really enjoy the cold. I have several reasons but I won't explain here. 2.  I have an awesome view from our front window. It faces east. I can see the sunrise very clearly especially before and after the winter solstice. I enjoy greeting the sunrise from that window most (almost) every morning. So, what is the winter solstice? The sunshine is the shortest this day. Why? Because we, in the northern hemisphere, are farthest away from the direct sunshine. Why? Because the earth's tilt has all the sunshine in the southern hemishpere. OK? It is difficult to explain. Anyway, the days will start to get longer from now on. The next equinox (the day and night of equal length) will be March 21st. The June solstice  (the longest day in the northern hemisphere) will be June 21st and the autumnal equinox will be
September 23rd. Let's enjoy them all.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas everybody! Were you a good boy or girl this year.? Did Santa bring you what you wanted? I and my family have pretty good health so we are very happy with that gift. For material gifts, my family had a present party. We ate a delicious home-cooked Nabe. We made a salutation (Kan-pai) with champagne and then exchanged gifts. I got the alcohol that I requested (asked for). I gave money as that is the easiest for me. (I have no idea what to buy for 20-something-year old young ladies.) The "girls" exchanged gifts, opened them and then marvelled at their beauty and cuteness and perfect timing. I just watched and admired their glee. And then I drank some alcohol. Of course afterward we played "DaiHinMin." Everyone lost and then everyone won. It was a wonderful Christmas. (the pic is the White House Christmas Tree)

Winter Wonder Land

Christmas is just around the corner. Actually, it's next Monday. We hope Christmas to be a peaceful time around the world. I grew up in Michigan, USA. We call Michigan a "Winter Wonder Land". That is because the winter brings lots and lots of snow. Everything becomes white. I remember nights after a heavy snow fall. The skies were gray and the snow fell all day. It was cold and sometimes windy. But then the wind would die out at night. That means that there was no wind at all. All was silent. We would go outside and walk around. Not far, just near our house. The snow was deep in many places. The wind also created (made) drifts. These were snow drifts that started from the ground and ran up to the roof of our house. It was usually in our backyard. The sky was black. That is because the snow clouds had disappeared. The most impressive sight for me, was the snow piled high on tree branches, cars, light pls, roofs, etc. Everything was white. It was definitely a Winter Wonder(ful) Land.

"Do you speak English?" by Imamura Part 2

We stayed at Onuma hot springs. There were many Asian tourists there. One morning we were having breakfast in a restaurant. It was buffet style. We could see the mountain covered with snow. It's so beautiful. I saw an Asian couple sitting at the next table. "Chance!" I thought. So I asked him a very important question; "Do you speak English?". He replied "Yes, a little." "How do you like Hokkaido?" I queried (asked). "Great" was his reply. They finished their breakfast and were leaving. I said "Have a nice day." He replied "You, too." I tried Rick's advice. There were only three sentences.
There were many slopes in Hokkaido. The road was covered with a little snow and very slippery. We had to walk carefully. I bought non-slip bands and put them on my shoes. I was very tired after the trip. But it as a very useful trip for me.

"Do you speak English?" by Imamura Part 1

One of my veteran students is a wonderful lady called Ima-chan. She has been a student and Rick supporter (i.e. fan) for many years. I am a fan of hers, too. I believe her main goal in studying English is to enjoy it. I try to accommodate (satisfy) her as best as I can. Of course, that is the case with all my students. I always suggest to my students to try to use English whenever they have a chance (opportunity). Please read the following story. Ima-chan did just that.
(by Shizuko Imamura) I went to Hokkaido with my friend last Saturday. We wanted to take the Hokkaido Shinkansen, so we travelled from Omiya station to Hakodate Hokuto station. It took about three hours and a half. at first we visited Goryoukaku (see pic). It is a pentagon shaped fortress, Japan's first western-styled five-pointed star-fort. It was built i Hokkaido in 1864 By the Tokugawa government.

Christmas Festival

One kindergarten where I teach had their annual Christmas Show last week. It is a chance for the kids to perform on stage. It is not as Christmassy as an American show, but it was delightful. Of course the kids are cute and their costumes were beautiful. This was my second time to see it. I arrived 15 minutes before show time. Moms and dads were everywhere. They all had cameras. They weren't particular dressed up. My seat was at the corner in the front. They gave me a cushion to sit on. I was lucky because the wall was very nearby and I could lean against it a as I sat. The show began at 9AM. The Principal made a nice introduction speech (see pic). The lights dimmed and then the kids came on stage one group at a time. They were very colorful. Each teacher made their costumes. They all performed well. But, my main interest were the three year-olds. They sang the "ABC" song. I coached them for two months. Actually there are three groups. However one group wold be singing that song this day. I couldn't wait. Actually they were at the end of the show. Finally they were on stage. They sang. Their pronunciation was wonderful! I was filled with pride! Good job, everybody.

A trip by Kazuko Part 2

The Tadami line is the local railway running from Aizuwakamatsu to Koide, Niigata prefecture. But now it is cutoff by the heavy rain in 2011. The Tadami line runs in the secluded region and most stations of it are unmanned. It is said to be the most romantic railway in the world. The autumn leaves season was already over so we seldom saw any tourists. The view from the window of train was picturesque. The ground was covered with snow here and there. The snowflakes fluttered like petals. Then we got off the train at a small station and stayed at a hotel nearby. We enjoyed the local cuisine and hot spring. The next day, we took another route back home. The route was Aizu railway. It also runs in the mountains and the country side from Aizuwakamatsu to Asakusa or Shinjuku. Beautiful scenery spread out along the railway line. We enjoyed watching the landscape go by and eating Ekiben in the train. On that day, we left the hotel at 9AM and arrived home about 5PM. It was a long trip. But I had the time of my life.

A trip by Kazuko Part 1

I went on an overnight trip to Okuaizu in Fukushima prefecture last weekend with my husband. I suddenly came up the idea the night before and booked a hotel on the internet. We left home early in the morning on Saturday. We took the Tohoku Shinkansen from Omiya to Koriyama. Then we changed to the Banetsunishi line. One hour later we arrived at Aizuwakamatsu station. Aizuwakamatsu city is a historical castle town. There are a lot of sightseeing spots. But we didn't see the sights because it was our second time and we had already seen the famous sightseeing spots. The truth is that the purpose of our trip was not sightseeing, rather getting on the train of the "Tadami line". Actually, I'm a "Tetsuko". "Tetsuko"means a woman who loves traveling by train. I'm fond of local railways in particular.

Shopping

Shopping. Now that is something that I rarely do. I needed a few things so I went to my favorite place to shop which is SOGO department store in Omiya. My shopping list included: shoes, a calendar for the school, socks, and a yearly notebook. I wanted brown shoes. I also had a budget. As you may or may not know SOGO is a bit expensive. But I wanted good shoes. I checked them out and found some casual dress shoes. The price was a bit out of my range and these were the same as the ones I bought several years ago. They were comfortable but a bit old-fashioned. I passed and found a cool pair. Nice brown color but they exceeded my price range by 25%. It was wishful thinking to buy them so I passed again. Next I went to get my calendar at LOFT. It was just what I wanted. That was successful. Then I bought two pair of winter socks back at the men's department. Good. Finally I looked at the yearly notebooks. I had my 2017 notebook and found the same one. Of course, I got a different color. For 2018, I got a brown one. (2016 was red and 2017 was blue.) I was finished. I was a bit disappointed about the shoes, but all in all I must say that I had a delightful time shopping.

Party

We have a friend who now lives in Utsunomiya. His name is Kazunori. I first met him when I was single and living in Hasuda. At that time he was in high school. We communicated over the years and eventually we were invited to his wedding. I made a small speech there and my family performed a "SMAP" song to celebrate. Anyway, they have one daguther who is now in high school. The three of them came to visit his mom who still resides in Hasuda. We had an opportunity (chance) to meet while they were here. Our daughter also joined us so I reserved a table for six at ... Futaba. They had never been there before. And it was a cheerful little party. There were not many customers in Futaba this Saturday night and to tell the truth he and I got a little loud as the night wore on. But, no one seemed to mind except our wives. Delicious food was bountiful. I can tell you that the owners of Futaba are very skillful at preparing their dishes. Finally near the end Satoko (wife) and Yukari (daughter) ordered ... Coca Cola! Long time no see, for me. We later said good goodbye with a very delightful memory.

Pearl Harbor Day

It is December 8th in Japan today. However it is December 7th in the USA. Here is the story from the Internet.
This Thursday marks the 76th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, which led the United States to enter the Second World War. A series of invasions by the Japanese into China and rising tension with the U.S. made conflict between the two countries "inevitable" but American military forces did not expect that Pearl Harbor, 4,000 miles from Japan and 2,000 miles from the U.S. mainland, would be targeted.
The Japanese attacked the U.S. Naval base in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. The assault took American forces by surprise early in the morning. The first wave of Japanese fighters fired on the island at 7:55 a.m. Hawaiian time and five additional attacks followed throughout the day, until 9 p.m. Defenders of the military base were caught unprepared as they expected any attack would come from the sea rather than the air. More than 2,400 American soldiers, sailors and civilians died during the attack and another 1,000 were wounded.

MitoKoMon's final home

I have been in Japan more than 30 years. I know all the holidays, customs, habits, hobbies, beliefs and most things Japan. I know things such as Doraemon and cherry blossom viewing and O-Bon, O-Shogatsu, cherry blossom viewing, Hakone Ekiden, Mt Fuji, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Mr Baseball, etc. I also know people such as Tamori, Beato Takeshi, The "Wolf" Chiyonofuji, Japanese green tea, kimonos, the emperor and his royal family, etc. And I know MitoKomon. One of my English groups and I did a skit for the stage a couple of years ago about him. I have seen some of the TV programs about him and his group. They travelled around Japan. Well, I finally saw his final home two weeks ago. I had a free Monday so M and I travelled to Kita Ibaraki. Our goal was to see the autumn leaves. But, I was surprised to learn that the park we visited was his final home. He spent his last ten years writing about the history of Japan from his travels. It was a very beautiful little garden/park. The autumn leaves had just peaked the week before. I think I'd like to retire to a place like that someday.

My cold

I had been coughing and hacking (worse than coughing) and sneezing for over a month. The main problem was a sore throat. I usually get these kind of sore throats when fall and winter come. But this time it was different. It just wouldn't heal. It wasn't painful but it was always there. It refused to heal. So, I finally went to see my favorite doctor in Ageo, Dr Ishibashi. He has a clinic. His son now practises medicine there, too. But I like the old man. Anyway we hadn't net in three years, so after a delightful, quick renewal I had a chest X-ray and blood taken as a sample. He prescribed cold medicine. I took them for  a week. But, when I returned the next Friday nothing had changed. He then prescribed some anti-biotics as he now thought I had a virus. (Actually I believed that from the start. I think I go it pulling weeds about a month ago. I didn't wear my mask then). As of this writing I feel much better and my coughing has diminished (almost disappeared). I have been wearing a mask for all my lessons adults and kids.  I think I will be well for the holidays. Hopefully I can say, "All's well, that ends well."

My November

Another November has come and gone. I have struggled with a cold the whole month. I finally went to a clinic to get medicine on 11/24. The doc thinks I have a virus. Awful! The two main November events every year are our wedding anniversary (The two of us went to Tokyo for a special lunch) and M's birthday (The whole family went to WAIZU to celebrate. Then cake, wine and DaiFugo at home).  Both were wonderful. I enjoyed going out when the weather was fine. I made a one day trip to Nagatori. There I rented a bicycle and cycled around the area. I also visited the Saitama Natural History museum. I went to Ueno zoo (see pic-that's a panda.) I saw many animals and met many foreigners there. I spoke English, Spanish and French. Miwako had a big band concert. She plays the piano in the group. Unfortunately I couldn't go. I was back in the gym full force. I do running exercises and I started arm muscle training. Finally this month, I finally finished our textbooks. These are for the kids at our school. I made many corrections and simplified the original text. Then I added a new part which helps the kids learn basic English and pass the Eiken 5 test. We are now ready for December.

Foreigners at the zoo Part 3

When Louise told me that they were from Ireland, I asked if she was an Ambassador. She said no and then I asked Devan “How old are you?” He said “I'm 5 and I’m an American.” Louise said we was born in New York. I then asked Conner his age and he said nothing, only raising his free hand (Mom was holding the other one) and showed me four fingers. The boys had the most beautiful orange hair and white skin.
I also used Spanish and French this day. I asked the guy from Chile “What time is it?” in Spanish and then introduced myself in his native tongue. We almost had a conversation but I couldn’t understand. Later when I met the French couple I said very politely “Merci Beaucoup” when we departed. He replied “Ce moi”. M checked with her sister who lives in France and told us that it means “My pleasure”.
The Canadian guy and the 2 NZ ladies were standoffish. And when I talked to the NZ couple (late 50s), I talked with the gent while the woman said nothing. She was staring at me as if I had three eyes! There were a few more conversations but that's enough for now. It was a toatlly fun day. And the best new it that. I got in for half price.
