Meeting a freind

In the photo you can see Miwako and me with two other people. The gentleman is our friend from Germany. His name is Bertold. The Japanese lady is his wife, Keiko. We have been friends for the longest time, maybe 20 years. We first met by chance at the Kentatsu Center. I was teaching an English lesson there and they were performing on stage at the Hall. He played the clarinet and she played the piano. He has since retired. He was a professional musician and played in a German Philharmonic orchestra. Keiko is a music professor (piano) at a University in Hamburg where they live. They visit Japan regularly to see her father. We met for lunch at Sogo. It was cool because he and I talked the whole (entire) time during lunch and our wives talked together the whole time. It was as if  we were in two separate worlds for a couple of hours even though we sat a the same table. Bertold told me a lot about his home town and his Subaru car, which he loves. It was nice to have met them again. I was very fortunate to meet them and have their friendship.

Drive safely

My school is very near Okegawa station. It is also on the road that leads to the railroad crossing just south of the station. I go to Mine Department regularly. That is also in front of Okegawa station. I use the station once or twice a week to go to a lesson. So I am constantly using the area on short trips by bicycle and sometimes by car. Recently I have noticed (seen) a lot of policemen and many patrol cars around here. Several times in front of my school, patrol cars have stopped motorists (drivers in their cars). They used their red lights and a loud speaker to tell the car owner to "pull over" as we say in America. I'm not sure of the results. And then in front of Mine Department and Okegawa station I see policemen on foot standing and waiting near the crosswalk. If they see a violation (bad/illegal driving) they radio ahead to the police. Those police stop the car or motorbike. They then talk to them and sometimes give them "a ticket". A "ticket" is a paper with the violation on it and tells the driver how much they have to pay. Everyone, please drive carefully always.

Family Party

Once upon a time the duck family had a birthday party to celebrate the older daughter's birthday. They chose to have the party at a nearby restaurant. There were five of them papa and mama duck their two daughter ducks and birthday duck's beau. The beau wanted to bring a bottle of good red wine to the party so they called  the restaurant and they said it was OK at no extra charge. (His business is selling wine and related articles.) So they were all set for a 6:30 get-together. BUT... the mama duck said that she would pick papa duck at work at 6:20 by car. But, she had to get the B-day cake for after the party and would be late. Papa duck waddled over to the restaurant, telephoning on the way that he would be a little late. He arrived at 6:40. Mama duck arrived at 6:55. Young daughter duck was coming from the big pond and she met some friends on the way. She arrived at the station around 7PM but got lost getting to the restaurant. She appeared at 7:20. In the meantime, birthday duck called and said there was a traffic jam in the river and she would be late. She met her beau and they both swam very hard and got to the restaurant at 8:20. They all had beers, excellent wine, delicious cuisine and lots to quack about. All's well that ends well.

September Equinox

Last Saturday marked the September Equinox 2017. Here are some facts from the Internet.
1.The equinox marks the start of fall in the Northern Hemisphere and the conclusion of the summer months.
2. It marks the day that the sun crosses the “celestial equator,” or essentially the equator.
3. After the equinox the days in the North get shorter and winter arrives.
4. The days in the Southern Hemisphere get longer as summer arrives.
5. In the Northern Hemisphere the signs of fall are pretty easy to spot, typically days with temperatures of 70 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, and nights of below-freezing temperatures.
6. As the Northern Hemisphere gets deeper and deeper into fall, dawn will come later in the morning and the sun will set earlier at night.
7. Equinox is used to mark spring and fall while the solstices mark summer and winter.
8. Next is the December Solstice which occurs on Dec. 21.
So, the leaves will be changing colors soon. Do you have any plans to go and see them? We used to do that when our kids were small. However, we haven't been for a while. Maybe we'll go this year.
By the way, where do yo think that photo is from? It's from my roots...Poland.

Respect for the Aged Day

Last Monday was the Respect for the Aged Day here in Japan. From Wikipedia: Respect for the Aged Day is a Japanese holiday celebrated annually to honor elderly citizens. It started in 1966 as a national holiday and was held on every September 15. After 2003, Respect for the Aged Day is held on the 3rd Monday of September due to the Happy Monday System. This national holiday traces its origins to 1947, when Nomadani-mura proclaimed September 15 Old Folks' Day. Its popularity spread nationwide, and in 1966 it took its present name and status.
I found that other countries also have a Holiday called "Grandparents Day". It has the same goal; to pay homage (honor) and respect to the elderly. It looks like most countries regard elderly as 65 years old. So, that includes me! When did Grandparents Day begin in other countries. Here is a list:
AUSTRALIA  2011, CANADA 2014,  FRANCE 1987,  GERMANY 2010,  ITALY  1990,   HONG KONG 2005, MEXICO 1983 POLAND 1964, UK 1990, USA 1979. How about you? How did you celebrate the day?

Party and Karaoke

After visiting Kenny's garden, we all met at a restaurant in the Minami Ginza district. There were 14 of us. That may be a new record. There was also a couple of first-timers including the manager of the lesson. He is a KenKatsu employee. He is a very hard-working gent and I think he enjoyed the party. The rest were students and myself. The food was good. The drinks were good. Most people sat in groups and talked but later on, people moved around to chat with others. All went well. When it was time to leave, five of us decided to go to a Karaoke place. It was right next door so it was very easy. The five of us were me, Kenny, Katsuyoshi, Nobuyuki and Mayumi. This party was also a lot of fun. Everybody sang their fair share. I didn't drink alcohol here. And since it was an "All you can drink/eat" arrangement, I gobbled down as much popcorn and ice cream as possible. That ruined my diet but it kept me in a singing mood. We finished somewhere around midnight. I took the train home. I got on just as I arrived at the platform. Nice timing and then no waiting for a taxi. Great! Thank you all again.

Pre-party party

The good students at the KenKatsu lesson on Saturdays decided to have a party after our final lesson September 9th. We had dinner and drinks at a restaurant near Omiya station. Before the party Kenny and I went for a couple of warm-up drinks. We have been doing this for a while and it has became our custom. Sometimes there are two or three or even four of us but this time just us two. And when the party is on the west side we go to a drinking-standing bar on the west side. However this time the restaurant was on the east side. Kenny led me to a drinking-standing bar in "his garden" on the East side's Mianmai-Ginza. Well, this place was very different from the west side. The west side has very quiet people and the bar is made of oak. There is a serious atmosphere. The east side place was different. It was energetic. It was alive. As soon as we entered some woman shouted to me, in English,  to join her group. Of course everyone is standing along simple wooden tables. There are "hors devourers" on a large counter. You can choose one or two and pay the "bartender". He also serves drinks. The drinks come from a soda fountain like a Coca Cola machine. We got our shouchu from there. It was really cool. Nice Garden, Kenny!

Asuka by Kuma

I will talk about our pet cat named Asuka. This female cat was a stray cat. About thirteen years ago, she got caught in a traffic accident. On that day, the traffic volume was twice as much as usual. Why? Because it was at the end of the month. Just around that time, my son was on the way home from the office and happened to find her lying on the roadside because she couldn’t walk. He carried her to the nearest animal hospital and became a foster parent.
Let me explain about a foster parent. Who will pay for the expenses incurred in the hospital from now is a serious matter. My son declared that he would be a foster parent and pay all fees. “That’s good enough for me,” the doctor said. At that time, my son was a bachelor in the latter half of his twenties and named this cat Asuka. Asuka got surgery. The operation was finished. The doctor said “It’s very successful. It’s possible for her to walk soon. About two months of hospitalization will be necessary for her rehabilitation. Asuka is thirteen years old and senior now. However she always brings us a lot of pleasure and joy. Thanks, Asuka.

Sendai by Yoko Part 2

The second time, I went to Sendai again with my husband and my daughter from August 23rd to the 27th. She took a vacation. We went to the Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium on August 26th. We saw performances by dolphins and sea lions. The dolphins jumped high, turned forward and twisted. They were very cute.
After looking around the aquarium we went to Sendai Arahama elementary school near the sea. It is the ruins of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The tsunami reached the second floor of the school. Elementary school students and some people near the school escaped to the 4th floor and the roof.
We went to the nursing home to meet our mother 3 times this August. During our stay in Sendai, we cleaned her condominium except when we visited her or did sightseeing. My resolution of this year is cleaning up her condominium. I went to Sendai 5 times this year. However, it is not enough to clean up there completely. We had to carry some garbage back to our home by car because of the garbage collection day. I’m going to go to Sendai as many times as possible.

Sendai by Yoko Part 1

I went to Sendai twice this August. My mother-in-law lives in Sendai. She lived alone in her condominium, but she moved to a nursing home in January this year. The first time, my husband and I went to Sendai was from August 4th to the 7th. As the health insurance card of elderly people is renewed every August, we needed to give her card to a clerk in the nursing home. Her card was mailed to her condominium by registered mail in July. But nobody lives there, so her card was mailed back to the post office. It was kept in the post office for a week, but after a week it was mailed back to the ward office. So, my husband had to go to the ward office to get it on a weekday that was August 4th. Finally, he gave the card to a clerk of the home.
On August 6th, we went to Sendai Tanabata Festival. There were so many Tanabata ornaments. Every ornament was made of paper. Many paper flowers and origami pieces were pasted on them. The ornaments were made carefully and thoroughly. They were so beautiful and amazing. I love them. After seeing Tanabata Festival we went to see the monuments of Shizuka Arakawa and Yuzuru Hanyu in front of the International Center subway station . Shizuka Arakawa was born in Tokyo and moved to Sendai when she was 1 year old. And Yuzuru Hanyu was born in Sendai.

The Tooth Fairy

Look at the photo. Do you know what that is? It's a tooth! One of my students lost a tooth last week at her lesson here. That is the tooth. Miwako said "I heard when you loose your baby upper tooth you should throw it from the bottom to upper (means to the sky). So you will have nice and healthy new tooth. When you loose your baby lower tooth you should drop it from upper to the ground. So you will have nice and healthy new tooth. I used to do that when I was a child." In America we have a different custom. I remember vividly (quite clearly) when I lost one of me teeth. I was in the basement of our home and me and some friends were playing down there. I felt the tooth with my tongue. It was loose. It was wobbly. So, like most kids, I pushed it back and forth with my tongue, Finally it came out. So, here is the custom. That night I put the tooth under my pillow as I slept. The next morning when I awoke (woke up) I checked under the pillow and Lo and Behold! The tooth was gone! In its place, there was a quarter. Some money. How did that happen? The story is that the "Tooth Fairy" came. She took the tooth and left the money there. I was really looking forward to the next time a tooth came out.

New Projects

Let me see. I quit playing bridge last June. There are many rules and know-how and communication tools that a player needs to know in order to succeed. I have forgotten all those rules. And recently I quit practicing the violin. At the same time I sold my violin. And to tell the truth I don't miss it. It was an excellent learning experience and I really did enjoy it. But that is also in the past now. So, what do I currently do with my time? One new project is You Tube. I wanna be a You Tube STAR! I wanna teach kids how to pass the Eiken exams on YouTube. Basically that means how to understand English and its grammar. In order to do that, I have to record myself. That's no problem. But then I have to make a movie. Two things make this difficult. Number One: I have to perfect my presentation. That means that I have to write a script in Japanese, have Miwako correct it and then rehearse and finally record it. Number Two: I have to make it into a movie to upload to YouTube. Well, I tried a couple of times. It is actually fun! However, I see (know/realize) that there are many things I have to learn about "uploading to YouTube" and using Microsoft Movie Maker. The hardest part is that they all use language that I don't understand. I have to learn it. So, it will take time. What will I quit next?

SUP Part 2 by Hiromi

It was easy for me. But my darling and my daughter couldn't keep their balance and fell into the sea. We laughed at each other. After some practice, we paddled smoothly and went to the center of the bay.
Dawn was starting. A little light shown on the horizon. The sun was rising little by little. It was amazing! I have never seen such a beautiful seascape. All of us held our breath. We all were moved. Our instructor Tanaka-san got an inspiration and took some pictures. It felt like a whole new world.
We stopped paddling and looked at the rising sun about 5 minutes. Suddenly, Tanaka-San called with "Let's drink some coffee! Come on!" We were surprised but we went straight to him. He brought a bottle of hot coffee and some snacks. I sat on my surfboard and got a cup of coffee. Wow! This was a special time for us. During our rest, a few sea turtles popped up here and there. This charged our batteries.
We really enjoyed our morning SUP. We will never forget this experience. Tanaka-san, thank you so much for everything. We had a marvelous time with you.

SUP Part 1 by Hiromi

Do you know SUP? SUP is a fashionable water sport. SUP means 'Standing Up and Paddling on a surfboard'. I knew this sport for the first time recently. And we got a chance to SUP at Iriomote-Island this summer.
By the way, do you know where the Iriomote-Island is? This island is located 400km far from Okinawa-main Island. We used a plane and a ship when we went there. It's my second visit to the Iriomote-Island. My first trip was when I in university. So, I have been there twice in my life.
One month ago, we made a reservation for SUP on internet.  We chose the morning activity called 'SUP in dawn'.
The day of SUP, we got up as early as possible. Because our appointment with the  instructor was at 5AM. That’s before dawn. We met at the parking area near the sea. There was just darkness and deep silence around us. After our greetings, the instructor Tanaka-san told us "You're really lucky. The waves are quiet enough to SUP for beginners. On the top of that, it'll be sunny today. Let's SUP and go to watch the rising sun".
He explained easily how to ride a surfboard. He told us 2 important points:
1. We have to stand on the middle of the surfboard.
2. We have to look ahead. i.e. don’t look down.

"Millionaire" Part 2 by Yummy

We also enjoyed taking a walk along the seashore, finding some beautiful seashells, exploring a new path and having a BBQ there.  After dinner, we always talk or watch TV, but I remembered Nobuyuki-san’s story.  I suggested we play cards.  Nobody knew how to play ‘ Dai-fu-go’, but as I had checked the rules of the game in advance, I explained them to everybody.  Once we started, all of us came to like this game and got in full swing.  We played it again and again. I became a ‘millionaire’ several times.

We spent two nights there and left the island.  On the way to my parents’ house, we dropped by the photo studio to take a family photo because I had a free ticket.  Though we didn’t wear suits and our hair was untidy, the studio staff gave us a lovely smile and took some photos of us.
The final day we prepared to go back and had 30 minutes left. My mother wanted to play that game once more.  Yes, ‘ Dai-fu-go’.  We enjoyed the game until the last minute. Thanks to Nobuyuki-san, we had a precious family memory.  Kudos to Nobuyuki-san!

“Millionaire” Part 1 by Yummy

How did you spend your Obon holidays ?  I went back to my hometown Fukuyama, which is in Hiroshima Prefecture, with my family. We stayed there three nights.

On Aug. 12th we left for Fukuyama. My parents and my elder brother were waiting for us at the station, and all of us headed straight for the ferryboat landing.  We always visit a small island because my parents own a cottage to relax there. After a 20-mitute-ride on a ferry and a 5-minute-drive, we got to the cottage.
The cottage is only 50 meters off the small beach and really cozy and convenient.  You can swim and you can fish. You can also enjoy riding a jet ski if you have one. When it is very hot outside, we drop a fishing line, leave it , go back to the cottage and wait for a fish to come.  As soon as the fishing rod moves, we run and wind the fishing reel.  Really convenient.  We  enjoy the cool wind and the beautiful sunset from the cottage, too.
My children used to swim a lot, but as they got older, they came to enjoy fishing.  They learned how to fish from my father.  As for me,  I can’t bait a hook, so I don’t fish. They caught some sillagos (キス) and blowfish. One of the blowfish my daughter caught this time was quite big, about 25 centimeters long and we were all surprised.

My violin...is no more. I quit taking lessons. I sold my violin to a student. I kept my textbook and put it in a drawer. "How come?" you ask. The reason is simple. I want more time. When I turned (became) 60 years old, I thought that I want to learn about music. I really knew almost nothing about "do" or "re" or "mi" and the rest. I first thought about a guitar but chose the violin one Thursday night when a high school student let (allowed) me to try hers. It made a lovely sound. I bought  a used violin from another violin. I found a teacher (via a different student) who came to my school to give me private lesson. She was great. My violin experience was fantastic. I did learn about music. I also heard some very beautiful music from my teacher. I had the chance to play before an audience perhaps 7 or 8 times. My playing was never very good; average at best; maybe even less. But I did practice hard and sometimes I felt it sounded like music. Now I have several new goals. That includes writing a book or two, and You Tubing. Recently I thought I need more time to complete these newest challenges. I chose to quit the violin to get that time. It as a fantastic experience and I am certainly glad I did it. I also want to say "Thank you" to all for your support.
