My August

Today is the final day of August, 2017. I really enjoyed it. First of all, I did not have to go to three kindergartens every week as they are closed during the summer. That means I had more time to do things. I decided to make the effort to do a lot of work on my computer. I finished my Kids Homework for my school. That happened at the very beginning of the month. It was just in time to use them. On August 1st we did an interview with "Shopper". That is a free bi-monthly circularity. Miwako did a  lot of work rewriting it. It will appear tomorrow. I made three new pages for my English HP. They are to sell our materials. Miwako made the Japanese version. I also worked hard to publish a paperback book on Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). I had to learn everything "on the fly". That mans that I learned as I was doing it. I e-mailed a lot of questions to the KDP support people and they were very kind with assistance. I also did the same thing with Windows Movie Maker. That was a new, too. We are making videos on How To Teach English for Kids to upload to You Tube. I had  a Karaoke party with my nice students from Omiya. I wrote some of my book about teaching. I got a shave at the barber shop. I went to the gym twice a week. I had two violin lessons. I rented two videos (see pics). And, I drank more than usual. My weight was up every Monday morning by 2 kilo grams and then back down by 2 on Saturday. I guess that's it. How was your August?

Karaoke

I went to "Warehouse" in Omiya two Sundays ago. Five students and I had a Karaoke party there. The last time I sang Karaoke was with Miwako, maybe four months ago. I really don't remember. These students are from the Seibu  Cultural Center which is very near The West Omiya Police station. Warehouse is not far from there either. We have a Karaoke party annually. That means "every year". And sometimes we have a drinking party. They are always in the afternoon. So, this party started at 1PM. We were there for three hours. One student didn't sing at all but, she was a very good listener. There were two other gents and two other women there. We all had a good time singing and talking and, of course, drinking. The place has an all you can eat fare and we always BYOB (Bring Your Own Booze). This time there was beer and Japanese sake. The first hour and 15 minutes or so was eating and chatting. Then we got into singing. It was non-stop. Everyone sang 5 to 7 songs, I think. It was a great time. The only bad news was that I missed my bus after the session. However, I only missed it by 10 seconds. Thanks, everybody!

A visit to the barber

There are things that I have to do. For example; weed our garden, take out the garbage, work, brush my teeth, shower, go to the toilet, shave, and others. Among those, the one thing that I really hate to do (do not enjoy doing at all) is shaving. But, of course. I must do it. How came? I have to be presentable (look good) for my students and/or moms. So, I shave every morning except Sundays. However, during the O-Bon Holidays, I didn't shave for six straight days. It was H-E-A-V-E-N! On top of that I made an appointment at the local barber to get a shave there. It is a mom and pop place. It was very enjoyable. The wife shaved me. She lathered my face and put towel(s) on it. She used a straight razor. I enjoyed the scraping sounds as she pulled the razor over my bard and also searched around my chin and cheeks for stubble with her free hand. She shaved my forehead and around my ears. She trimmed my nose hairs and eyebrows. It was very relaxing. It took about 20 minutes and cost 1,940yen. I think it was worth it. I am planning on doing the same thing durin the New Year holidays, too. I can't wait.

Solar Eclipse

There was a solar eclipse on Monday in the USA. Wikipedia said "On Monday, August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse was visible within a band across the entire United States. It passed from the Pacific to the Atlantic coast. In other countries it was only visible as a partial eclipse. It is frequently called  the "Great American Eclipse". I saw a lot of news about it on TV, especially CNN News. They showed the best area to be in to view the total eclipse. That is the best. The newsperson said "To only see the partial eclipse (not total) is like (similar to) going out on a first date. But, to see a total eclipse is like your wedding day." Then he added "But, I guess it depends on your wedding day." Many people drove and flew miles and miles to get to the best viewing places. Of course, many people visited from around the world.  I had to teach so I couldn't go but I looked at many videos on the Internet. I could only imagine the thrill everyone felt at the viewing. However I did see a solar eclipse here I Okegawa. It was in 2009,  I think. Of course, I wore my special solar eclipse viewing glasses. I still have them. (The PHOTO is from NASA. The view is from space.)

twice, etc by Satomi

#1 I carried as many books as possible from the first floor to the second floor. However, I didn't have enough strength. So, I had to carry them twice.

#2 A man went to the forest to pick firewood. He had to carry more than enough back home. He became very tired and hungry. He saw a small house over there (along the way). He knocked at the door twice. However, there was (came) no reply. Then he called in as loud a voice as possible. An old woman came out of the house. She made dinner for him.

Twice, etc by Mako

I am not good at English. I applied for the basic (KenKatsu) class. However, I cannot keep up with the class at all.To make matters worse, I wear (use) a hearing aid as I have hearing loss. That is why I cannot hear enough. So, every Saturday before this lesson I feel blue (down/bummed)). By the way, I play music at a live café called "T's pal Collassez" in KitaAgeo every Wednesday night. Some of he older gents (gentlemen) support (encourage) me as I cannot at the guitar very well. I mainly try folk songs. I am also practicing songs in English. I want to be able to pronounce well and to sing while understanding the meaning of the songs. That is what got me into the KenKatsu class. At the Marine Day event I sang "Country Roads" once or twice and it frustrated me. But thanks to our practice I became able to sing it. Anyway, if possible please come to the live house where I play. Rick, please come wit our wife and play. Don't forget your violin and carry it tenderly. I had fun singing and performing with my KenKatsu classmates. Thank you very much.

Greetings

Well, everybody, how was your O-Bon? I must say I worked very hard and then drank enough alcohol to last for a while. Anyway, before O-Bon began I asked my students to make a story. They have to use these five words: twice   enough    however    possible   carry   I will post some of their work. In the meantime...
Once upon a time there was a farmer who lived in a valley. He built his log house close to the small river that ran through that valley. He lived here happily with his wife and two children. One day he needed to make a new field to grow potatoes. However, there was this tree. He had to cut it down. He decided to let his son do the job. He thought it possible as the boy was now 14 years old, quite big and it wasn't really a large tree. One fine spring morning the whole family went out to the site. He let his daughter carry the ax. The farmer knew she was strong enough to do that. It took all day but just as the farmer had thought, the boy chopped down the tree and then he and his son cut all the lumber into wood for their fireplace. They would be warm all winter because they had twice as much wood as last year.

Marine Day Event by Masako

I was very nervous in the English skit.
But, I'm glad that I could talk in front of everyone.
I also enjoyed singing songs with all of them.
It was the piano, violin, ukulele and guitar playing.
I could not play the guitar well, but  was touched.
And, I was very happy to sing songs in English.
I thought the other people's performances were amazing.

4 of 4 The return home

We left SenJoGaHara and headed home. It was mid-afternoon. On the way to Lake ChuZenJi, we stopped very briefly (f\or a short time) to check out (look at/admire) the RyuZu Falls. Then to the lake. There were hardly any cars. It was very foggy and you couldn't see the Lake! The boat rides/tours were all canceled for the day. There was no admission (entering) to view the KeGon falls because you couldn't see them. I got a vanilla soft cream and I ate it as we watched the fog. (M had ice cream at Yu Falls.) We then set out. I drove down the IroHaZaki and then on to the NikkoUtsunomiya line. But! I missed the turnoff to connect to the TouHoku highway. We went past and then came back. This was the only time we used M's Smart Phone Navi all day. Once on the highway it was straight to the KenOuDo and then home. We met a few traffic jams, but nothing serious. I drove all the way home. No worries. An excellent Sunday!

A Day Trip 3 of 4

We finally crossed the pass and Nikko sprawled (appeared) before us. We drove down to Lake Yu and the Yumoto  hot spring village. Memories came back and we talked about some of them. Then we went to one of my favorite places in Japan; The Yu Waterfall. It is majestic! It also roars as it comes down he side of he mountain. I have been here in all four of the seasons. I like the winter Yu Waterfall the best. From there we went to SenJoGoHara. Miwako dropped me off at Akanuma bus stop. That is one entrance to SenJoGaHara. I changed shoes. I put on my hiking boots and some socks. I got my binoculars and set out. Actually, mid-afternoon is not the best time to see the birds. I have been here more maybe a dozen times and again many memories came back to me. The wooden road has been rebuilt so it is straight and flat. I only had one hour. The first bird I saw was a Nobitaki. He sat in the open field on the top of a hard plant very proudly. I saw several of these birds later with their "wives". I also had a close encounter with a bush warbler (Japanese Uguisu). I took a video of him to record his singing. Actually there were three in this area. Their singing was off key...not at all beautiful. Actually it was comical and cute. But they were still young. I got back to the car in an hour as promised and we set out again.

A Day Trip 2 of 4

We understood the warning, but the car drove as always. A yellow "oil emoji" appeared on the instrument panel. Cool. So, M drove us to Numata where we exited (got off of) the highway. At the very first convenience store we stopped and called VW. They explained that the oil was low. We needed to add some. They also explained that we can only use the highest quality oil. The nearest VW dealer was in Maebashi. OMG! I asked the store guy, and he said that there was an Auto place just up the road. We drove  there in 5 minutes and got high grade MOBIL 1 oil. The man put it in for us. I started the engine. The oil emoji had disappeared! Hooray! With lots of cheering and high fives, we hugged and said good-bye to the oil guy. We promised to write each other often and set out again. Now, I was driving. We encountered (met) some heavy traffic in Numata. It got better, and finally was gone after the Oze turnoff. It was smooth sailing (driving) all the way to Oku Nikko. On the way, we stopped for some fresh roasted corn. It was so sweet! We also stopped at the foot bath place. Here you can relax with your feet in hot spring water for FREE! BUT... it was not there any more. They made a smoking room out of it. Ugh. So, on to Nikko. Driving the windy mountain road, up and down, left and then right, right and then left was so much fun!

A Day Trip Part 1 of 4

What is this flower? Do you know?
I hadn't been to Nikko for several years. Actually I cannot remember the last time. And now, a(since) it is the summer, I have free time I do extra work at my school. You know, making puzzlers, or texts, or homework for my students. I also have several new projects. Of course, Miwako is busy, busy, too. So, we need a vacation every once in a while . We took one last Sunday. This is the plan: Leave home at 8AM. We drive to Numata on the KanEtsu Highway. We take the Romantic KaiDou (Route 120)  to Oku Nikko, via the Konsei pass. Visit Yu Lake and Yu falls. Then we do some bird watching. I do my bird watching at SenJoGaHara. Next we go down to Lake Chuzenji, perhaps for lunch. Finally, we drive home using the Touhoku Highway. Arrive home maybe 6PM. M will drive the highways. I will drive the mountain roads. Nice plan, eh? Well, we left home at 8:30, not 8AM. But, no worries. I wore my driving clothes. All loose, very comfortable clothes including my sandals. But, they are for driving, so no worries. We didn't use the KenOuDo this time. We used the local roads and got on the highway at Higashi Matusyama. After 5 minutes, the car sounded (rang) a warning bell and announced "Your oil is low. Please remedy (fix) that." Worry!

A trip to YuFuin by Kazuko

I went to YuFuin for an overnight trip. As you know, YuFuin is famous for its hot springs. I departed for Oita airport form Haneda. One and a half hours later.my plane arrived. It took two hours from Omiya by bus to Haneda so, I felt that Kyushu is not so far from Tokyo. After my arrival at YuFuin town, I wanted to try something different. So I hired a rickshaw for the first time ever. The driver as a nice guy thought he was not young or good-looking. He guided me around the town explaining he history. The rickshaw was very comfortable. You should try it sometime. There were many Asian people such as Chinese, Taiwanese and Koreans everywhere. It seemed that 90% were Asians. I cold hardly find any Japanese. After sight-seeing I checked into my Japanese Ryoukan. It has been in business for 90 years. It was an elegant building. There were three private hot-spring baths. I had a spacious open air bath all to myself. The spring quality is simple hot spring and it s good for the skin. Both the hot spring and the meals were quite good. By the way, Oita is the only prefecture which I had not visited. At lat. I have visited all 47 prefectures in Japan

Summer plans

I have to use my time wisely. It is the summer and that means that I have extra free time. That is because I do not teach at the kindergartens. One is Monday morning at 9:30. One is on Tuesday morning at 10. And another is on Friday morning at 10. There is some travel time in involved, too. I am free those times until September 1st. And I made my schedule to be completely free from August 11 (Mountain Day here in Japan) until August 18th. We will visit the family grave. We will eat Unagi. We will take a trip to Inatori for two nights, 3 days at the end of that time. I am looking forward to driving around Izu peninsula, swimming at Shimoda beach and eating aloe soft cream at the Aloe Center during this trip. I also have two violin lessons, one dentist appointment and a day trip planned in August. The day trip is this weekend. M and I will drive to Numata via the Kanetsu Highway then take the Romantic Kaido to Oku Nikko and then to Senjogahara, Lake Chuzenji and then back home via the Tohoku Highway. Besides that schedule, I have several projects. Two are books and one is a YouTube appearance. Watch for that. And, of course, I may drink.

Lucky and Timing!

I go to the gym at the Sun Arena in Okegawa. These days I workout for one hour. I get pretty sweater. Since (As) it is the summer, I don't shower at the gym. My house is very near. So, whether I go by bicycle or car, I go home and shower. Last week Tuesday I did that. But I left my water at the gym. I wanted to go straight from my house to school by bicycle, but I decided to go to back to the gym to get my water. But, it wasn't there! Good grief! I decided to go to BeniBanaWalk and get a Bento-lunch. BBW is near the Sun Arena and their lunch is different than my usual Mine Department Bento lunch. And when I arrived here, lo and behold, the Red Cross was doing a one-day Blood Donation Drive. Lucky me! It was time for me to donate blood. I went to the Omiya Blood Donation Center three Sundays ago, but it was so crowded. They said it would take more than two hours. So, I took this opportunity (chance) to donate. The Okegawa Lions Club was the sponsor. There was almost no waiting. I was finished in about 40 minutes. I then bought my Bento lunch and bicycled to my school. Lucky!

July 2017

It's August. How was your July? I couldn't wait for June to end. Why? Because there are no holidays in June. Of course, I was busy in July. First and foremost, we held the 2017 RAM Event at KenKatsu on Marine Day. That was July 17th. It took time to prepare and practice for the event. Then I had my usual lessons. However after Marine day three of my kindergarten lessons stopped for the summer. That gives me some extra time off. That also reduces my income (pay). So, I have to use my time wisely. I am working on several projects. They are all connected to our business and English, of course. In July I decided to quit drinking coffee. Why? Because I want to brighten my smile. I also use a special cleaner to clean my teeth. I also let my hair grow out. There is not  a lot of hair though. And with that, I went to the barber twice. I hadn't been to a barber in about 6 years. Finally M and I took a small vacation to EchigoYuazawa. We stayed two nights at a very inexpensive Resort Mansion. We took a one day trip to Kashiwazaki. I went swimming at YoneYama Beach. I am really looking forward to August and plenty of free time. So, how was your July?
