New texts

I teach English. That is, I teach English conversation and grammar and pronunciation and spelling and lots of "one-point-English" as well basic skills to my students. This is more so in our Okegawa school. How come? It's because I have a lot of kids studying here. They range from 6 to 20 years old. Seven years ago or so, I decided to start teaching how to pass the Eiken tests. Until that time I was still trying different methods (ways/means) to teach. So, when I started teaching Eiken, I discovered that there are basic grammar skills the kids need. I then made a program based on Eiken for teaching little kids. I made texts and CDs. They include a grammar intro, listening (very like Eiken but simpler) and a pronunciation practice. I also made an original text to use when teaching Eiken grammar. So, I must purchase (buy) the texts every year or so. The last time I bought them was in 2015. What year is it now? 2017! It was time. I stopped in at Maruzen bookstore in Okegawa Mine Department store and bought five sets. With that purchase I got a free ticket for coffee at the coffee shop next door. Lucky!

My violin

I started violin lessons six years ago. I enjoy the lessons and the practice and the occasional chance to play. I must say that I am not very good. I still can't read the music well. Timing is difficult. Bowing straight is not easy. I often grip the violin neck too hard. On top of that, I have problems hitting the notes properly. That involves placing the fingers of the left hand on the correct place (position) on the violin neck. Well, last week I asked my teacher to put some tape on the violin neck. She has suggested that a couple of times. But, as I am stubborn, I refused. I thought that I could conquer (defeat) this problem by myself. I believed I didn't need such a crutch (aid/help). I thought it was for little kids. However most little kids are much better than I am. So, my teacher put two thin pieces of clear tape on it and Voila! I can hit the notes quite correctly now. It is better for the sound of course. It is also better for the lesson as my teacher doesn't have to say "A little higher" or "A little lower" so much now. It does make practice easier so I can concentrate on timing and bowing and holding and all those other things.

Surprise visit

15 years ago? 20 years ago? I can't remember exactly, but I used to be a minister of weddings. I wasn't a real minister, so I had to pretend. It was a cool job and it was on Sundays so, I had the time. I also had a chance to practice my Japanese skills. I did it for two years. One benefit of the job was that I heard some very beautiful music from the staff. There were harp players, violinists, pianists, organ players and of course the chorus. I once did some gigs (jobs) at the Tobu Hotel in Ageo. One of the chorus singers was Yoko Mori. (See pic) Recently she visited my school out of the blue. I don't remember her at all actually. She needed some pronunciation help with one piece of music she wants to add to her repertoire. She checked the net and found my HP and she remembered me. So, she came to my school four times and we worked hard on "L"s and "R"s, "Dr"s, and "Tr"s. She will perform her piece in June at the Okegawa Citizens Hall. She is very serious and very studious. I am confident that she will perform admirably. I am also sure that she is also very good teacher. Good Luck, Yoko! http://www.moriyoko-music.com

Korea by Naho

I traveled to Korea recently.
On the first day I was with my mother, but the rest of the time I was alone. How come ? Because my mother had to go back work. Our purpose was to eat, so we went to a lot of  restaurants and cafes.
If you visit Korea, l highly recommend Taccarbie with cheese. Taccarbie is a dish in which chicken, vegetables and rice cake are fried with spicy miso. It is very spicy, so cheese is added on it to impart a milder flavor. There are many Korean restaurants where you have to order from two dishes, and the Taccarbe restaurant did so. I went there alone and ordered 2 dishes. I finished them completely!
Also I went "Gyeongbokgung palace".
They have free guided tours for each language there. It takes about an hour, and they told us some very interesting stories. The palace was beautiful and quiet. I think this palace is worth visiting.
Finally, I founded a lot of nice place in Korea other than duty free shopping!

Off the wagon

"Well, I don't drink as much as I used to." That is the opening lyrics for a song I've known for a long, long time. I searched it on the net. It was written by Alan Jackson. He has a very fine country and western singing voice. Anyway, I changed the lyrics a little. My version is "I don't drink as much as I ought to." That means that I should drink more. That is my personal opinion. Anyway (again) my hernia has 90% healed. I started my early morning stretching. I picked lots and lots of weeds next door. I cleaned the school from top to bottom the other day. I will return to the gym in one month. And I am not losing weight as I thought I would. Summer is fast approaching (coming soon) and I tried on my summer wardrobe. Things are a little tight. So, my new strategy is to D-I-E-T. Why? Because last Saturday after my final lesson for the week, Miwako and I had a plan to go out for dinner. She could drink as I would drive. BUT! I decided at the last minute that we should go by taxi and I would join her in a drink. And, that I did. We went to Futaba and had Japanese sake and food. It was delicious. Kan-Pe!

Alicia recital

Alicia has been coming to my school in Okegawa for more than 10 years. She is 20 now. Her mom brings her every Thursday night by car. The lesson starts at 8PM. Alicia was my assistant teacher at a kindergarten 3 yeas ago. She does IAI-DO, a Japanese martial art, as well as KEN-DO. She has been playing the piano since she was 3 or 4. She plays magnificently. She practices the guitar. She is very interested in music. She has two part time jobs. She recently told me she has a new interest. She performs at Live Houses. She sings and plays the piano. We finally had a chance to see her perform, so  Miwako and I went to the "+ 11" Live House in Ageo two Saturdays ago. We arrived at 7PM. There were two guys who played guitar and sang on stage. They were pretty good. Finally Alicia and her mom came around 7:30. We got to see her perform. She was pretty darn good. I mean, she's only 20! And you can see that she has a lot of confidence when she performs. Of course, her piano playing is perfect. Her singing was good, too. Perhaps I should start her fan club.

Magic Sky Tree by Kuma

This is Asakusa, Azumabashi area, one of the popular sightseeing spots in Tokyo. I like this area so much. One day when I was enjoying a pleasure boat in the Sumida River, I suddenly found the Tokyo Sky Tree appeared on the wall of the building. This building is Asahi Breweries headquarters and rooftop objects represent beer foams. The top floor is a beer hole and the scenery from the window is the best. Yellow objects was by Italian designer and represent energy and vitality. Why did such a distant Sky Tree appear on the wall of Asahi Beer?  Was it magic or something ominous?  Neither! It is based on the science of Optics.
Look at this illustration. First we need the light source. If there’s no light, things cannot be seen at all. In this case, the light source is Sun. The light coming from the sun repeat reflection and incidence many times. Through this process, the light is on focus and create the image on the wall. That’s the reason why the Sky Tree appeared on the wall. Actually to see the Sky Tree image more clearly, we need to match more good conditions. One is good weather and the other one is proper angle. Good weather means Sunny day and proper angle is decided by the height of the Sun. So let’s go to Asakusa Azumabashi on sunny day, 2 p.m.4 p.m. You can get the Sky Tree image on the wall clearly.

Easter

Easter is a Christian Holiday. It was celebrated last Sunday. From the Internet: Many churches hold special services on Easter Sunday. This day celebrates Jesus Christ's resurrection after his crucifixion. Many people also decorate eggs. These can be hard boiled eggs that can be eaten later, but may also be model eggs made of plastic, chocolate, candy or other materials. It is also common to organize Easter egg hunts. Eggs of some form are hidden, supposedly by a rabbit or hare. People, especially children, then search for them.
When I was a kid we had Easter egg hunts. We also decorated Easter eggs. I remember the my mom would boil water in a metal pot. It holds maybe 2 or 3 liters of water. Then she would put in coloring. We had two or three bowls with different colors in them. Then we would place a hard boiled egg in a metal, wire holder. Then we would dip the egg (put it in lightly) into the bowls and the color would stain the egg. After they dried my mom would hide them somewhere in the house. We then would try to find them. This was our Easter Egg Hunt. There were 3 kids. My mom is so cool!

Miwako's recital

Miwako is a busy person. She does housework. She does RAM English bookwork.  She takes care of her mother. She takes care of her family. She does the cleaning and cooking. She goes to the bank and the post office. She does everything ... and more. For example, she is a pianist. She started playing as a child. She practiced with a teacher from 5 years old to 11 years old and then from 16 to 22 years old. After we got married, she wanted to get a piano and have our kids learn. I said "No" because I thought the Japanese mansion which we lived in was too small. Then we moved to the countryside in Ageo 11 years ago. Miwako bought  a used piano in 2014 and started practicing. There are no houses next door to us. Sometimes when I come home on a Saturday or Sunday I can hear her practicing from outside. But, it bothers no one. I must say, she practice often and long, sometimes two hours! I could never do that. I'm too lazy.  She started taking jazz piano lessons 2 years ago. Last week she had a piano recital. She played "Fly me to the Moon" on stage. She was great, just like her practice. Keep on playing, Miwako!

Weeds, weeds, weeds

Let me be perfectly honest: I enjoy picking the weeds next door. Really? Yes, Why? Because it is a mindless exercise with a positive (good) result. exercise = an activity that is designed to achieve a particular result. I think watching TV is a mindless exercise. But, sometimes it is necessary to just chill out. Chill out means to relax; do nothing. The good part about picking weeds is that A. it is a physical activity and B. the area looks much nicer without those ugly green things. So, I pick the weeds next door even though they are not my weeds. I have several tools that I use. One is my little sickle. I have had it for about 20 years, I think. Another is my wheeled seat. It is red and black. So cool!  Unfortunately, I got a hernia March 1st. So, I couldn't pick until March 23rd (see pic). Then I picked four bags full. I picked again April 10th. I picked four more bags full. However the weeds have grown by leaps and bounds. I now have weed picking on my schedule. Of course, it is endless but it is always so nice to look at the lot when it is weed-less.

Hakone Part 3 The Foreigners

Another fun part of this Hakone trip was that we met a lot of foreigners. As I told you last week, we had beautiful weather for our excursion (trip) around the museum. There were many people here. But because the area is so spacious (big/large/vast) we didn't meet everyone. But we did meet a nice British couple from the UK. They were a little older than us and the wife spoke 98% of the time. The husband just waited. Good husband! Then I talked to two young guys but only one answered my questions. They were form Switzerland. And, the answers were only Yes and NO. I think he had many secrets. Next we met two families from the USA. They were in their 30s or 40s. They couldn't stop talking. Then we met 5 young people from the Mexico/Texas area. One of these guys took our picture for us in the foot bath. Then finally we met a mother ad daughter team from Russia. The daughter spoke very good English. And she said she loves President Putin! One interesting thought; none of those people that I met asked me any questions!

Hakone Part 2 Chou Koku No Mori

It was a very nice day, March 20th, 2017. It was the Japanese (Buddhist) holiday O-higan. There were not many people when we arrived at the museum. We borrowed a wheelchair at the front desk. It was my pleasure to assist Miwako all around the grounds. There are a lot of slopes though. Entering, I don't think anything has changed at this world famous outdoor museum. And, to tell you the truth, I only remember about half of the pieces of art all around the grounds. Most of them are very big. They are all unique. They are not very colorful. They are mostly black, white, gray or silver. Some are fun. Some are serious. Some are easy to understand. Some require (take) a lot of thinking. I wasn't interested in thinking too much though. But I did want to eat some soft cream. That was later inside the Picasso café. But we did find an outdoor café and enjoyed a café latte. We also cooled our heels (soaked our feet) in the streaming water. (See last Friday's BLOG). Finally we visited the Picasso museum. That place is GREAT! I highly recommend this wonderful place.

Hakone Part 1

Miwako and I went to Hakone for some R & R a couple of weeks ago. We spent two nights at a nice hotel. We booked the room through M's sister's husband's company plan as usual. Only this time it was a Fancy-Shmansy (a bit high class) hotel. No meals were included and it was a very nice place. It had an excellent bath, too. My hernia was on the mend (getting better/improving) and I really wanted to soak in the hot waters of a natural spa. And that we did. I was in the bath four times during the two days. I still used my crutches to get around the hotel. We did have to walk from our building to the spa which was next door. So, I used the sticks (crutches) whenever I travelled long distances. Our second day we got lucky. The weather was fine! I suggested to M that we visit Chou Koku No Mori. She agreed. This is one of my favorite places in Japan. We left the hotel around 10AM. It took less than10 minutes by car. For the story about Chou Koku No Mori, see next Tuesday's BLOG.

Trick ZOO by Kuma

I like the zoo so much. Because going to the zoo brings back a lot of memories.
When I was a child, I became interested in the habits of wildlife.
While I lived and worked in Singapore, I was interested in how the zoo challenged to show the animal in its natural form. Singapore zoo has no fences and no cages. That’s a great challenge.
The following is a part of my investigation.
Look at the illustration below. This is a sectional view of the zoo. There is a very deep and wide ditch, so animals can’t jump over and jump up from the bottom. There are a lot of plants and shorter trees to camouflage the trick or illusion.
There is a gentle slope. So we can’t see animal in the distance. But as we go up, the animal is getting bigger and bigger. Surprised! and terrified! no fence and no cage, but a lot of fun. And absolutely safe.
Singapore zoo has captured the hearts of tourists.

Toothache by Kazuko

I had a terrible toothache Tuesday. The truth is, I had a pain for one week. On that day, I couldn't stand the pain any longer, so I had the courage to go to the dental clinic for the first time in five years. I got two surprises. First, the treatment room became beautiful with latest facility by renovation. The other surprise was a handsome young dentist appeared before me. He was the son of the my regular dentist. He took an X-ray of my teeth and explained my condition politely. Then he gave me a shot of anesthesia in my gums and began treatment. It seemed that the anesthesia didn't work enough, I felt a slight pain. He asked me "Are you all right ?"
during treatment a couple of times. It was over without a lot of pain. He was so gentle. I like him.
Needless to say, I had a good sleep that night.

Spring ephemeral by Hiroko

I would like to talk about ゙Spring ephemerals゙.
According to Wikipedia, an ephemeral plant is one marked by short life cycles . The word ゙ephemeral゙ means transitory or quickly fading . ゙Spring ephemeral゙refers to perennial plants after a short growth and  reproduction phase.
Have you ever seen Spring ephemerals ?
Some Spring ephemerals are blooming in my garden now.
Please look at this picture. This is ゙Baimo゙. Another name is ゙Amigasayuri゙. It's  the lily  family.
My friend gave me some about ten years ago. I planted them in my garden.
After that, the Baimos are blooming early every spring. And they tell us ゙Spring has come ! ゙
I love them.
