Independence Day

We have two daughters. Our younger daughter has decided to move out of our house. She works in Tokyo. She wants to live closer to her company. Last Saturday we packed up the car with a lot of her stuff and some things she will need in her new place. My wife took them drove there in the afternoon. I taught English until 11AM and I went there by train right after teaching. Miwako and I arrived at just about the same time. We borrowed a dolly from the real estate agent and took everything to her room. It is a Japanese mansion. It is 30 years old. Her room is on the 11th floor. There is a cool view from her window of the wide, busy street below with all the cars and people. My sister-in-law lives about 5 minutes away by bicycle. She also came to help. This location is just one station on the subway from Ueno. It will cut her travel time by at least two hours a day to and from work. I am glad that she chose to try independence at such a young age. Good Luck!

Mida Kindergarten graduation

I started teaching at the Mida Kindergarten three years ago. I was very lucky to acquire (get) this job. They suddenly lost their regular English teacher. The manager asked one lady if she knew of any native speakers who teach English. This lady is the mother of one of my long time students here at my Okegawa school. She contacted me. I called the Kindergarten and they agreed to meet me. I went and we had a contract the next day. I started teaching the following week. I teach Friday mornings there. I also dress up for Halloween and pass out candy to the kids. I attend their Sports Day Festival. I have also seen their Marathon race. And, they ask me to attend their graduation ceremony. It is my pleasure. Here, I sit on stage with 15 other "dignitaries". They are local school principals, PTA executives, the sports teacher and me. They introduce us one by one at the ceremony. The ceremony is very serious. But I change that when I rise from my seat when introduced. I exclaim "Congratulations" and then I take their picture. It brings a smile to every ones face.

Bridge

I have a lot of stories to tell since last weekend. But, first I want to explain about bridge. We now have over 50 MPs. Congratulations to us! That means that starting April we will compete with the other people with over 50 MPs. Sometimes that is an Under 100 group or Under 150 group or Under 300 group. Most of the players are way above us in skill and experience. We played with them the last couple of weekends. We scored some minor points but those excellent players kept our results way down. As always we had some good and even exciting games. That was along with some very poor play and easy mistakes. So, we have made a decision. We really have to work harder at bridge. One basic of bridge is to remember what cards were played. So, we need to improve our memories. I have decided to do that when I play my bridge software. We can't expect good results immediately, but I am hoping to develop a good habit of remembering.

Saturday March 19th Part 3

Part 3 of this adventure was a dinner/drinking party. It was a kind of "Last Supper". We may never meet again. It was held in Okegawa at WAIZU. That is a O-konomiyaki/Monjya restaurant. My family goes to the one in Ageo. They have the kind of seats where you can sit with your feet hanging down under the table. The one in Okegawa has a flat floor. Other than that, it was a lot of fun. The only five gentlemen in attendance (attending the party) were me, the Sports teacher, one bus driver, the only male teacher and the K manager. I estimate (guess) that there were 40 ladies here. Five were teachers and the rest were moms. It started at 7PM and I left around 9:30. There was one small greeting by the manager to start the party and then he made another speech when he left around 8:30. I am sure everyone had a good time because those moms were free. The dads were taking care of the kids. I am also sure that they felt satisfaction at the success of the party and relief that everything was over and done with. They could now go back to their normal lives.

Saturday March 19th Part 2

After the graduation ceremony I dashed back to my school to teach. I arranged to have my 10AM kids come at 11AM. Three of them showed up (came) but I was 15 minutes late. No problem though. I changed my suit to teaching clothes. After the lesson I changed my teaching clothes to party clothes. I then got my violin and violin stand and bicycled back to the kindergarten for the ShaOn Kai. That is the party put on by the mothers of the kindergarten kids. They do this to show their appreciation to the teachers. That is, they want to say Thank You. It is quite a production. Of course we have a delicious lunch. There was also a 30 minute slide show. Then the teachers were all on stage doing a dance. They wore "Sazae-san" masks. That was really cool. We played a BINGO game. Then me and the only male teacher in the K played music together. He played the piano and I played the violin. Our piece was "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" The kids came on stage and sang with us. Excellent!

Saturday March 19th Part 1

It was Higashi Kindergarten all day for me last Saturday. I have been teaching at this Kindergarten for 12 years. This morning was the graduation ceremony. The graduation ceremony is very solemn. It is quiet and serious. First they hand over diplomas to all the kids one by one. Teachers cry. Parents cry. Some kids cry!  Then the Director makes a speech. He is the owner. He teaches penmanship (writing the Japanese characters) to the kids so he talks about that. Then the Manager (Director's son) makes a speech. He tells them to visit the Kindergarten anytime. Then the Sports Director makes a speech. He tells everyone how important it is to communicate. Then I make the my speech. First I say that this Kindergarten is a wonderful place. It has an at-home atmosphere. Then I told a humorous (funny) story about one adult lesson. Then I told about one young mother student who enjoys child rearing. Finally I make my famous "OK" speech. I talk to the kids in English and ask several times "OK?". They all answer together "OK!". Of course no one understand what I am saying. But it is an exhilarating performance. Everyone enjoys this speech. Finally, I take a photo from the stage.

ShunBun No Hi

Sunday was Shunbun no Hi, or Vernal (March) Equinox Day. On this day the sun crosses the equator making night and day equal in length. It's a national holiday in Japan, a day to commune with nature and to show affection for all living things. The seven-day period starting three days before Vernal Equinox Day and ending three days after is called higan. Higan, which also occurs around September Equinox Day, is - along with New Year's and the bon festival in the summer - a time when we pay our respects to ancestors. Visits are made to the family grave, cleaning it and offering flowers and incense to console ancestral spirits. Following Vernal Equinox Day, days gradually get longer and nights shorter. There's an old saying that the chill of winter finally disappears after Shunbun no Hi, and temperatures do get higher from around this time. Cherry blossoms - the most popular symbol of spring in Japan - begin to bloom, first in the south and then in the colder parts of the country in the north. How did you spend this holiday?

The Ides of March

March 15th, two days ago, is known as the Ides of March. Here is some info from the Internet.
The Ides of March (Latin: Idus Martiae, Late Latin: Idus Martii) is a day on the Roman calendar that corresponds to March 15th. It was marked by several religious observances and became notorious as the date of the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. The death of Caesar made the Ides of March a turning point in Roman history, as one of the events that marked the transition from the historical period known as the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire.
Although March (Martius) was the third month of the Julian calendar, in the oldest Roman calendar it was the first month of the year. The holidays observed by the Romans from the first through the Ides often reflect their origin as new year celebrations.
Please note: March used to be the first month of the year. I am researching now when and where January and February were added. Do you know?

Party

The Kenkatsu English courses finished last Saturday. It was 20 lessons. There are two lessons. The first is for beginners. The second is for advanced students or those who want to be expert.  They will start up again April 16th with more or less the same members. A lot of the same members have been attending for about 5 years, and perhaps more. They have become "tight". That means that they are close. Many performed on stage with us last July. At that time we had a RAM English Service anniversary event. The second group also enjoys partying. So, at the end of the course many of us will go out for dinner and drinks and usually to a Karaoke place. This time dinner was from 6:30 till 9PM at a restaurant on the east side of Omiya station. Nine of us were there. Then six of us went to sing. The dinner was good and I didn' drink so much. Then at the Karaoke place I didn't drink at all. We had bridge the next day. I came home safely by train and taxi about 11:30. Thank you all.

Traffic accident

It was 5:10 in the afternoon and raining last Wednesday when it happened. Six kids came to the 4PM class. They had just left along with a couple of moms. The five o'clock kids were here and doing this day's Homework. I had just left my captains chair and was heading towards the front of the classroom when I heard a huge (very big) BANG! I looked out the window. Just in time I saw a silver van crash on the curb across the street. It was still moving forwards though. It landed on its right side. That is the driver's side. It slid a couple of meters and then stopped. I remember seeing a bicycle. I immediately called the nearby KOBAN. They said call 110. I did. They asked me "Is it an incident? Is it an accident?" I told them accident. They then asked me where, is anyone hurt and then my name. Within minutes an ambulance, fire truck and police car arrived. The driver was removed from his car and laid on my doorstep! I got some towels for him to rest his head on. Many people were around watching. I had a good view but I went back to my teaching. Please be careful when driving.

Another veiw of the weeds

Friday, March 11, 2016

The lot next door

There is a vacant lot next to our house. I pulled up weeds all last year. My hope was to make it look nice. I believe I succeeded. The weeds were one meter high. Some of the weeds were higher. I worked twice a week on average. I bought some new tools. I used a lot of gloves. I hurt my back once. In the end the local farmer sprayed weed killer on the vacant lot for me. It was fine all winter. But now, those nasty little weeds have appeared. They have come out of the ground just a little. They are examining their new world. They are checking to see if it is safe to come out or not. There are still some of the big weeds with long roots in one area in the back. I will be working in this field again this year. I hope to uproot (pull out the roots) those big weeds soon and then spray some weed killer on the entire lot. I do not plan to ask the owner for permission. We are not sure where he is. And besides, the local farmer sprayed the weed killer without hesitation. I expect to be busy here again this year.

General Assembly

I live in Ageo. I live in Fujinami-ku Ageo. I live in Fujinami Danchi in Fujinami-ku in Ageo. Do you follow me? Last Sunday there was a Fujinami Danchi General Assembly at the Kouminkan. It is a basic assembly. I also participated in such an assembly when we lived in a mansion in Omiya. At this assembly:
1. They review the previous year's finances. That is, how much money came in, how much money went out and then what is the balance. We were in the black. That means that we had a surplus OR we had a plus/positive balance.
2. They forecast the coming year's finances. It looked pretty much like the previous year's numbers.
3. They tell us who the board members are. That includes the President, the secretary as well as the bookkeeper. They are all the same. During the assembly (meeting) we can ask questions and make comments/ suggestions. I asked about one area of heavy weeds. Can it be cleaned up? They will contact the owner.
4. Two local city officials made speeches.
5.At noon there was a lunch party including free drinks. I had enough the night before so I didn't take part. I went home to relax.

A night out

Last Sunday I had to attend a neighborhood General Assembly. That means that I could not play bridge in Tokyo. That means I was free to drink Saturday night. So, last Saturday I went out with two friends. One is an ex-student (a former/previous student) and the other is a current student. The ex-student and I have been out drinking on more than one occasion. That means, many times. The other gentleman has relatives in my neck of the woods (my neighborhood). We first met at the Fujinami AKI MATSURI two years ago. He has an in-law from America. I met Douglas at the fesival and we spoke. He then introduced me to Toshi. Anyway, the timing was right for a drinking party for me. Two weeks earlier I contacted both and arranged things. We all met at Kushihide in Okegawa. It s near my school. This was their first time to meet and we all enjoyed each other's company. The food was good, mostly barbecued meats and veggies on a skewer. I only drank beer until the end then we drank whiskey. I don't remember coming home.

The dentist

I made a trip to the dentist last Friday. I had no Kindergarten lesson that morning so I was free. I took the 8:30 train to MinamiUrawa and arrived at the office just after 9AM. But, that is no problem. My hygienist checked out my teeth and gave me a nice compliment on how clean they were. Last time my dentist explained that I should floss after every meal. And I did exactly as he said. So, no worries there. However, I had one small happening. Part of one of my lower incisors (cutting teeth) broke off. It is the tooth in the middle. The break is on the inside so you cannot see it. It happened about one month ago while I was eating supper. It felt strange on my tongue. I thought there was some food on the tooth. But, when I brushed my teeth, it didn't change. That is, it still felt strange. I realized that one piece broke off. My dentist said that it is no problem. He then did a little extra work on my teeth. I was there for over an hour. My teeth are fine and I will brush and floss and clean my teeth extra hard until my next visit.

Blood Donation

Last week Wednesday I got a telephone call. My wife took it as I wasn't home. She told me about it that night. I was surprised to hear that the Japanese Red Cross called. They said that there was a shortage (not enough) of type O blood. They needed more. That is my blood type. This call was very unexpected. To tell the truth I planned to go at the end of January. You can donate 3 times a year. I was scheduled to go but I got busy and forgot. I am glad that they called. The very next day I went to Omiya in the afternoon. First I went to have lunch at Ducky Duck in Sogo. I used to go there a lot but haven't been recently as my schedule changed. Then I looked at slippers but couldn't find any. Then I went to the Donation Center. All went smoothly. The people were friendly and courteous as always. I also got my fill of soft drinks and juice as well as o-senbe and cookies and crackers. They also gave me a special gift as a reward for coming. I took a photo of a cool picture they had hanging there. Please check it out Sunday.

Doll Festival.

Every year on March 3rd, Japan celebrates the Doll Festival (Japanese, Hina Matsuri). Until recently, Girls' Day was also celebrated on March 3rd. On this day every year, families set up a special step-altar on which to arrange their Emperor and Empress dolls, called "hina" in Japanese. They decorate this altar with boughs of peach blossoms and make offerings to the hina dolls of freshly made rice cakes (mochi), either flavored with a wild herb or colored and cut into festive diamond shapes. That is the info from the Internet. In our house we do the same. We have two daughters so, we celebrate this day. My wife puts out the Hina Doll display every year. And then she takes it down a few days later. She told me this is to ensure (make sure) that our daughters will be happily married in the near future. I am hoping for the same thing. How about you? Do you display the dolls on this day?

Super Scrabble event

On Monday Blogs I post the answers to the puzzler along with a photo of a finished (completed) Super Scrabble board. Have you ever played Scrabble. Personally,  I love it! I play it at the end of every month with some of my students here at my school. They are junior high or high school students. It is a good game to build your vocabulary. Of course the students use their dictionaries. I also give them lots of hints and advice on making words. Anyway, I held a Super Scrabble event at my school last Saturday night. I advertised the event at all my adult classes. There was a charge of 1,000en. The event was from 6PM to 9PM. There was a ten person limit. I got ten people. They came by bus and car and train and bicycle. Two people came late. The game is for four people so I had to fill in at two tables. That is, I was the fourth player. But those two members came later so I had to fill in four chairs for an hour or so. I enjoyed it! Some of the players were good. I am pretty sure all had a good time.

Bridge

I just couldn't wait to tell you about our bridge play last Sunday. We were up fresh and ready Sunday morning. We drove to Takadanobaba to play bridge. There were only ten teams. There were some very good teams. And of course, there were some poor players, too. During the day I made two very bad plays. In that case, we not only lost points. We also give points to our opponents. My partner made a couple of mistakes too. Her mistakes were minor. But on the whole (in general) we played well. This was an Under50/Under100 competition. Two of our big rivals were there. We were 4/10 and 3/6 in the morning. We earned a few MPs. Then in the afternoon we came in 4/9 and 3/5. So, we earned a few more points. I hope we are over 50 MPs now. The bad news is that this coming Sunday, March 6th, I can't go to play bridge. There is the annual Town meeting. The families from our neighborhood will send a representative to attend. I am our house representative so I will attend. The good news is that this coming Sunday, March 6th, is my birthday!
