Another Sports Day Festival

I have been teaching at the Higashi Kindergarten in Okegawa for ten years or so. Of course, they have a Sport Day festival every year. I almost never miss this event. They used to have it outdoors at a ground near the Kindergarten. Several years ago I even ran in one of the races! I was much younger than. It was fun. It was very windy that day. The dust blew everywhere and paper cups and plates and such were flying around. Four years ago the Higashi K rented the SUN Arena in Okegawa to hold their Sports Day event there. I must say, it is great! First, they never have to worry about the weather. Even if it rains, they will hold the event. It is never too hot nor too cold. The moms and dads and grandparents and guests can sit up on the second floor. It goes all around the gym so it is always a good view. This year I couldn't attend the opening ceremonies as I teach at 9AM Saturday morning. But I was able to go at 11AM after my two lessons at my school. I got to sit (was allowed to sit) in the VIP seat with the owner and one public official in a suit. As always it was a lot of fun. I'm glad that I could make it (attend/come).

Jogging

I started jogging again last month. I quit at the end of last year because of one of my maladies (health problems).  I had some stomachaches that I never had before. It concerned (worried) me a little bit. I went to the same clinic where I go for my annual health check ups in December. He found nothing wrong. So, I went to a specialist in Ageo near Ageo Central hospital. This doctor told me get an endoscopy. That is where they use a camera to check out your insides. So, I did. It wasn't fun but it wasn't so bad either. The results were negative (no problems) so I just waited until I recovered naturally. The pains stopped about June and I didn't eat breakfast at home for  a long time. I took b-fast to my school and ate it later when I felt hungry. Now, I eat regularly and so I started jogging. I also found a new jogging course which is quieter than my old one. It is 2.7 kilometers compared to the 3k of the old one. Monday I took my camera to take a picture of the cows I see jogging to use on this BLOG. But I took this pic instead. That's my shadow. Is it cool, or what?

Good advice

I visited my student/friend Mr. T last Thursday. It was after our lesson at the Kenkatsu Center. I had the car this day so it was convenient for me. I wanted to see his rose garden. He has a rose garden in front of his house. It is almost like a park. Of course the space is limited but he makes the most of it. That means he utilizes (uses) the space very wisely and professionally. I have been here several times. We had coffee and then tea with some delicious cakes baked by his lovely wife. Their granddaughter was also there to keep us entertained. As I said, I wanted to see his garden. I wanted to see how he manages the weeds. He showed me. He uses a hoe to cut the weeds at the ground. That is he doesn't pull the weeds up by the roots. He told me that there will always be weeds. Even if you pull the existing (current) ones, new ones will arrive with the blowing winds. Those winds bring seeds. I tried it on the vacant lot next door. It worked. But, his ground was so very hard that he can pick up the cut weeds. My ground is very soft so the cut weeds get lost in the dirt piles. But it looks much nicer. Don't you agree?

Bridge

I just have to (must!) tell you about our bridge resulsts Sunday. It was a beautiful, sunny day and a pleasant drive to Yotsuya. We arived early to meet a lot of friends. But these friends soon became opponents as we sat down to play. Of course, everyone is friendly whether you win or lose. But we all want to win. And win, we did. M and I played well. Afterwards (After the competition) I looked back and thought that we played confidently. We made very few mistakes. There were two ranks of players: Under 50 and Under 100 in this competition. M and I currently have 34MPs. In the AM session I felt we did well and my suspicions were confirmed. We came in 2nd of 11 and 2nd of 16. The first place team is a mother and son couple. In the PM we continued our good play. There were some intersting games as usual. There were also some boo-boos (mistakes) by our opponenets. That helped us. But someitmes we do that, too, but not this day. After the smoke cleared (After the competition ended) we were the champions for the PM session as well as for the whole day. The mom and son couple were second. Nice!

My aching shoulder

Since the beginning of this year there has been a pain in  my right shoulder. I am not sure why. Maybe it began I started pulling weeds! It is not a muscle pain. It is somewhere inside, perhaps a bone or tendon or some such thing. Anyway, it only hurt when I raised my arm very high. I do that when I teach the kids. I use a pointer to point to the Alphabet or Numbers on the wall at the kindergartens. I felt that it was due to my age as I am 63 now. Of course, I never thought to go to the doctor. I thought I can live with it. Then last Friday I went to get my monthly massage. The man rubs my muscles and stretches my body into strange positions. It is painful sometimes, but feels very good when it is finished. Last Friday he did something for the first time. He took my right arm and pulled it high over my head as I lied on the bed. It was painful but I endured. And when he returned it to the normal position the pain was gone. It was a miracle! I then went to my school and tried to raise it. It hurt a little but not like before. One week has passed and little by little the pain has disappeared. I am so happy. (The pic is a cow with a swollen knee...a bit like me)

Vacant lot

I was out in the lot next door pulling weeds at 5:30 this morning. This is one of my current projects. And, as with any project, it is little by little OR step by step. The lot (field) is quite level now. There are no tall weeds. Only the bamboo island sticks out OR is noticeable. (It is front/right in the picture.) That is my choice. You could also say that it is by design. Anyway, there are still lots of weeds to pull. So, we called the City Hall and asked them to contact the owner. My hope is to be able to spray weed killer in the field. That will prevent (keep) new weeds from growing. Then the field will always look nice. So, we need the owner's permission to do that. I hope he says "Yes". In the meantime I found that there are two kinds of weeds. One is the usual (regular/typical) kind that grow everywhere, even in the cracks in the street. The other kind has the large weeds that grow very near the surface of the ground. In the picture you can see them in the back. They are the green ones. Actually they are interesting to pick and pull as they are all connected. I don't know if I will pick those green ones or not. Maybe in the future.

Enomoto Dairy Farm Part 2

We ordered our milk cream. They had eight flavors: milk, chocolate, rum raisin, blueberry, hazelnut, and three others that I forgot. They were creamy, soft and delicious. We had to wait about ten minutes to order but no problem. The eating space is small but the people come and go at a good pace, so no waiting here. Some people eat their ice cream outside. After eating we walked around the buildings. Everything was quite compact. There were, of course, a lot of cow and calves. You could see them up close. Beautiful! There were automatic milking machines and automatic feeding machines for them. There were also a lot of pigs and piglets. They had them on sale. (We didn't buy any) I saw two rabbits. Then I took a walk out to the filed. There were about a hundred huge, HUGE! plastic bags filled with food (hay?) for the cows to eat. Some were black but the majority (most) were white. There were some farm machines and I met two burros. We drove our car in the field to see things close up. Of course we got a point card. We plan to go back soon. Actually it is only about ten minutes from our house if we use the back roads. Lucky!

Enomoto Dairy Farm Part 1

My wife, mom-in-law and I made a visit to the family grave on Sunday. We go once a month. We hardly ever miss this family event. It was a beautiful day. The weather was warm, the skies were blue and there was almost no wind. It was very summer-like. It was 2:30PM and we decided to take a drive, but, to where? I wanted some soft ice cream so we discussed Chichibu or a highway stop area. All seemed too far. Then I mentioned the Enomoto Dairy Farm but no one knew where it was. We drove to Maruyama Park in Ageo because we knew it to be near there (Shakespeare English). As we drove searching, we stopped the car by the roadside and asked people for directions. Without too much trouble we finally found it. What a cool place! I was surprised at how small it was. But there were close to one hundred people there. There were lots of kids. Many people came by bicycle. The Ara River is behind the place and it has a cycling road which follows the river. Many of the cyclists wore beautiful riding clothes and gear. They looked cool! We got our soft cream (milk cream) and toured around the place. I will tell you more tomorrow.

Bridge

We played in a tournament this past Sunday. It was our level for a change (That means that, we were not playing in our level for a long time. We were playing with some higher level players.) That was good practice but we were happy to get back to our level. We met old friends and made some new ones. We met a couple of players that we rarely see. The AM session went well for us. We played solid, basic bridge and come in 2nd of 11 teams. That is good for some MPs. After lunch we didn't do so well. As usual we had good games and several bad games to land us (put us) in 9th of 14 teams. However, I had two exciting games. On the first one, I made a very courageous (brave) bid. Then I fooled (tricked) the opponent. I made her believe that I had a strong card when I actually had nothing. She believed me and I succeeded. Later, I made a very unusual bid and the other players thought I was crazy. But, it was also a success. So, I was satisfied with my play. There was also one surprise. One lady had a new partner. She always comes with her husband. And this time she and her new partner were Numero Uno (Number One). I hope Miwako didn't notice!

A rare day off

I teach Monday through Saturday. I teach 8 hours or 7 hours or 6 hours or 5 hours a day. I am almost always at my school blogging, making puzzles, updating texts or homework, sending  e-mails, communicating with teachers or consulting with business associates or talking to my wife planning a vacation or bridge strategy. I also practice music much more these days. And then on Sundays (and some holidays) we make the trip to Tokyo by car to participate in a bridge competition or two. Last Sunday we went to play bridge and had some good results (See tomorrow's BLOG) and I decided that I just had to drink. After much discussion in the car on the way back home, we decided on Azumakura in Ageo. We drove there and had delicious drinks and food. We came home by a taxi service and the next day I did almost nothing but watch TV. I watched a baseball game, live, from America. Then I watched a recording of an American football game. I did relax outside for an hour looking at the vacant lot next door. I went to the school for 30 minutes to practice violin while M was practicing the piano at home. Then back home to watch movies. Almost everything was mindless. Heaven! (The PIC is from last Saturday's MIDA K Sports Day Festival.)

Mida K Sports Day Festival

The Mida Kindergarten is located in KitaKounosu. I was hired there three years ago. I teach on Friday mornings. I always try to attend the graduation ceremony, the Sports Day event and dress up for Halloween to pass out candy to the kids. Last Saturday I was free in the afternoon. I finished teaching at 11:0 and then drove to the Mida elementary school to enjoy the festivities. There are  many students at this kindergarten and they always put on a big, gala Sports Day festival. They have a tug-of-war event. This is for ex-students. They are kids who have graduated from the Kindergarten and are now in elementary school. That is a big event. They also have sports events for the current students. That is in the morning so I couldn't see it. They have an event for the parents and the littlest kids. But, the main attraction is the band. They have a lot of musical instruments and the kids march and they also parade. Then the climax is the acrobatics. Kids form circles and squares on the ground and the make pyramids and then march up and down the field. I enjoyed it all. I will post more pics this weekend.

Sports Day In Japan

It was a national holiday here in Japan yesterday. It was "Sports Day". I have lived in Japan for over 30 years. I have been to many Sports Day events with my kids and sometimes friends. So, I checked the Internet to see if other countries have Sports Day festivities. First, I remember that in my home town we had a summer event like a Sports Day. It was sponsored by the church. I went to a Catholic elementary school for eight years. The public schools are six years the same as Japan. Our school had a baseball league. At the Summer Festival there were All Star baseball games. And the festival was huge (very big). There were over a\one thousand people there. It was at a huge park. On the Internet I found that England has "Houses" in their schools. The kids are members of the different houses. They have sports competitions as well as educational competitions. Have you ever seen a Harry Potter movie? These kinds of Houses are depicted (shown) in the movies. If you know any foreigners, please ask them if they have Sports Day events in their countries. Thanks. The picture is one 4 year old at the Mida Kindergarten Sports Day event I attended last Saturday.

Crashed fence update

About six weeks ago, someone drove their car into our fence. It happened in the morning. There was a very heavy rain at that time. It was a downpour. My mother-in-law heard the crash. She looked out the window and saw a white car. Then the car drove away. We contacted the insurance company and our home builder and they handled (took care of) everything. They would rebuild the fence with the  insurance money. Then four days later the driver of the car and his daughter came to our house. They apologized and gave us some delicious grapes and a peace offering. The father has Alzheimer's disease and should not have been driving. It was an accident and no one was hurt. That was good. The Home builder finally set a bill for the fence. We contacted the daughter and she will pay for the repairs. However there was an interesting sidelight to the story. One of my students gave a report at our conversation lesson one Tuesday night. He told the same story about the fence crashing and then told us all that the driver was his wife's cousins father! It's a small world after all.

MINE Department

Lots of people at the reopening
There is a department store in front of Okegawa station's west side called MINE department store. I heard that there used to be a factory on this site. The soba owner told me that he used to have a lot of customers at lunch time when the factory was operating. But, that changed when the department store opened. MINE opened some 25 yeas ago. When we opened our school in 2000 I heard a horror story about a stabbing incident in front of MINE. But, there has never been able trouble. Anyway, last year they painted the outside and then MINE had a makeover inside this year. They closed on August 15th and then reopened October 1st. I went there that day. I must say it looks much better. A lot of the makeover has been cosmetic. That means that it is on the surface. Most of the stores remain and they look nicer. There were two major (big) changes: One is that the supermarket registers now face west instead of south. The other one is that the third floor is all MARUZEN book store. There is a coffee shop there, too. It all looks very nice. You should check it out.

Health Check Up

I go every year to get a physical check up. It is very basic. This year I went to Ishibashi Clinic in Ageo. They open at 9:00 but I arrived at 8:15 to get a number. I drank green tea and studied bridge while waiting. They called my number and I gave them my Ageo City papers, my clinic card and my insurance card. I filled out a questionnaire. Then I check my blood pressure. Then they check my temperature. Then they measure my weight and my height. I then give them a urine sample. Then they give me an EKG. Then they take a blood sample. (I also requested a check for prostate cancer as there is a history of that in my family). Then I finally met the physician (doctor). He is a cool old gent. He asks me some questions about my basic health: How do I feel? Has anything changed in the last year? He asked me these questions while looking at last year's results. Everything was good. I have already finished my stool samples. I will take that to them tomorrow and then wait. I will get the results in a month.

Rice field

I seldom talk about the rice field in front of our house. That is because I have been so preoccupied (busy) with weeding and cleaning the vacant lot next door to our house. But, I just L-O-V-E that rice field. The owner (in the photo) is a cool old gent. We always exchange greetings (say "Hello" to each other) and even talk sometimes. But, I don't understand his Japanese very well. He always plants his field later than the other farmers. So, he harvests later than the other farmers. I do believe he is the last. I pass the field and admire it every AM as I ride my bicycle on my way to work. I was lucky to catch him working this day. He was cutting the rice by hand. When I asked him why, he said that he has to cut the corners because the machine cannot. That makes sense. Last year he only planted half the field because he was going to build a house on the other half for his grandson. But, the law said that he cannot build a house there as it is farm land. I'm glad he didn't. I really appreciate the nature.

The vacant lot

It took four and a half months but I finally pulled all the tall weeds from the vacant lot next door. There are hardly any tall weeds left (remaining). I never intended (planned) to pull all the weeds. I only wanted to maintain (keep) the area nearest my house clean. I mean I wanted to keep it free from weeds. Our tree trimmer said the tall weeds block the air and wind from passing through our trees. He said that is not good. Those tall weeds also produce some pollen. That brings allergies to some of our family members. Basically it is an bad (unwelcomed) situation. I went out yesterday AM at 4:30. Yes, it was still dark. But the bright moon gave me just enough light to work. It was cool. I wore my usual long sleeve shirt and long pants. I wasn't sure if I would finish this day. It looked like too much. But I just kept my head down and pulled and pulled and pulled. I made four bundles with string of the very long weeds. It is easy to carry them to the garbage place that way. I also used one garbage bag for some small weeds I picked. It was full. Don't you think it looks nice though? Me, too. Please check tomorrow's BLOG to see one of the first pictures I took back in May.

My September

It's October. I had a busy September. It went something like this:
1. Weeding. I finally pulled all the tall weeds from the vacant lot next door. I started attacking May17th. I always worked in the early morning hours.
2. Music. I decided I needed a new approach to my violin practice. This is my 4th year and I realized that I must understand music in order to really appreciate the violin. So, I bought a keyboard.
3. Business 1. I am making Homework for kids for sale. I have used the HW at my school for three years and all is well. I sold some to the Kindergarten moms where I work and all seem satisfied.
4. Business 2. I got a new job. It is teaching at a Houikuen (Day Care for Kids) in Kawagoe. The owner is a friend from RINRI. I had to stop my Wednesday morning lessons at my school to do it. It was a difficult decision.
5. Bridge. M and played five times. Four were with Under 100 teams so we did not score very high. One time was with Under 50 players and we earned some MPs.
6. Vacation. M and I stayed two nights at the Sunnide hotel with a great view of Lake Kawaguchi and Mt. Fuji.
