Bridge

NiRe-DeBiRu. Do you know what that means? On Sunday M and I travelled to Shibuya to play bridge. There were 24 teams! It was an Under 100/50 competition. We knew that it would be difficult. As usual, we did our best. But we scored poorly. In the AM we were 27/28 and 13/14 with a success rate of only 42.48%. We have done worse. In the PM we rebounded to score 15/28 and 7/14 with a success rate of 51.05%. I thought we would do better as I didn't drink for a week. I made three mental errors (mistakes) in the AM. M made one big boo-boo (mistake), too. But we had some satisfying moments. M made a very difficult "Slam" try. That is like a Grand Slam Home Run in baseball. It is difficult to bid but she did it flawlessly (without mistake) and then played it perfectly. I made a couple of very good hands, too. Anyway, there were two guys playing from Okinawa. They were invited to come and play in Saitama. The JCBL offers such chances regularly. I asked them "How do you say Thank You"? in Okinawa. They replied NiRe-DeBiRu. Gottit? If you check out the Score Sheet you will see the Hirata-couple just above us.

Piggy Bank

I have two Piggy banks. Do you know what a piggy bank is? It is a container that holds money. You put the money in when and if you want. You can put in a little money or you can put in a lot of money. You can do it anytime. However I prefer (want to) put one coin in every day. I then mark it on my calendar so I don't forget. You don't have to go a real bank. I deposit (save) a 100en coin every day. I started September 10th, 2013. That was when I first  heard about the 2020 Olympics to be held in Tokyo. I am saving to buy an opening (or closing) ceremony ticket. My younger daughter bought me this Piggy bank two years ago on my birthday as my Chinese zodiac sign is the Dragon. I used this one for one year. I also have a Japanese Mail Box bank. I used that one the past year until September 9th. Then I switched back to my Dragon bank. I have to take the coins to the bank every six months as 365 100en coins will not fit into this bank. I have two years' worth of savings. That is a total of 73,000en. I'm rich!

Kamakura Oji-san

One of my wife's uncles lives in Kamakura with his wife and their daughter's family. This uncle and his son go to Toyama prefecture 3 times a year. They pick up rice for the families here. They also take my mother-in-law (his older sister) with them. This uncle has been living in Kamakura for the past 8 or 9 years. We went there 5 years ago and then 3 years ago. He hoped that we would come again. So, we had the chance (opportunity) this Silver Week and made plans to go. It just so happens (just by chance) his birthday is September 23rd. So, his son arranged for the get-together to include a birthday parry for him. My sister-in-law also came from Tokyo. Everyone had a good time. I took the opportunity to go to the beach. One 9 year old boy is in the family. He and I took a walk down to the ocean. We rolled up pour pant legs and walked in the surf. It felt good! We also walked and ran along the beach barefoot. More fun! We got back to the house and soon went to the restaurant. I had pasta and fish and two glasses of wine. All enjoyed this party. We said our good-byes and my wife drove us home. Her mother kept her company in the front seat. I slept in the back. Nice photo, eh?

Bridge, bridge and more bridge

My holiday is over. It ended with a trip to Kamakura yesterday to visit family there. That will be in Tomorrow's BLOG. We didn't play bridge last Sunday because we were vacationing in Yamanashi. So, we had a chance to attend two different competitions on Tuesday and Wednesday. We were pretty bad on Tuesday for two reasons. One reason is because we were worn out (tired) from our trip. The other reason is that the other 23 teams were much better than us. It was an Under 50/100 meet. (By the way, we reached the 30MPs, so we are progressing nicely.) On Wednesday we played in an Under 20/50 meet so it was more our level. We played well most of the time but sometimes poorly. We had many ups and a few downs. We made more good plays than we made mistakes. We forgot a few things but we remembered more. We also enjoyed the company of the other players. All the opponents are Japanese. One guy we met is an English teacher at a university. His partner speaks English and Chinese. He is a "head hunter" for Chinese workers. We had a nice conversation after all was done.

O-higan

There are many religions around the world. I think most people need to believe in a God or in an after life. It is a strange thing. You have to believe it in your heart. But, only you can know how much you believe it. I was born and raised in a Christian (Catholic) family. The beliefs are simple: There is a God. If you do bad things God will be unhappy  you will suffer after you die. If you do good things you will be rewarded after you die. But is there anything "after you die"? If you believe so, you will try to do only good things while you are living on this earth. It is very simple. Here in Japan, you don't have to "do good things to be rewarded after you die". You do good things because it is best for the society. Everyone can live in harmony. This is what I believe about Japanese culture. Today is a Japanese holiday. It is a Buddhist holy day. Families can get together. You can take a rest from work and the stress of daily life. I am sure everyone believes in something. I'm not sure what you believe in, but I will enjoy the day off today.

Sunnide Resort

We took a well deserved (because we work so hard!) vacation in Yamanashi Prefecture. The weather was very good. It took less than two hours to get to (reach) our hotel from our home last Friday. We used the KenOuDo which starts very near our house and then the ChuOu highway. We checked into the Sunnide Resort at 3PM. From our hotel room we could see Mt. Fuji in the background of Lake Kawaguchi. Nice! There is plenty of (lots of) scenery with trees and mountains and the lakes and, of course, Mt Fuji around here. The good weather let us enjoy all this. It was most interesting to watch the clouds. We hoped to see the beauty of the big volcano all day but the clouds kept playing "hide and seek" with it. In the very early AM the sky was all white with clouds. The first day the clouds rose up the mountain and the sky was clear. Fuji was gone one hour later. The second day I took a walk at 6AM and the clouds completely disappeared to show the full majesty of this World Heritage. We checked out and after a drive around the lakes we returned home Sunday at 3PM safe and sound.

Bridge

Yes, we played bridge last Sunday. Two interesting things happened. First was a funny one. There is one guy called Kin-chan by the ladies. But, I called him Kin-chan and he said "NO, it's Kin-san". Sorry. He is a good player and he really thinks hard when he plays and when he does he screws up his face. That means that his face becomes strange looking. I enjoyed that. Another one was with a couple. They are good rivals because we are also a couple. Bridge couples are rare. When we played this time, the wife made a very good play. First she counted the cards as all good payers should. Then she realized  (knew) that the KING was the only card out. So, she played her ACE and was able to capture my KING. She was very happy with her thinking and play. I watched her face as I played (put down) my KING. Her face slowly grew into a smile as she knew that her strategy worked. It was so heart-warming.I was happy for her. I was also happy for us because we earned (got) some MPs for our efforts. We did very well in the AM but stumbled (made more mistakes=errors) in the PM. We finished 3/10 for the day.

Weeding

I started clearing the vacant lot of weeds next  to my house on May 17th. That was four months ago. I wanted to clean it because it is right next door to our house and garden. The weeds were very high. Those weeds could spread to our garden.  And some people are allergic to such weeds. We tried to get the owner to do it. We called the Ageo City Hall many times every spring and summer. One young man came two years ago and tried to cut the weeds. But his cutting machine broke! The weeds were too strong. So, I decided to clean the field by myself. At first, I borrowed the weed cutter from our community center. Then I pulled weeds. I cut weeds. I dug out weeds. I raked weeds. I never used any chemicals. And little by little the lot began to take shape. We got lucky when some digging was done by Ageo City to look for old relics buried nearby. They used the vacant lot as an HQ. So, they cleared some weeds. I went out Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday and trimmed the higher weeds. I also threw away many weeds. Check out the photo for the results. I'm luvin' it! (P.S. The "Crash" story will continue next week.)

Crash!

tTwo Saturdays ago I got a call from my wife while I was teaching. She said that somebody had driven into our fence with their car and then drove away. It was during one of those heavy downpours of rain we had. Her mother (my mother-in-law) heard it. It was a terrible noise. She looked out the window and saw the car. It was white. But that was all she could see. My wife called the police and made a report. When I came home that night I saw that we were very lucky. Our car was parked in the driveway right next to the fence. But, only the fence was damaged. We wondered what we could do. Later, my wife told me that we had insurance. It covers natural disasters such as earthquakes, fires and floods. It also covers accidents such as this one. Lucky us! We called them and they said to send pictures and a copy of the police report and they will pay. We were very relieved. We thought we might have to pay. And everything was fine until the culprit (the person who did the bad deed) showed up (appeared) at our door three days later. To be continued.

Saturday Night Fever

The Kenkatsu Saturday lessons finished September 5th. There are two. Both are adult, 90 minute classes. They are 20 weeks long. The first one is for beginners. The second one is for more advanced students and it is my policy to use only English with these members. No one has ever complained so I guess they prefer (want/like) it that way. The first group had a celebration get together to end the season. They held it on Friday, September 4th. I couldn't attend this party because of my work schedule. However, the second group has been together longer and always plans the final lesson party on the last Saturday of the course. In that case I can attend. This year we went to a new place at 6:30 in Omiya. The food was good and the drinks flowed freely. 12 members attended. Afterwards 8 of us went to a Karaoke place nearby. I brought only the bare necessities: my Suica card, my Residence card and some cash in my pocket. That is so I didn't lose anything. Which is good because this time I drank too and don't remember coming home. Thank you all very much!

Aren't they beautiful!

Check up Results

I am always thinking about my health. I suppose every one is concerned (thinks about) their health. So, I try to do things that are beneficial (helpful) for my health. I exercise and diet. Diet, means to be careful what you eat. Or, don't eat too much of this or too much of that. It also means eat healthy foods. For exercise, I used to jog but I quit this year. (I had a stomach problem from last November so I stopped jogging.) These days I pull weeds and ride my bicycle to and from my school and to Kenkatsu Center sometimes and walk a lot for exercise. Recently it has been difficult to lose weight. When I quit in 2012, I lost 12 kilos that year. I was down to 64kg. Now I am always around 70kgs. The best solution for me is to stop drinking alcohol. But, that is out of the question (impossible). I need to drink sometimes for stress relief. (My excuse!) Thanks to my parents I have a healthy body. I hope it lasts. Please check out the latest results from my Blood Donation. Not bad, but I must be careful.

Bridge

We played in an Under 50 competition in Yotsuya on Sunday. I was surprised because there were only 8 teams in the AM. We finished 7 out of 8.We played poorly and bid badly. We got almost nothing right. I am pretty sure my problem was a hangover. I went out with the Kenkatsu advanced group for a Term Ending Party last Saturday night. I promised myself not to drink much because we had bridge the next day. Broken Promise! I don't even remember coming home. But, After a light lunch M and I got down to business (got serious). There were 11 teams in the afternoon. You have to play and bid well in order to win. And we did both rather smoothly, I must say. We communicated well. We remembered most of our plans (strategies) and, as usual, got lucky at several games. At one point the room got cold as we were sitting directly under an A/C. One director gave me a poncho to wear. With my hat I looked like Sherlock Holmes, I was told. Anyway, if you look at the photo you will see that we were quite successful. We try again next Sunday. Will I drink Saturday night?

Summer free time

I had a lot of extra time off from 7/18 to 9/1. That was because the kindergarten lessons I have were off for the summer. I was very busy with the RAM Special Event at Kenkatsu Center up until 7/20. I helped with the students' English and practiced on stage a lot with them as well as my own Violin practice. So, I took advantage of the free time to do some things.
1. Went to Shinokubo to get new horse hairs put on my violin bow.
2. Spent one night at the Hotel Okura.
3. Visited the grave in Ageo.
4. Had breakfast at the Higashi Kindergarten.
5. Donated blood.
6. Took our car in for a check up.
7. Went to the dentist.
Of course, I weeded a lot and practiced the violin a lot and played bridge a lot and taught a lot and worked on my "Homework for kids for sale" project a lot. I did not drink a lot. Whew!

The picture is at the Higashi K breakfast where I teach on Tuesdays. Can you pick out the father and son? Answer Below

Labor Day USA

INFO: Labor Day is a day of rest or the last chance for many people to go on trips before the summer ends. For students, it is the last chance to organize parties before school starts again. In some neighborhoods, people organize fireworks displays, barbecues and public arts or sports events. The football season starts on or around Labor Day and many teams play their first game of the year during Labor Day weekend.  My home is in Michigan. There are plenty of hills, lakes, rivers, streams, beaches, forests and even some mountains for skiing in Michigan. When I was young we usually celebrated Labor Day by going to the beach one last time. This was always an inland lake beach. It was crowded. We drove to the beach and so did everyone else. The beaches were sandy and clean and crowded. I remember one year I got so sun burnt on my legs that I couldn't walk for two days. Another time my car broke down on the way home. It can be difficult to have fun sometimes.

A visit to the dentist

I go every six months to my dentist for  a cleaning and check up because I want healthy teeth. My dentist is Kiyo. His office is in MinamiUrawa in front of the station. We met at the Rinri Houjinkai long, long ago. He and his wife were my students for several years. He is a great guy and a great dentist. He is very thorough. That means that he works until the job is completely done. That also means that he "leaves nothing to chance". All his equipment is high-tech. All his staff use microscopes when necessary while working on patients teeth or gums. I went there Tuesday. It was my last free day from the Kindergartens. (I started back today). My wife and youngest daughter are also in his care (are his patients). He did some especially good work on Eri's teeth. This time my cleaning went smoothly except for one tooth that had some plaque. She worked hard to remove it. And then Kiyo fixed one tooth that had a chip on the top. I am all set for another six months. Brushing, cleaning and flossing for  a happy smile!

My violin

I had a violin lesson three days ago, Monday. I practice regularly. I practice hard. Of course, there is progress but progress is slow. I have an excellent teacher. She comes twice a month for a one hour lesson. She always stays 90 minutes and sometimes up to two hours! I'm very lucky. I finally got a mirror. It is necessary to see how I hold the violin and how I bow. Recently I tried tuning my violin by the pegs,. There are four of them. (See photo) I also have tuning screws that are adjusters. I always use them. My teacher and my friend, Yuko, tune my violin with the pegs, no problem. So I waned to try it. I did it long ago and broke a string. So I have been very careful recently tuning with the pegs. But last Saturday, as I was preparing to practice, while adjusting the e-string it broke with a loud BAM! I called Shimokura in Omiya. I usually get my strings there. I had a choice to go there Saturday after my lessons or Sunday on the way home from bridge. I chose the latter. But, our bridge session ended a bit later than usual. I called them and asked them to please stay open until we arrived. We got there just at 6:30 which is closing time. They replaced the string. All's well that ends well.

Weeding

Three Mondays ago I hurt my back while weeding next door. I started pulling up long weeds. I did this from a standing position instead of a crouched position so I hurt my lower back. When that happened I had to sit up very straight. When I sat for a long time it hurt when I got up. If I sat on our sofa it really hurt. I lied down as much as possible. I also lied down on hard surfaces such as the table in my school and at the Kenkatsu Center between my Saturday lessons. (They provide me with a private room for 30 minutes between lessons. I usually nap then.) That helped a lot. Little by little my back healed. It is pretty much (95%) healed now. So, I was back out weeding three times this past week. I also got  a surprise as one neighbor pulled some of the weeds nearest his house. Now, I have decided to make a "Bamboo Island". There are a lot of bamboo in one area. I did dig some of them out and that was a lot of hard work. So, I will leave the bamboo only in this one place. You can see it in the photo. I have to pull out the weeds in and around the bamboo. I plan to trim it when necessary. I wonder what it will look like.

Bridge

As I said on Sunday, we played bridge in an "Under 50" this time. We have around 30 MPs now. At this competition there were some new faces sprinkled in with all the regulars. Everyone is very friendly and there is always laughter and chatting. But when we start to play, it is very serious. This time there were so many players that Miwako and I went to a different room to play. Our opponents would travel to our table. This room was much bigger but it was rather warm because there were also a lot of high level payers. (They must get heated up when they play.) Our results in the AM session were poor. We came in 19th out of 21 teams. Our success rate was 43. 18%. In the PM session we did better with a success rate of 55.83% and we were 3rd out of 21 teams. As it was an all day event, there was only one final result. You can see in the photo that we finished 13th of 21 teams. We felt it was a success because our total for the day was 49.21%. The most fun was late in the PM session as we made some difficult, major bids and were successful. Miwako also made a very difficult hand which I bid too high, I thought. So, our partnership proved successful. We will try again this Sunday.
