July 2015

July 2015 has come to an end. The US of A celebrates it's Independence day (birthday) in July. My July was split (divided) into two halves. It was pre-RAM Big Event, July 19th, and then after that. Before July 19th I was busy preparing for the event. I had to practice the violin a lot. I had to assist my students with their preparations. That was a big project and it ended well. After July 19th, I have much more free time. That is because the three Kindergartens where I teach don't have English lessons in summer. So, I am using that free time with two projects. One is to get my kids' Homework packages perfected. I have to check all of them to make sure there are no mistakes. I want to sell them. The second project is to redo our Home Page. Of course, Miwako and I are working together on these. I am not sure when those projects will be completed, but I hope before Silver Week in September. In the meantime, bridge, weeding, violin, Blogging, teaching, making Puzzlers, drinking all continue. How about you? How was your July?

Rick vs. Cockroach

I clean my school every Wednesday morning. I move most everything (90%) from the east side of the room to the west side. Then I sweep the area, including the lavatory, and then mop the floor. I then do the reverse. After the floor dries I move most everything from the west side to east side and then sweep and mop. After the floor dries, I put everything back into its original place. Yesterday, when I picked up my bucket a quick, dark movement caught my eye. Cockroach! He hid until I finished half the room. I got my small outdoor broom and moved the copy machine and he came running out and crashed into the wall. That was my chance. I smashed him once, twice, thrice with the broom. He was groggy and crashed back into the wall. I then smashed him and crashed him and jabbed him with my weapon. He finally was beaten. I swept him outside and into the sewer. Victory! The picture is a dragonfly that landed on the empty lot next to my house after my weeding on Tuesday. It is better than a cockroach picture, don't you think?

20 year anniversary event

Two Sundays ago Miwako and I held our RAM English 20 year special event. It was at the Kenkatsu Center in InaMachi. It was for our students. Of course I wanted to play my violin on stage. We had three goals: 1. Perform on stage before a live audience. 2. Speak English on stage. 3. Enjoy the experience. We believe it was a success. 60 students or so were on and off the stage during the day. I was worried about the time schedule. I didn't know if we had enough time for all to perform but we finished just on time. As Shakespeare (and MitoKohMon) would say "All's well, that ends well". Since that time I have talked to all the students. Everyone said "I was nervous". I was glad to hear that because, I was nervous, too. I was also happy to see how well everyone performed. I know how much we all practiced. I was very pleased  with such wonderful results. So, now I am thinking, perhaps we will do it again next year. Everyone, start practicing now!

Shovel Attack

There are several kinds of weeds, grass and a small type (kind) of bamboo in the empty lot next door. I have learned how to pull the weeds there. One kind is actually fun to pull. They are tall. They are a light green color. They have shallow root clusters and are also connected by long roots. They come up easily. Another kind grows wide and near the earth (ground/soil). I have picked a lot of these so far. I decided to tackle (attack) the bamboo last Saturday AM. I started before 5:00. There was some rain last Thursday so that made the ground soft. But the bamboo have very deep and strong roots. I used my shovel. When I pull weeds I am low to the ground, crouching, using my sickle and dig. But I had to dig deep down to cut the bamboo roots with my shovel. It took about 45 minutes to clear the area. It was fun too, because when I got the shovel deep I pushed it hard at the bamboo root and I could hear it crack with a "POM" just like when the Tsuru lands on a tree. It was hard work and good exercise. I used my legs and back muscles. Don't you think it looks nice?

My violin

Let me say Thank You to Yuko, Mari, Yukari and Sakura for allowing me to play the violin with you. We practiced hard and I really appreciate your patience and understanding. Back in April I got the idea to hold the RAM Event at Kenkatsu and immediately reserved the Hall. I was lucky as it was available (open) 7/19. The main goal was for the students to perform on stage; speak English, dance, play instruments. Of course, it was a chance for me to play my violin. I believe that there is no better lesson than trying to do what you have practiced in a real situation. For example, meeting the foreigner on the street and speaking English with him. It's the same when we play bridge. We use a computer game to practice. We also discuss strategies. But, when it is show time, things change. The same happens to me when I am on stage. It is interesting how good I am when I am alone in my school practicing, and how I can make so many mistakes on stage. It really was an excellent lesson for me. I have much to learn and I look forward to the next challenge. Again, thank you all.

Bridge Comeback

I lied. I said that I would drink Monday after bridge but that was not true. After our special RAM Anniversary Event Sunday I just had to celebrate with Miwako. We took our daughter and mom-in-law to Azumakuru on Naka-sendo in Ageo for food and drinks. And I have to admit I drank too much. But it was delicious. The next morning we headed to Yotsuya for an Under 50 bridge competition. We began slowly. We made some errors. But I was surprised to see that we came in 3rd out of 12 teams. Perhaps there were some rookies here. That gave us hope for the PM session. After lunch we settled down. We bid more wisely and played better. Our defense was very good. I made several bold (daring/strong) bids. Two worked out well. One was a disaster (big mistake). Miwako and I both played well. As a result we came in first place out of 15 teams. With that, we won two free tickets to our next tournament. (a 2,000en value!). We also earned Master Points for both sessions.  We will definitely go drinking this Saturday night.

Thank you, everybody

In our opening remarks last Sunday Miwako and I said there are three main goals for the 7/19 RAM English Service Big Event. They are:
1. To speak English.
2. To perform before a live audience.
3. To enjoy.
I think all three goals were met (achieved). There were eight skits. There were performances of the piano, violin, flute, shamisen, guitar and even grass whistling. There were several dance routines. Some were long and some were short. There was also a lot of singing. There was a magic show and a puppet show. What a gala, fun event it was! I was really surprised and very pleased at how each group created its own performance. I also appreciate the leaders who appeared and took charge of organizing the dialogues and rehearsals. The group efforts were fantastic. I must say that each group was a success, whether big or small. Finally, we want to say Thank You for the gifts that you gave us. The flowers are in our house and look beautiful. We are also eager to try our new ice-coffee maker and drink some delicious wine and sake. Cheers!

Marine Day, Japan

I did not go to the sea yesterday. I played bridge. I really do like the sea though. I have to take a dip in the sea some time soon. In the meantime ,here is some Marine Day info for you.
1. Marine Day, or 'Umi no hi', only became a nationally recognized holiday in Japan in 1996. Since 2003, it has been celebrated on the third Monday in July. Before 1996, it was known as Marine Memorial Day, and was not a national holiday.
2. Marine Memorial Day was established in 1941 to mark the anniversary of the 1876 return of the Meiji Emperor to the Port of Yokohama, on the two-masted topsail schooner Meiji-Maru, from a tour of the Tohoku and Hokkaido regions. It was established as a holiday to express gratitude for the gifts of the sea, honour its importance, and pray for the prosperity of Japan as a maritime nation.
3. As it is a modern holiday, there are no particular traditional ceremonies associated with the day. However, in celebration of Marine Day all the national aquariums organize special events, water sports competitions, water shows, and cultural activities relating to the sea take place. Many people take advantage of this summer holiday to have a rather fitting day out at the beach.

Finished!

I teach at three Kindergartens. They are Monday, Tuesday and Friday mornings. They all ended this week for the summer. They will resume (start again) in September! That means I have a lot of extra time from now till then. I hope to use this extra time wisely. I have two projects that I want to do. First, I have a homework (HW) program for the kids at my school. It is weekly. One is for preschoolers (kindergartners) one is for pre-Eiken kids (1st to 3rd or 4th graders) and one is for the older kids who take our Eiken courses. I started them two years ago and they have all been very successful. Actually, I made the preschooler HW when I taught at the after-Kindergarten lessons until last year. This year, I sold the preschooler HW to the moms. It proved to be popular. After I revamp (make anew) all three HWs, I hope to sell all three types (kinds) of HW on a large scale, probably on the Internet. My target is for Grannies who want to help their grand kids with English. Wish me luck!

Bridge defeat

We went to Yokohama lat Sunday to play bridge. We participated in an Under 50 competition. We rarely go to Yokohama. But, there were no other competitions in Tokyo this day. Naturally we met a lot of our regular competitors as well as some old friends. Some never come to Tokyo. It turns out that these players were all pretty (rather) good. Our very first hand we played passively. That means weakly. That means not aggressively. That means not strongly. We learned later that all the other teams scored the high results. We were the only team with a low sore. I made many mistakes. Miwako made a few, too, but not as many as me (I did). My play was poor. Miwako's was as good as always. My concentration was very low. I am not sure why. I have to try harder from now on. We only go on Sundays so I want to succeed as much as possible. Wish us luck!

UESS Summer Party

I was invited to attend the UESS (Urawa English Speaking Society) Summer Party in Urawa at the Saitama Kaikan last Saturday. It was excellent. They invite their regular members as well as any Japanese person who wants to come. They have to pay 3,000en. They also invite foreigners to come. The foreigners do not have to pay anything. The idea (goal) is to give the Japanese people an opportunity (chance) to speak to native speakers outside the classroom. It is always a gala event. This time there were as many people as the last time, about 85. The food was very good. Of course alcohol, as well as soft drinks, are available. The foreigners came from Romania, Nepal, USA, Canada, Australia, England, Germany, etc. I met some old friends and made some new ones. I am always surprised at how well many of these foreigners can speak English. One young lady from Romania told me that in her country a lot of TV programs are in English with subtitles. So they can listen to a lot of English. Anyway, I had a good time. I'm looking forward to their Christmas Party.

New attack

The vacant lot next to our house has many weeds. I was under the weather for about three weeks so I couldn't pull any weeds then. But my original plan is still in effect. I will make the vacant lot as beautiful as possible in three years. I hope to pull as many weeds as possible before the rainy season ends. Then I will cut down the high weeds. I will not do the whole (entire/100% of the) field, but only about half. That is the half that is next to my house. However, it hasn't rained recently so the ground is not as wet as before. When it is wet it is easy to pull the weeds. It also it getting hotter. That means that it is not as cool as before. So, I will have to get up earlier to pull the weeds. I do not want to pull the weeds in the evening. There are too many mosquitoes. I don't like mosquitoes. Do you? I didn't think anybody likes those little pests.

Lunch

After my kindergarten lesson in Kounosu last Friday, I returned to Okegawa by train. Naturally, (Of course), I was hungry. It was drizzling. That means that it was raining just a little OR a very light rain. Anyway, I wanted to go to lunch at a restaurant. One of my regular places to go to is on NakaSenDou. It is Oshizuka, an Udon shop. As it was raining and I was walking it seemed too far. I thought about going to the Indian restaurant for some Curry and Nan. But, as I left the station and I saw this Ramen shop right on the corner. I had never been there, but as soon as I saw it I decided to go there. It was just too convenient. I ordered the vegetable lunch. The inside was dark and quiet. There were 5 or 6 other customers. The woman taking orders never smiled. The cook never smiled. The customers never smiled. The food was OK. It worked out well this time but I am sure that I will never go there again.

USA Women's Soccer Team...Congratulations!

I told my students that the final score would be 4 to 0 or 3 to 1. I was sure the Americans would win. They were very hungry for revenge from 4 years ago. However I didn't think it would be that easy. They scored 4 goals in the first 16 minutes. Were Nadeshiko sleeping? Did they all have hangovers? Did they forget how to play? They looked like teenagers playing against adults. I was watching the game. But, as soon as they scored the fourth goal I went to work. The J team was just not as good as the A team. I returned later to watch the recording. They did finally get some life by scoring two goals. They looked like a much better team.  But, it was too little too late. The USA wasn't finished either. They scored one more goal to make the final score 5 to 2. It is obvious that America was the better team than Nadeshiko this day. I look forward to the next time they meet in a tournament.

Happy Birthday, USA

I was born in Detroit, MI, USA. I have celebrated many Independence Days with family and friends. I am proud to be an American. Here is some info from the net.
1. Independence Day is annually celebrated on July 4 and is often known as "the Fourth of July". It is the anniversary of the publication of the declaration of independence from Great Britain in 1776.
2. Independence Day is a day of family celebrations with picnics and barbecues, showing a great deal of emphasis on the American tradition of political freedom. Activities associated with the day include watermelon or hot dog eating competitions and sporting events: baseball games, three-legged races, swimming activities and tug-of-war games.
3. Many people display the American flag outside their homes or buildings. Many communities arrange fireworks that are often accompanied by patriotic music.
4. In 1775, people in New England began fighting the British for their independence. On July 2, 1776, the Congress secretly voted for independence from Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence was first published two days later on July 4, 1776. The first public reading of the Declaration of Independence was on July 8, 1776. Delegates began to sign the Declaration of Independence on August 2, 1776.

I was sick. I had a bad cold and a fever. It started about three weeks ago. At first I got a sore throat. Then I got feverish  a week later. I bought ice cream at Baskin Robins 31 two weeks ago but I couldn't eat it because of my cold. I taught all my lessons but some were difficult, especially the kids. It was rather hard to teach in my condition. But, of course, I did it. And then last weekend my fever was at its highest: 37.4! We had a full day of bridge planned for Sunday in Takadanobaba. Should I go or stay home and rest? Of course I went. I wore a mask. We had a so-so AM session and then roared back (got much stronger) in the PM session. We played well and had few mistakes. The results were very good. (see pic). I couldn't drive home though, so Miwako did. Back home, I went to bed under a couple of blankets to sweat out my fever. I was much better the next day, BUT, I forgot to call my students. They were expecting me at school Sunday evening to practice MitoKomon skit. Oh My God! I'm sorry.

Stringer

I have an adult lesson at my school on Fridays. It starts at 1:30PM. Last Friday I had two lovely students. Of course, all my students are lovely but this day there were two of them. I called another lovely student, Yuko, the day before, to help me with my violin string tuning. She used to own my violin. That is, I purchased it from her. I love it. But, I have very little confidence on how to tune it. You need to (must) turn the keys at the top of the violin neck to tune the strings. I once tried adjusting them but I broke one string immediately. It went "Twang!" and was broken. So, I am scared (afraid/reluctant) to try it again. Yuko was kind enough to come and tune it for me. Her best time was during my Friday lesson. I thought it would be a nice experience for the two students also. So, she came and with the electronic tuner she set it up for me. The new strings sound nice and my violin is now tuned to perfection, thanks to Yuko. I'm a happy violinist-wannabe. PICTURE: All eyes are on the tuner.

New Strings

I purchased my violin used from one of my students three years ago. However I am not sure how to maintain it. That means how to take care of it (care for it). I got the feeling recently that it needed new strings. I went some time last year to get new strings but I can't remember exactly when. I was told that it is best to replace the strings about every six month and especially a couple of weeks before a concert. My next "concert" is 7/19, our RAM Event at Kenkatsu. The timing was right. I told some students that I was going to go to Tokyo to buy the strings. One student asked "Isn't there a shop in Omiya?"  I remembered that there was. So, I went there last Thursday and bought them. The guy put them on there but they were not tuned (adjusted) properly. I tried adjusting the strings by myself. I tuned them close enough to practice but they weren't right. So, I called my violin friend. What happened? See tomorrow's BLOG.
