A day trip to Shinjuku Part 3

As I said before I used to go to a Japanese language school in Shinjuku, maybe 33 years ago. I went to the east side of the station. That is the ALTA side. It brought back memories. Then I tried to remember where the school was. It was about a 15 to 20 minute walk from the station. I started walking from the station when I saw many bicycles locked up. I thought they were rent-a-bicycle. But, NO. They were bikes that people can park there and a pay a small fee. So I started walking in the direction that I remember. I then found a map of the area. That was no help at all. It was a nice day so I kept on (continued) waking in a South-easterly direction. I crossed a couple of main roads. But nothing looked familiar. I tried to imagine the location. I do remember a brick building with lots of shrubs and trees across from the school. But I couldn't locate (find) it. I walked a few more blocks then gave up. My knee was starting to hurt. So, I turned back to the station. I got there about 4pm. This was the east side which I always used. People were everywhere. I went straight to Track 4 which was the Takasaki line. I got on and the train left the platform. My Shinjuku adventure was over.

A day trip to Shinjuku Part 2

My biggest surprise were the new buildings. I saw LUMINE EST, Flags, LUMINE 2, MIRIANA TOWER, NEWoMAN just to name a few. The buildings were new and shiny. Shinjuku station was also new in some places. I walked around  the south side of the station twice. There were lots and lots of people. There were of course lots and lots of foreigners. I didn't speak to anyone though I could hear the foreign tongues (languages). No "Foreigner Hunting" this day. I was happy to take in the sights and sounds. There were several events gong on around the station. It made for a festive, lively atmosphere. I was most surprised at the "new" Takashimaya. I visited there several times way back when (long, long ago). Now it is connected to Shinjuku station. I remember it being across the street from the station. I then saw the Red Cross Blood donation bus. I decided to donate. But first, I had a sandwich and a coffee at a coffee shop. The lunch was pretty good.  As usual the Red Cross people were very kind. My donation went off without a hitch (with no problems.)

A day trip to Shinjuku Part 1

My plan last Sunday was to work in the garden. I wanted to pull out one of our plants. It is a Hydrangea bush. I hoped to do it early in the AM but I woke up too late because I enjoyed drinking Saturday night. So, Sunday AM I was relaxing on the sofa. It was a beautiful morning. I thought "I must do something." I did not want to spend the entire day just watching TV. I rescheduled the plant removal for the  evening when it was cooler. So, what could I do? I talked to M about it and decided to take a trip to Yoyogi Park. Perhaps I would visit Meiji Shrine and Omote-Sandou. Cool. I biked to Okegwawa station. I just caught the 11:15 for Odawara. I was in Shinjuku 35 minutes later. I planned to take the Yamanote line to Yoyogi when I changed my mind. I decided to check out Shinjuku. When I first arrived in Japan. I lived in Chigasaki. I entered a Japanese language school to study Japanese. With that I got a student visa. I could stay in Japan two years with that Visa. I commuted to Shinjuku every weekday for two years and then walked to the school. It was from 9AM to noon. I bought a 6 month train pass to and from Shinjuku so I also visited Shinjuku on weekends. I was very surprised when I walked around Shinjuku station this time!

A new toy by Kuma

Right now I’m excited just like a kid because I decided to buy a new computer. The PC that I have used for many years has a battery life, but it seems that they have not produced any more.
Initially I was thinking of buying a cheap PC as long as it worked correctly. However my wife’s idea was different. She said that regarding the machine, working correctly is important, but feeling something fun when you use it is more important. “Why don’t you get the kind that you like“ she added.  So I selected Fujitsu’s Windows 10. The color is red, small and ultra light 770g, quick response 10s, high definition, price is pretty high.
Now having a new PC brings back a lot of memories. Since I was a kid, when I get the new “toy” that I wanted, I was thrilled and excited.
When I was in elementary school, I was really happy when my parents bought me the bicycle I wanted. I rode around our town by bicycle almost every day.
When I entered high school, my sister gave me a camera for celebration. It was a famous machine called Yashica Electro 35. She knew that I was into focusing and shutter sounds of this camera.
After graduating from college and getting employed by a company, I bought a car with my own money. It was a popular compact car named Matsuda Familiar. I often visited my hometown Osaka by car not Shinkansen.
I’m older now, but still using a new machine makes me happy and excited just like a Kid.

So, what is a Frixion pen?

I got the following info from the Internet about Frixion pens. The Pilot FriXoin pen is the most astonishing (amazing) Japanese gel pen currently available. It has erasable ink that disappears when hot. Each pen comes with (includes) a hard rubber eraser that makes heat with friction. This means that it is very clean when you erase it. There are no eraser shavings left over. And the paper does not tear or get thinner. When you erase it, you have to rub it straight. The ink disappears! It is so clean. You can write again and erase again. The paper never changes. The eraser never changes either. It never gets smaller. I have been using my FriXion pen since April 7th. It still looks like new. The pen that I received for free at Haneda is 250yen. Of course mine was free. As a matter of fact when we returned to Haneda after our trip, I found the the same place. This time there were three young Japanese guys doing the campaign. I asked "May I have a pen?". One guy quickly produced one from his pocket and offered it to me. I smiled and said "Thank you". Now I have two FriXion pens....for FREE!

A free pen

We were waiting at Haneda airport to catch our plane to Toyama. I decided to do some sudoku. I had my book. But no pencil! It seems that when I changed bags back home my pencil fell out of the book. What to do? I went on a search for a pencil. I couldn't find a convenience store. I did find shop that had lead pencils. But they were 600yen. I decided to wait until we got to our hotel and get one there perhaps. Then I went to get a map of the airport. I found a couple of young people doing a campaign for ANA credit cards. I asked if they had a map and they showed me the place to get one. I then noticed that they had a lot of pencils in plastic bags. I asked what they were promoting. They told me. I said I collect Delta mileage onmy visa. The young lady was disappointed. I asked what the pens were. The guy said "Frixion pens" He explained that it is a pen with eraseable ink. I asked him how much thwey were. He said the magic word "Free". I said thank you and was able to do my sudoku on the plane to Toyama. Lucky!

Sudoku

I bought a sudoku book last November. Do you know sudoku? It is a puzzle that contains only numbers. Actually the numbers are 1 through 9. There are also boxes that you have to put the Numbers in. I'm sorry! It is too difficult to explain. I wanted to try it again. Actually I used to do these puzzles long, long ago. The book I bought was level 4, 5 and 6. Well, on April 4th, I finished the final puzzle. It was puzzle #105. I learned different ways to solve these puzzles. I became very good at it. So, I bought the next book. It is Levels 7, 8 and 9. These are the most difficult levels. That means that the puzzles are getting more difficult. I started doing them last week. Well, they are very difficult! I am now on Puzzle 8. That was a disaster! I couldn't finish it. I couldn't finish puzzle 7 either. I have found that I must go S-L-O-W-L-Y. That is, take my time. Wish me luck.

Professional Golf

Perhaps this is my new hobby. I watched the Masters with interest this year. I am not a big golf fan. I used to golf. But, that was long, long ago. I know that it is very difficult. I do not like to golf, but recently I have watched it on TV. I have now become interested in the golf tournaments that are shown on TV every year. So, I watched the Masters the final three days last week. The timing is perfect for me. The telecast started at 4AM and finished around 8AM. That is my free time. I saw the Saturday, Sunday and Monday rounds. As you may or may not now, one round is 18 holes. I know that recently a lot of young golfers have become the champions in recent years. No one has dominated. That means that there is a different winner every time. Of course, every one knows Tiger Woods. He won may times when he was younger. He is now 43 years old. The current champions are Rory McIlroy, Jordan Speith, Justin Rose, Bubba Watson, Ricky Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Vija Singh, Hideki Matusyama just to name a few. I 'd like to learn more about them this year.

A trip to Toyama Part 3 RETURN HOME

On our final day in Toyama I got up at 6AM. I went to the bath to relax and shave. I cut myself shaving. It bled a lot. That was a drag. Then I went to have breakfast. This business hotel does not offer dinner or lunch; only breakfast. And it was a magnificent breakfast, indeed! However when I first entered the dining area, I inquired (asked) about a TV. I wanted to watch the final round of the Masters. I then saw that there were four televisions on four different walls! I found a space, got my b-fast and settled down to watch and eat. Glorious! Other patrons (customers) were watching MLB. Ohtani was pitching. And the b-fast was just super. Later Miwako joined me and we ate as I watched the end of the Masters. The Masters winner was Patrick Reed (see pic). Back at the room we packed our things, checked out, drove to the airport, returned the rent-a-car, went to Kitokito airport and flew to Haneda. It was a pleasant flight. At Haneda we got a bus for Omiya. I was back at our school at 2:30. That was the end of a very memorable journey. BTW I got one more flixion pen when we were at Haneda.

A trip to Toyama Part 2 IN TOYAMA

We arrived safely, got the rent-a-car and drove to the hotel. Very inexpensive with adequate accommodations. The staff were all older, gray-haired gents. We had dinner next door at an Izakaya. I didn't drink. Next day the weather was fine. Then it rained. Then is snowed. Really! Then it was fine. Then is was windy. Then it rained. We enjoyed coffee at the local Starbucks. It was written that this Starbucks was "The most beautiful Starbucks in the World" last year. It was quite nice. (see pic) and the weather got better. We then drove to M's uncle's house to meet O-jiiisan. He is quite the cool gent, as I said before. He is 99 years old. He smokes of course, and sips sake. He also putts around the garden, pulling weeds and cleaning up. We talked with M's uncle and he invited us to have dinner with him that evening. We couldn't refuse. M and I drove to visit two grave sights, shopped and checked into our next hotel before returning to Uncle's house.

A trip to Toyama Part 1 GOING THERE

Miwako and I took a trip to Toyama. Toyama is her parents roots. So, naturally, she has many relatives there. Her grandfather is 99 years old. He lives at home. He said he does some weeding, but mostly watches TV. He also drinks sake and smokes cigarettes. He is such a cool old gent. So, we decided it would be nice to visit him. I have free time now so we flew to Toyama. We usually drive to places around Japan for vacations. But, we had some airline mileage saved up, so, we flew. This was only my second to fly domestic. The previous time was 27 years ago when I flew to Hokkaido. Anyway, let me tell you the story. M made reservations at two different hotels. One is in front of Toyama station. The other is nearby. She also reserved a rent-a-car. We took the limousine bus to Haneda airport on Saturday. That was smooth.Hoverer we had to wait 4 hours for our flight. BUT, there was a flight delay. We finally left Haneda at 6:50 instead of 6PM. That was OK because I wanted to see Haneda. They gave us \2,000 worth of credit to use while we were waiting. Cool. The flight was a bit rough as we were in a storm during the landing. But no worries.

Huis Ten Bosch by Akiko

I went to “Huis Ten Bosch” last week. My friend lives in Sasebo in Nagasaki so she took me there. “Huis Ten Bosch” is Dutch and it means "House of Forest” in English. It is also named after the Palace Huis Ten Bosch in Den Haas, Netherlands. With special permission form the Netherlands Royal family there is a palace which is the same size and appearance as Palace Huis Ten Bosch in the park. Anyway, it’s the biggest them park in Japan. It’s 1.5 times bigger than Tokyo Disneyland.
There are many attractions, restaurants, three museums and four hotels. We couldn’t see everything so we decided to see two limited-time events. One is the “Tuilp Festival”. As you know, the Netherlands is famous for tulips. We can see about 700 variety of tulips now. They are so beautiful.
The other event is the “Kingdom of Lights”. After sunset a large illumination show begins. It has about 13,000,000 light bulbs! We can see the full view of the illumination show from the observatory tower. The colors and shapes change rapidly and I never got tired of seeing them. When I looked up at the tower from the ground, the lights were running down and were making a big waterfall. It looked so fantastic. I'd like to go again someday.
