My February

February, 2018 has come and gone. I have two things to write about. One was the Olympics, which I wrote about yesterday. The other thing was that I was on the wagon for this month. That means that i didn't drink any alcohol. Actually, I started my abstnti0n (abstain=no drinking) on January 29th. So, it has been 31 days. And because I didn't drink I did the following: 1. Throw some things away. First were shoes. We got rid of some old ones and now we have more space in the shoe cabinet. 2. I cleaned my school. I put up some new "elephant numbers". I found several that still had the original yellow color. 2. I  bought tennis balls for all the chairs. They are so shiny now! (see pic). 3. I made a new type of homework for our elementary school kids at our school. 4. I put up two new posters and brought some pictures home. We are now ready to welcome any new students. I went to the gym 14 times. I finished reading one book and have now started reading about Leonardo da Vinci. I did a lot of sudoku and spent my Sundays at home watching CNN news and relaxing. I may continue not drinking for a while.

Pyeongchang 2017 Olympics

Well, 2017 winter Olympics have drawn to a close. That mans that they have ended. I really enjoyed them.m This is the first time that I saw the Opening ceremonies, the events almost every day and then the closing ceremonies. I didn't watch everything, but quite a bit. I saw, figure skating, speed skating, the luge, ski jumps, snowboarding, pursuit and curling. Curling was hte most intriguing. Each player really has to think a lot and then try their best to make a good shot. I saw some curling back when I lived in Michigan. It wasn't so interesting then though. But for these Olympics I had two good reasons to watch/ them. One good reason was because I wasn't drinking. The second good reason was that Miwako was really into (interested in) these Olympics. she followed the Japan womens' curling very closely. So, I saw a lot of it. The biggest surprise was that the mens' USA curling won the gold medal. They all looked looked regular people, not macho ahletes. (see pic) But they kept winning and finally won GOLD with a beautiful "strike" for five points. I will remember these Olympic Games for a long time.

Tea Ceremony by Eiko

I am learning tea ceremony. My tea ceremony teacher (see pic) asked me to assist her in the kindergarten. I went there at 9:00 on February 14th. There was the tea teacher and 4 assistants including me. We prepared for laying mats (tatami) and boiling water. The tea ceremony began at 10:00. There were 6 classes. There were roughly 20 kids in each class. We offered tea and sweets to every kid. In addition, as influenza was going around, we had to use paper cups. We made tea in tea bowls. Then we poured it into paper cups. We finished doing one class in 20 minutes. We finished to make tea for 120 kids at around 12 :00. We cleaned up the classroom by 1:00 P.M.
I think tea ceremony is a very good experience for kids. My teacher goes to kindergartens, schools, public halls, etc. to teach Tea. She teaches Tea in many situations. I sometimes go to these places with her. The assisting tea teacher is also very good experience for me.
My French friends made Tea at my teacher’s house last summer. My grandchildren also made Tea there. They were all pleased to encounter Japanese culture.
My teacher is very obliging and generous. I respect her.

The reason I ‘m learning Tea is that Tea ceremony doesn’t match with me at all. I need that slow tempo and elegance!

Two weekends ago

I had a terrific weekend February 10th to the 12th. February 12th was "Constitution Day" in Japan so I was off. Allow me to tell you about that weekend. I have been on the wagon since January 29th. That means that I have not had any alcohol since then. I am abstaining, we say. So, I have been sleeping very regularly.  I go to bed before 11PM and wake up around 5:30AM. I have plenty of energy. And I am doing many things. Every Saturday after my final lesson I go to the gym. February 10th was no exception (different). Then on Sunday and Monday (the holiday), I...1. washed the car inside an out 2. took some things to a recycle shop in Ageo. 3. read my book "Sapiens" 3. did lots of Sudoku 4. cleaned up the garden. 5. watched lots of Olympics on TV 6. watched a recording of Super Bowl LII 7. went to a hot bath spa in Kitamomto with M. 8. played one game of Othello with M. 9. watched lots of CNN news 10. Went to the gym on Monday. 11. Watched and copied "Terminator" ("I'll be back."). 12. wrote a postcard and walked to the mailbox to post it. I can't remember the rest. But, I totally enjoyed it!

Winter Olympics 2018

Are you watching the 2018 Pyongyang Olympics? I get to (am able to) watch them at home on Saturday night and Sunday. Why? 1. Because Miwako is always watching them. 2. I don't drink on Saturday nights this month. 3. I am at home on Sundays this month. They Olympics are fantastic! There has been some trouble and delays because of strong winds. That is unfortunate (too bad). The North Koreans sent a delegation (representatives from their country). NO COMMENT. Other that that (besides that) everything is just wonderful. As always I cannot see my home countrymen participate because I live in Japan. I mostly see events which have Japanese athletes competing. This is cool. Miwako is really into it. She watches everything she can from start to finish. I saw a lot of ski jumps (I love the sound that the skis make as they go down the ramp). I saw snowboarding. Cool, but that's not for me. I saw Hockey. That's for me. I saw skating. Figure skaters are so graceful, and speed skaters are so F-A-S-T! I saw lots of curling. It's like chess or Japanese Shogi or Othello on ice. Smooth! I'm looking forward to watching more this week.

President's Day USA

Yesterday was President's Day in the good, old USA. Here's the scoop.
Presidents Day originated as the celebration of the birthday of George Washington, the first president of the country. This day was known as “Washington’s Birthday,” and it was informally observed in many communities across the country from the year following his death in 1799.
The holiday was unofficially observed for most of the 1800s. Then, in 1879, it was signed into law as a federal holiday.
In the late 1960s, Congress proposed a measure known as the Uniform Monday Holiday Act (JAPANESE "HAPPY MONDAY"). The act shifted several federal holidays from specific dates to some Mondays. It was thought that moving the holidays to Monday would give employees additional three-day weekends and reduce employee absenteeism.
The act  combined Washington’s birthday, which falls on February 22, with Lincoln’s birthday, which falls on February 12. Thus, though the holiday is still written as “Washington’s Birthday” in federal law, it soon was popularly understood to be a celebration of Washington, Lincoln, and all other citizens who served as President of the United States – thus evolving to become “Presidents Day.”

Valentines Day

Of course, everyone knows 'Valentienes Day'. In America, that is the day when sweethearts exchange gifts to show their love and affection. What gifts are popular in America? I found a list. 1. candy/sweets 2. greeting cards 3. flowers 4. romantic dinner 5. wine. 6. gift cards 7. jewelry 8. clothing 9. perfume/cologne 10. lingerie/pajamas 11. event tickets. Men and women exchange gifts on February 14th. Long ago, I gave my girlfriend roses only twice. (alas, I am not very romantic) On the other hand the Japanese system, or belief, in Valentines day gift giving is quite different. I was happy to learn that the females give gifts to the males. I generally receive home-made chocolate or cookies from students. From family members I receive alcohol and some munchies or chocolate. Thank you all very much. Then comes White Day here in Japan. On this day the gents who received gifts are required to return the favor. That means that they should give a gift back to the people who gave them a gift. That is fair. However, I usually forget who gave me what. Most assuredly (absolutely/positively) I give my family members a gift. Happy Valentine's Day, everybody!

Pyonchang 2018

Have you been watching the 2018 Winter Olympics?
Did you see the 2018 Winter Olympics?
Are you watching the 2018 Winter Olympics?
All these questions have the same meaning. I saw a lot of Olympics last weekend.  I stayed home all weekend relaxing. I did a variety of things (many different things) One of hem was watching the XXIII Olympic Winter Games. My lovely wife, Miwako, likes to watch the Olympics. She watched the Olympics on the living room TV. So, I also watched them from my seat at the table. The are pretty interesting. I especially like (am very interested in) ice hockey. But I watched  several other events. These are the Winter Olympics so there is skating, skiing, sledding, curling, snowboarding and bobsledding just to name a few. We also watched the opening ceremonies. They were awesome! I really liked the guy from Tonga. Did you see him? They are still ten more days left in these Olympics. The weather has been bad. It has been very windy. So, some events have been cancelled. I hope all the athletes stays safe and all ends well.

A new chair

There are many different things in my school that I have to attend to. 'attend to' means to take care of OR watch over. Of course there are many teaching related things. There are books, pencils, markers, paper, laminated paper, folders, copy paper, wall charts, outdoor fliers, CDs, Eiken text books just to name a few. I also have furniture to think about. I bought new curtains and chairs two years ago. The curtains were easy. I bought the chairs on-line. I ordered them one by one. They are all different shapes and sizes and colors. The price ranged from 5,000en to 9,000en. Last year I had to buy cushions for two of the chairs because the seat became hard. And now, I had to replace the cheapest chair. After using to for only two years the material became frayed. That is, the material ripped. So, I decided to buy a new. I went NITORI in Okegawa. I bought my office chair there two years ago. This time I saw many chairs for our students. I tried 4 or 5 different ones and finally bought one (see pic). It is the newest addition of our school.

Watching the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is the most popular sporting event in America. I can watch it live here in Japan. It started at 8:30AM on Monday. So, I recorded it. I planned to watch it Monday night. I went to work. I listened to the first 15 minutes of the game (it is one hour) on the radio. There was a live broadcast on AFN (Armed Forces Network). Then I went by car to teach. I did not listen to the radio. After coming home, I went to the gym. I feared they may show it on the screen. But, safe! Then I went back to school and did not look at my e-mails or the Internet all day. I was concerned that I might inadvertently (accidentally) see the result somewhere. I finally got home at 9:15 Monday night. I ate supper quickly. I was in my jammies and got a blanket. I then settled into the sofa. I had the remote (control) in my right hand. But....there was no English broadcast. It was all in Japanese! Usually they do both. However, no worries. I ignored them and enjoyed the game. Of course, I could fast forward when necessary and replay, too. It was an excellent game. It was especially good because my team won!

Super Bowl LII

The Super Bowl is a contest between the two best American football teams at the end of the season. The US football season starts in September and ends in December. There are 32 teams. Each team plays 16 games. Then there is a playoff for the 12 remaining teams. They are the best teams at the end of the year. Finally, two teams are left to play in the championship game. We call this game The Super Bowl. This year it was the 52nd Super Bowl. (Yes, I remember the first one.) There is a lot of hype (excitement, advertising, talking, discussing) before the game. This year the two finalists were the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles. The NE team has won the Super Bowl five times. The Eagles reached the Super Bowl for the first time ever. And, lo and behold, the Eagles won the game. It was exciting. I will tell about how I heard and watched the game next week. Anyway, my hometown team is the Detroit Lions. They have never been to the Super Bowl. I hope they will be there next year!

Origins of Nissin by Kuma Part 2

4.The merger progressed smoothly, but they need a lot of effort on the name of the new      village. There were candidates such as Onari village, Kamogawa village and Okano            village. But those were not all decisive.
Finally, seven villages agreed at the “Nissin village” of the last candidate.
In other word, they chose “Nissin village” by taking the name “Nissin” from the name
“Nissin school” operated by seven villages.

5.The villagers created a completely new land name.
Why did villagers choose this word as the village name ?
Although it is a new land name, it’s origin is not clear !

6.(My guess)
It is very rare to choose the new village name from the school name.
I guess they were great troubled. They found the word “Nissin” in School name.
Nissin means to progress every day. Opponents were hard to oppose.

So, they chose a completely new land name.

My new toy

I do not have many toys. By 'toy' I mean electronic gadgets OR gizmos OR things. I have a cell phone. Actually it is new. I do not have a smart phone. But I do have three computers and a camera. These are enough for me. My newest toy is a Kindle fire. It is a device which I use to read books on. It was a gift from M's mom. I finished reading 50 GREAT STORIES and I tought I would try this different style (way) of reading. I like it. It is hands free so I find it comfortable. I can relax my arms and shoulders. Sometimes I even cross my arms. I turn the pages by a simple swipe on the screen. Is it easy to bookmark. The screen is not too big and not too small. It is just right. The device can be on-line but I don't use that. As I said, I have computers for that. I also needed a stand for it. You can see that in the photo. I bought it on-line for about 1,500en. I thought it would be cheaper to buy on-line books. But, of course, I need to charge the toy. So, maybe it's not so cheap. Anyway, after using it for two weeks, I'm lovin' it.

A paperback

I read a book recently. I started it in December and finished it at the end of last month. I bought it several years ago. The title is '50 Great Short Stories'. On the back cover it says:
'50 Great Short Stories' is a comprehensive selection from the world's finest short fiction. The authors represented range from Hawthorne, Maupassant, and Poe through Henry James, Conrad, Aldous Huxley, and James Joyce, to Hemingway, Katherine Anne Porter, Faulkner, E.B.White, Saroyan, and O'Connor. The variety in style and subject is enormous, but all these stories have one point in common-the enduring quality of the writing, which places them among the masterpieces of the world's fiction.
All of the stories are old. Some of them are older than I am. I enjoyed some more than others. That means that I enjoyed some stories but didn't enjoy others. And, there were some stories that I didn't understand at all. But I really enjoyed the English. There were words that I didn't know. There was English that we do not use anymore. The most interesting story for me was one written in an Irish brogue. That means accent. After reading it this time, I will go back and read each story again one by one this year. I hope to report on some.

Out with the bad, in with the good

Last Saturday, February 3rd, was "Setsubun no Hi" here is Japan. Miwako and I followed the custom as always. M bought the beans, we opened the window and said "Oni wa soto. Fuku wa uchi." as did many Japanese people this day. After tossing out the beans, we  ate some of the leftover beans. I did not eat my age worth. (That means that you eat as many beans as you are old PLUS one.) That is also part of the custom. We then ate some sushi rolls. Here is some info from wikipedia.
Setsubun is the day before the beginning of spring in Japan. The name literally means "seasonal division", but usually the term refers to the spring Setsubun, properly called Risshun celebrated yearly on February 3 as part of the Spring Festival (haru matsuri). In its association with the Lunar New Year, spring Setsubun can be and was previously thought of as a sort of New Year's Eve, and so was accompanied by a special ritual to cleanse away all the evilof the former year and drive away disease-bringing evil spirits for the year to come. This special ritual is called mamemaki (literally "bean scattering"). Setsubun has its origins in tsuina, a Chinese custom introduced to Japan in the eighth century.

Massage

I really enjoy getting a massage. For many years I went to a friend's place to get a massage. This friend was a student's husband. I got his massages for 8 or 9 or 10 years. I can't remember. Originally, I went to him because I had terrible lower back pains. And he healed them. I used to go every week. Then it changed to once a month. Last year an osteopath opened up right next door to my school. He advertised a sample massage for 1,800 yen for one hour. That is a good price. In December I told my regular guy that I would not continue his massages and I went for a sample massage next door. It was great! The osteopaths are Chinese. I have been watching many elderly Japanese people coming and going to the clinic for one year now. He told me that I can use my health insurance. So, I signed up for 5 massages. Basically it is 2,400 yen per hour. And this guy is great! He works very hard. He rubs me and kneads me and stretches me and of course massages me, too. Of course the massage feels good, although it does hurt somewhat. Last week he started a new approach on my back and, lo and behold, a small pain that I have had for many years is now gone! I expect to continue for a while.

My January

My January began by meeting lots of my in-laws. In-laws are your spouse's (husband's or wife's) family members. Miwako's sister and her family were in Japan from France. The other sister lives in Tokyo with her family. We had two get-togethers in Tokyo for eating and drinking including Karaoke. M and I stayed in Atami three nights for some R and R (Rest and Relaxation). Then all my lessons started up again. There were two parties with adult groups. One was dinner and one was a lunch. For the kids, there was an Eiken exam on the 20th. My students and I worked hard preparing for that. I went to the gym 11 times in January (BLOG about that coming soon). I also got a massage every Thursday at the place right next to our school. Those were great! (BLOG about that coming soon.) I imbibed (drank) as usual and we went out to eat a few times. I stayed home every Sunday to relax. I really enjoyed doing almost nothing except watching CNN news and as well as movies plus doing sudoku. I watched USA football, too. How was your January?
