Happy Halloween

Halloween is a fun celebration for kids in the USA. When I was young, my mother would take me and my older brother and younger sister out trick-or-treating. We went around our neighborhood . We went down one street and then up on the other side of the street back to our home.We were ghosts or cowboys or skeletons. We carried a white pillow case (later a standard Halloween bag) to get our treats. We went only to the houses that had their porch lights on. That was a sign that they were giving out candy to the kids. We arrived at the front door and shouted "Trick or Treat!" or "Help the poor my pants are tore"! They would open the door and tell us how cute we were. Kids and moms were walking along the sidewalk and up and down to every house that was lit. We also visited one house which was my mom's good friends. She gave us something special. We coldn't stay out too late because it got dark and it was better to get home early. Not because of ghosts but because of cars. When we got home we would empty our sacks on the living room floor to see what we got. Sometimes we traded. It was a special time for families and kids.

Another Sports Day Festival

I went to the Higashi Kindergarten in Okegawa last Saturday. It was raining all day. However that was not a problem. Why? Because they hold their event indoors. Yes! They are inside the SUN Arena in Okegawa. I was able to attend because I just happened to be free this Saturday afternoon. So, I taught English at my school till noon. I went to Shoya for lunch. Then I went to the Arena by car. I arrived at 1:15pm. They were on a lunch break at that time. But the activities started soon. First  there was a dance with moms and dads and the Nen-shos. Then there was a bean bag toss with the Nen-chus and parents. Then there was a Super Relay Race! They set up a track in the middle of the arena. There were four teams. One team was made up of the Kindergarten teachers! There were 10 young ladies and one guy. The other three teams were moms and mostly dads. Guess who won. The teachers did! Why? Because they had a secret weapon. It was the one guy teacher. His name is Ryousuke. He's a cool guy. And he is S-U-P-E-R fast! He ran twice in the race! So, they won easily. During the race, I counted five fathers who fell down while they were running. But, there were no injuries. Finally there was a Nen-Chu relay race. That was really exciting. I'm glad I went.

India by Kazuko Part 2

Meanwhile, many stray cows were lying and walking here and there in the streets. We had to watch our step when we walked the streets. But nobody paid attention to them or got angry with them, because the cow is a sacred animal in India. I felt that the religion has deep roots in India.
The population of India is 1,300,000,000. It's about 10times as large as Japan. More than 80% of the people are Hindu. In India, Hindi is the official language and the second official language is English. Our guide said that many people don't understand English except the people of the upper class. He also said that there are more than 800 kinds of languages in his country and it is very difficult to standardize them. India still has many old customs and there is a gap between the rich and the poor. But it will probably get better little by little.
I had a good time, though my stay was short. India was wonderful and mysterious. It was another world for me.

India by Kazuko Part 1

I visited India with my husband in September. I have wanted to see The Taj Mahal for long time. The Taj Mahal is a tomb which is made of marble. It was built in the 15 century by the emperor for his wife. If it was sunny, we might have seen the brilliant white building. Unfortunately, it was cloudy when we visited. However, the Taj Mahal was beautiful and amazing .I was very glad to actually see it!
The main purpose of my trip to India was to see the Taj Mahal. But there were a lot of interesting things that I couldn't imagine in India. How about you? What kind of image do you have of India? I thought that all Indian men wear a turban. But it was not so. I didn't see a lot of men with turbans. It was only the Sikhs. On the other hand, almost all women wore colorful national clothes. They are very elegant and beautiful.
The road was always terribly congested with cars and many drivers honked, so downtown was very noisy. We saw five people riding on a motorcycle. We saw many passengers riding on the roof of the bus. Anything goes! We were surprised by everything but it was just normal for them.

Sports Day Festival

I visited the Mida Kindergarten Sports Day Festival in Kounosu two Sundays ago. Actually, it was slated (scheduled) for the day before. That was October 14th. But because of (due to) rain in the forecast they changed it to the following day. That was Sunday, October 15th. At first I thought I was lucky because I was free October 14th, Saturday after 12 noon. I planned to go straight there after the last lesson at my school. But as they changed the date I had to rearrange my schedule. That was no big deal (problem). It was just a minor (small) inconvenience. So, I left home at 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning and drove to the school. The roads were a little crowded. But I arrived safely. I parked at the kindergarten and walked to the elementary school. I sat at the VIP table with the kindergarten manager. I watched the action from under a large canopy. It was a beautiful day so I walked around the ground taking pitcuers and greeting the kids. Everyone was very busy. But then it was lunch time. I got a small box lunch. It was interesting to see the activities before lunch as I usually go in the afternoon. All in all it was a pretty fun event.

"Eureka" Part 2

These kids are 5 and 6 year-olds. I have been practicing the ABC's and Numbers and Days and Months and Colors and simple conversation with them for over a year. So, my Eureka moment came suddenly. I told them to write their birth dates in their notebooks. Of course, they wrote it in Japanese. It was pretty cute. They used Hiragana only with the numbers. Their Japanese writing skills are very basic. And then I told them to write their birthdays in English below the Japanese. I also asked the teacher not to assist (help) them. I was curious (very interested) to see if they could do it. They did not understand my request. It was a simple request, so I am sure that my Japanese was accurate (correct). Then, I had the teacher tell them what I meant. They still didn't understand. But, we kept encouraging them. We repeated many times what we wanted. We told each kid individually too. We gave them hints. We told them to look at the Months Chart in the front of the room. We told hem to search their notebooks for the month. It took maybe 15 minutes but one girl finally got it. Two boys wrote "NINE" for September! Then two more kids got it. Three out of 25! The next class was only one kid. I was surprised that they did not make the connection between the Japanese month and the English month even though we practice it every lesson. That was very interesting.

"Eureka" Part 1

This was really awesome. I went to the Higashi Kindergarten to teach the oldest kids (Nen-Chous) there on Tuesday. There are 2 groups. There are 25 kids in each group. On this day I planned to practice the Months of the Year with them. That is, January, February, etc. I got my months chart from the K office. It has the months printed on it in two columns. January to June are on the left side and July to December are on the right side. Only the first letters are caps (A B C etc). The rest are smalls (a b c etc). At the beginning of every lesson I write the date and day on the board. Last Tuesday it was OCTOBER 17 TUESDAY. I always use caps only. Then the kids have to write that in their notebooks. These kids started doing that just one year ago. That was when they were Nen-Chus. I checked their notebooks. I found that the first time they wrote was last October. So, they should have every month written in their notebooks in Capitol letters. I checked again and sure enough (without a doubt) they were almost all there. There was no April nor May because I don't teach them due to spring holiday. It was then that I had a "Eureka moment". Continued tomorrow.

Angels Part 2

So, besides the monthly discounts, the angels gave me two more bonuses. One angel happened to look at my computer and said "That is No Good." I asked "What?" He said "Windows mail is obsolete. Microsoft no longer supports it. Hackers (devils) can cause you trouble in your computer." He then said I should use Outlook Express. Now, I tried to use it several years ago but gave up because it was too difficult for me to set up. I asked "Will you set it up for me?" He said "Sure. it's a piece of cake." Hallelujah!. "Go for it!" I said. Well, it took about 90 minutes. He had to get assistance from his head office. They entered my computer from the main office and a pro set it up. They finally finished and now it is easy to use. I could never have done it by myself. THEN, they sent another angel to come and remove one of the devices I no longer needed (saee pic). He came last Friday. When he was finished he said "Now you can use Wi-Fi. I said, "I don't know how to set it up. Will you do it for rme?" He said "Sure" and he did it in a jiffy.  Now my monthly fees are down, I use Outlook Express which has many good points, and I use Wi-Fi which is very convenient. Thank you, angels.

Angels Part 1

Do you see those two guys in the pic? They are angels. Do you know what angels are? My dictionary says: angel noun (definition 3.) informal used when you are talking to (about) somebody who you are grateful to. We are very grateful to those two guys. Why? Here is the story. On October 6th, out of the blue, a guy calls my school. He tells me that he is from a company called RADIX. He also says that he can save me money on my monthly e-mail bills. Then he says, this service won't cost me any money. I listened more closely. He wanted to come to my school and explain. I said OK. He and his partner came to my school the following Monday at 1PM. He explained many things. Basically they offer this service to introduce their company to everyone. He said he could reduce my monthly bills on my e-mail service by 10% and perhaps more. He also said that it would cost me 2,000en. It was  a small price to pay I thought. I believed him and was ready to say OK, BUT!!! I decided it was best to call Miwako and get her opinion. She talked to the guy by phone and was skeptical (doubtful). But, she finally agreed. Great! I will tell you more about the angles tomorrow.

Friday the13th

From Wikipedia:
Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day in Western superstition. It occurs when the 13th day of the month falls on a Friday. This occurs (happens) at least once every year, and up to three times a year. In 2017, it occurs twice, on January 13 and October 13. There will be two Friday the 13ths per year until 2020, where 2021 and 2022 will have just one occurrence.
1. In Spanish-speaking countriess, instead of Friday, Tuesday the 13th is considered a day of bad luck.
2. The Greeks also consider Tuesday (and especially the 13th) an unlucky day.
3. In Italian popular culture, Friday the 17th (and not the 13th) is considered a day of bad luck.
4. In the US, According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute an estimated 17 to 21 million people in the United States are affected by a fear of this day.
That makes it the most feared day and date in history.
Some people are so paralyzed by fear that they avoid their normal routines in doing business or taking flights
Some people do not even get or even out of bed.
It's been estimated that $800 or $900 million is lost in business on this day.
Another popular superstition is a black cat. How do you feel about "bad luck"?

Miwako's band pratcice

I blogged about my trip to Hikawa shrine and Omiya park last week. The reason I was able to go there was thanks to M's music practice. She is a member of a Big Band group. Here is Miwako's story.
I started to practice the piano when I was 5 years old. But I quit the lesson at 11 years old because I had to go to Juku. When I was in high school I really wanted to start and take lessons again from a new teacher. It was very hard to move my fingers because I didn't play for 4 years. My teacher started to teach me how to play it with beginner’s  text and I brushed up.  I was getting better little by little. A few years later I had to make decision: Study English or the Piano? My Piano teacher recommended me to become a piano teacher, of course. I belonged to the ESS Club at High School so I was very interested in English too at that time. I was thinking and thinking, then finally I took the English path. So that is the way to meet Nice Guy Rick later and establish RAM English together to the present! I was hoping to start playing the piano again someday for a long time since we got married.
After we moved to Ageo I bought a used piano. I started to play the piano again. Now I take JAZZ Piano lessons and joined a Big Band. These are my hobbies now. It is enjoyable to play with other players for programs of jazz music. I like jazz music as well as classical music – listening, singing, playing, Now I’m happy to enjoy both our business and enjoy music! I would like to continue music as long as possible. I think I’m lucky.

Gardening

We have a small garden. We also have a narrow stretch of land which runs around our house on three sides. The front side faces the east. That has a small raised garden. Well, I had been neglecting my responsibility. I had been putting off (delaying) working in the garden. So, finally two Sundays ago I was outside at 7:30AM and got to work. I put on my gardening uniform. I got my tools and goods from the storage bin. The garden in the back of the house and the north side is vary narrow. In the back, I sometimes lean over the fence from the road in order to pick the weeds. There is also one very narrow place I have to get into to pull weeds and clean up. It is a narrow square space and it has a tree in it! The north side is also narrow. I bought some special goods to work here. They are knee protectors. They are hard plastic knee pads. They have two straps each, and I tighten them so they stay in place. That is, so they do not fall below the knee. There are many stones in our garden. I put them there when we moved in. In this narrow space I have to kneel in order to pick the weeds. So, the knee pads are a necessity. That means that they are very important. Now the garden is very clean. Awesome!

Columbus Day

Monday, October 9th was a holiday in the USA and many other places around the world. It was Columbus Day. Here are some awesome facts about Christopher Columbus and Columbus Day.
1.Columbus Day is an observation of the anniversary of the explorer's arrival on an island in what is now the Bahamas on October 12, 1492.
2. Columbus, an Italian explorer, first spotted land on October 12th, 1492 in the new World after a nearly 10-week voyage from Spain.
3. The following day his crew of 90 set foot in the Bahamas on what is now known as Watling Island.
4. Columbus named the island (called GUANAHANI by the natives) San Salvador.
5. In 1792, The Colombian Order in the US held the first celebration of Columbus Day on October 12th.
6. Franklin D. Roosevelt designated Oct. 12 as a national holiday in 1934.
7. On 1971, the date was changed from October 12th to the second Monday in October.

Omiya Park

I then took a walk in Omiya Park. Many more memories greeted me. I bought a soft cream. The old lady here did her best to speak English. I sat down on a bench and enjoyed the soft cream. It's rare that I sit down and relax. The park was quiet. There were not many people and even less crows. The crows in Omiya park say "Ah. Ah" There is a pond. I have rowed one of the boats they rent out there more than once on that pond. I even did cherry blossom viewing here once or twice. There were lots of people then. I had a lesson very near here, too, so I had lunch in this park. I also did some plum blossom viewing here way back when. I headed to the zoo. It has changed. I remember they had  a black bear there long ago. I also recalled the time that I came by bicycle with my kids. One of my daughters lost her bike key. We searched for 15 minutes or so. We finally called M to come by car (we had a one box car then). I loaded her bicycle in the car and then went home. I returned home by bike later. Nice memories here. My walk in the park was not awesome. It was certainly not awful either. It was average. I'm glad I took the time to do it.

HiKawa Shrine

One day, after I dropped Miwako off at her piano lesson, I was as free a a bird AND I had the car. There is free parking on Sunday along the road leading to Omiya station. M usually parks there. I planned to do that but I had an hour to kill (wait). So, I took a drive. Where did I go? I went to the HiKawa Shrine and park. I considered (thought about) walking but I'm no spring chicken and my knees said "No way, Jose'". It took about 15 minutes though. That is because I used the SanDou. It was crowded. But I arrived safely. I must say this place brought back memories. For one, our children were blessed here.  I went first to pay my respects at the altar. The yard is very clean and tidy. The trees are fantastic. I saw more than a couple people leaning and pushing the tree. I don't know why but I tried it on my way out. The tree didn't budge (move at all). I have been here on New Year Day several times when we lived in Omiya. I came here once on New Year's Eve by myself. Our family also visited here for New Years 5, 6, 7 times. I can see the Chrysanthemums that adorn the inner yard in spring. I even brought my mother here when she visited so long ago. Sigh.

My October

It is difficult to plan everything for the month. But in general, I will be working hard to finish the You Tube project. Then I can get back to writing my books. I want to write two. One is in English and the other is in Japanese. Of course, they both are about English. This month I will continue my diet. I had a lot of free time in the summer. I did a lot of work, but I also drank. So, it has been difficult to lose weight. That is because I drink a lot of alcohol when I do drink. I tried to quit alcohol altogether (completely) this year but I failed. It only lasted three months. So, I will continue going to the gym twice a week. I buy a monthly pass there. It costs 1,600yen. I can use the gym for one hour each time. That is enough for me. My Saturday KenKatsu lessons will resume from October 14th. I have this coming Saturday, the 7th, free. M and I are planning a one day trip to Nikko. I will donate blood some time this month. It has been thee months since my last donation. I have been keeping an eye on (watching regularly) the vacant lot next door. I will  have to get out there once more this month and do some work. And, then, there is Halloween.
