Marine Day Challenge by Kazuko

  1. I challenged to take part in the English drama on stage because it was a good chance.
  2. Satomi, Yuta and Kabi planned and led us all so I felt confident.
  3. Many classmates joined in, and I had the feeling "There is safety in numbers".
  4. We started to practice singing from May and each group read lines (scripts) together from June.
  5. At the event on Marine day everything went well and ended without incident (safely).
  6. I had a sense of achievement and was pleased at the collaboration of our team.
  7. I had a sense of accomplishment, but on stage I couldn't listen to the chorus because I played with my back to  them.
  8. And the songs were out of sync by the right and the left side because I was absorbed in singing the alto part. I regret that.
  9. Then I was embarrassed as I played the piano too loudly because I was getting nervous and excited.
  10. The next time, I plan to watch and listen around me.
  11. This event was fun for and a chance to study hard and put our English to use. Thanks to Rick.
  12. I took a video of the entire event. I want to keep a record to study.
  13. After editing the video. I will present one to Rick and those who want one. Just let me know.

Ducks were walking early Morning by Kazuhiko

early in the morning I take a walk near my house.
there is  a little river. It is called "moto-arakawa".
rice field covered with green.
blue sky without a cloud.
this is a place we can see everywhere.
as I came back home Tuesday I by chance met five pretty ducks on the road.
a big duck walked at the head...maybe their teacher.
others come along with boss...maybe duck students.
in front of me they go across the road and enter a green field.
they were walking well-behaved.
I was pleased with their pretty good behavior.
an early morning walk can be better than you think.

Swimming in the Sea of Japan

I had  a mission. I had  a goal. It was to swim in the sea (ocean). I try to do that every year as a policy. I missed out on it maybe three years ago. I believe a dip on the ocean is healthy. I believe it is medicinal. That means that it is akin to (similar to) taking medicine. But it is so natural. Anyway we left the hotel about 9:30AM. M checked the route on her phone. We had two choices. I drove and decided to take the mountain roads instead of the highway. Why? Because it is much more fun,  that's why. It was overcast (cloudy) when we left and it did rain off and on. But, there was very little traffic and I did drive carefully. So, all went well. We arrived in Kashiazaki around 11:30 and started searching for a beach. It took a while but we located (found) the same one I went to several years earlier (before). It was cloudy and there were only 6 people there. There were two life guards! M waited in the car and I swam and dove and played in the waves for about 15 minutes. The air was warm, not hot, and the water was warm, too. I finally got out and rinsed off at an outdoor shower. Parking was free. The shower was free. I got my medicine. Mission Accomplished!

A small vacation

My Monday lessons start at 5PM in the summer. I am free from 4:46PM Saturday till 4:49 Monday. That's about 48 hours and just enough  time for a quick vacation. M and I made reservations at the  Angel Grandia resort mansion in Yuuzawa, Niigata. The place is a ski resort. However, it becomes a giant play room for families with small kids in the summer. I drove there. It was 165 kilometers with hardly any traffic. I used the cruise control (which also has auto braking) the first 150 kilometers. Then suddenly, just before our destination, a huge rainfall hit us. I could barely see in front of me. I had to drive very carefully then. But, other than that, no worries all trip. There were 900 guests at the hotel on Saturday and then 1100 on Sunday. They provide special tours and events for the kids. There are two restaurants. One is a smorgasbord (all you can eat) style and at the other you order from a menu. We dined there. There were only 8 customers there. The next day we made a trip to Kashiwazaki. (I'll tell about that tomorrow.). We checked out of the hotel Monday at 9:30AM and arrived back home safe and sound  at 11:45. Thank you Miwako. (The pic is from our drive to Kashiwazaki.)

On stage Part 3

And finally, let me tell you about the musical performances. The biggest event was the John Denver song "Country Roads". The Saturday Kenkastsu group put it together. There are 22 students in that group and all of them (all 22 member) took part in the skits on stage and finally the song. Two ladies played the guitar, one played the piano and they let me (allowed me to) play my violin. It was good fun! Also, Miwako played the piano while I played the violin. We did two numbers (songs). Kenny played a couple of songs on his flute and then he and I played one number together. We practiced that twice at my school. Then Yuko and I played "Largo" on our violins. She made a recording for me and I practiced with it at my school. I think that was the best I did. Miwako also played a solo number on the piano. It was from her jazz lesson. Finally Yuko and her friend, Eriko, played a long piece of music together. They both played their violins. The event finished at just 4PM. Rick and Miwako enjoyed this event very much. Again, thank you everyone for joining our event.

On stage Part 2

We also had groups perform. The largest group was 20 adults. They are all from the same class that I teach at the KenKatsu on Saturdays. They were very busy on stage. They did separate skits. There were skits performed by three different people each time. One was about shopping, one was about asking for directions, one was about travelling and one was about...I forgot. Then they all got on stage and entered a bar or drinking establishment, There was a pianist playing. They all ordered drinks and then we all sang "Country Roads". There were 2 guitars, the piano and my violin. Another group did a skit titled "Dream Comes True". They are Charlie's students on Wednesdays. Two more of my students did a "manzai/rakugo" skit. They were funny!. Three people did a quiz with the audience. I think that was the first time for that. It went very well. They had 4 "winners". They gave them all a prize. Finally one gent gave a lecture about wind instruments. He wore a funny costume but his lecture was very serious and informative. He also played the flute at the end. I will tell about the music performances tomorrow in the final part of this story.

On stage Part 1

I made a schedule for the RAM Event. I tried to imagine how long each performance would take. I based that on past experience. But I really didn't know. My guess was that we would end at 4PM. But, we did have until 4:45 to use the hall. The first part of he day as the solo and kid performances. The first little boy introduced himself. The second two kids performed with one father. Why? Because one kid cancelled. So, the papa was a "pinch-hitter". He, his daughter and another little girl did admirably (very, very good). Next, two 10 year-olds did their self-intros and then read from a text. Two adults followed one after the other. (That means in order/ not together/ separately) were on stage. They are older guys. They are older than me (than I am) by about 10 yeas or so. They both told stories. The first guy told a story of how he met a young Indian man in Asakusa. He explained about how the pagoda there. The next gent told about his travels around Japan, especially about Hokkaido. Of course they recited from memory. That means that they didn't use any notes. As I corrected their stories, I knew the contents. They both recited perfectly!  was impressed by all of these performers.

RAM Big Event

Rick And Miwako (RAM) held the RAM Big Event yesterday, July 17th. It was a holiday here in Japan called Marine Day. I estimate 70 or 80 people came. Almost all of them were on stage at one time or another. It was a lot of fun! M and I arrived at the KenKatsu Center in Inamachi at 9AM. It is the 3rd time that we have rented the Hall for our event. We had rehearsals from 9AM to 12:30PM. Showtime was at 1PM. Then we had five kids from our school on stage. They did self-introductions and some read from a text. There were two adult students forom the Seibu Fun English group. They did recitals. Two ladies did a Manzai/Rakugo skit. Three people did a quiz with the audience. One group of 20 students did a gala performance on stage with skits and singing. Another group did a skit and singing. We also had music performances. Miwako played a piano solo. She and I did a duet with my violin and her piano. I payed the violin with one gent who played his flute. He also gave the audience a lecture on musical instruments. I played the violin with another student and her violin. Two ladies played their violins. They also had a quiz for the audience. I will tell more about this event this week. Thanks to all who participated and came to the event.

Welcomed rain

Do you remember how it rained last Tuesday? I do not know the details but I know it rained a lot. And with that rain two interesting things happened at my school. First, several unwanted "life" appeared. You can see one in the photo. Yes. That is a frog. He was stuck to my window. The time was about 7:30pm during my adult class. He was cool though. The next morning there were two more creatures. One was long with a lot of legs but not so big. Another had a hard back. He moved slowly. I chased these things outside. Finally Wednesday night a cockroach appeared. It was the first one this year. There were two students in the class. The boy noticed. I chased the roach outside with my hand along the floor. He didn't come back. The second happening was rainy that Tuesday night. Because of all the rain only one student came at 8pm. But, he didn't come till 8:30. I was alone until he came so I was working on one of my kids HW projects. I had a PC problem. I asked him if he knew how to solve the problem. He said, "Try this". I tried it. It worked! One problem solved thanks to the rain.

Thanks Kenny

We are gearing up (getting ready) for the RAM BIG Event 2017 at Kenkatsu Center this coming Monday. In case you didn't know, that day is a holiday here in Japan. It is Marine Day. We reserved the Hall in the AM and PM. We will have maybe 50 or 60 students on stage for this gala event. There will be music with singing and dancing and piano, flutes, violins, guitars, etc. There will be some young kids doing self-intro and reading some text. The adult students will do some skits, music and even a stand-up comedy routine. (In Japanese you say MANZAI.) Of course, I want to play my violin on stage. I have been practicing now just six years. I do practice hard. I also have a very good teacher. And I have students and of course the lovely Miwako to partner with. This time I will partner with another lovely student. His name is Kenny (see pic). He plays the flute and saxophone and other wind instruments. He will also give us a very interesting lecture this day. Anyway he was kind enough to travel in some terrible heat to my school twice and practice with me. We will play "Where have all the Flowers Gone" written by Pete Seeger. Wish us luck.

A trip to England by Shogo Part 2

Second day in Sheffield

We had an appointment to visit UK Company on the second day. We had no choice but to leave my wife at the Hotel and go to the UK Company. The next morning, my son and I headed to Sheffield by train. The Company is near Manchester where a terror attack happened a week ago. After arriving at Sheffield station, we caught a taxi and went to the UK Company. They warmly welcomed us although we arrived at the UK Company one and half hours behind schedule. We had a business meeting and then they showed us around the factory. After a tour of the factory, we canceled the Hotel in Sheffield and went back to the Hotel in London immediately. Unfortunately, we had to give up a plan to stay in Sheffield that night and also to have a trip to Liverpool and Chester next day.

3rd and 4th day in London

My wife was recovering from her illness little by little, so we went sightseeing in London city. We got on board a narrow boat and enjoyed the sightseeing of London. After the boat ride, we went to an art museum. We also went to several famous places such as Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace where Princess Dina lived before.

5th day in Cotswolds’

We took part in the Cotswolds’ one day tour. It was the third times for us to visit this town. I love this town and I wish I could live there someday in the future. The scenery here makes me feel as if I were backed in the old Era. We enjoyed the wonderful time in Cotswolds’ all day long.

There were some troubles for in England for a week. Fortunately, my wife has gotten better day by day since returning to Japan. This was the first time to travel to a foreign country for my son, and he had a fruitful week. I really enjoyed the wonderful week with my wife and son in England this year.

A trip to England by Shogo Part 1

Trip to England

I went to England with my wife and son from the 30th May to the 6th June. We left Haneda for London at 11:30 AM on May 30th . We arrived in London at 2:00 PM of the same day. Fortunately, we were admitted to the country without incident although there was a terror attack in Manchester a week earlier. After immigration, we went to the Hotel by underground. We had an early supper of sandwich and juice that we bought near the Hotel. We went to bed earlier than usual.

First day in London

We went to Abbey Road Studio and Sherlock Homes Museum by underground. Next, we went to the Tower Hill Station by underground. We took a walk along the River Thames, and then we went to several famous places such as Tower of London, Tower Bridge, London Eye, the Westminster Bridge, Big Ben, House of Parliament and Westminster Abbey.
After our walk, we had lunch at a restaurant in Borough Market near the London Bridge. It was the place where a terror attack happened two days previous. Suddenly, on the way to the Westminster Abbey, my wife suffered a severe stomachache. We caught a taxi and went back to the Hotel immediately. I called a doctor and asked him to come and see her as soon as possible. The doctor came an hour later. He saw her and told us that she got food poisoning or something like that, and it takes five days or so to recover from her illness. We had a plan to have dinner near the Hotel that night, but of course, we did not.

My mysterious experience Part 2 by Misao

That operation on my left eye was two weeks later. I had two kinds of disease in this eye so I was hospitalized for five days. One operation was the same as the right eye's. The other operation was peeling membranes off the back of the eyeball. Each operation was performed on opened eyes under local anesthesia. During this operation I had a mysterious experience.
1. I felt as if I were in water and looked up at he surface of the water and the sky. What I first saw under the glare of the spot lights were three white circles. Gradually they turned into different moving shapes and colors. And then some prismatic lights appeared and the rainbow arched into my eye. It was a fantastic view. I wondered what this fantastic view above could be.
2. Next, I saw the membranes in the eyeball were picked up and peeled off with tweezers and those membranes were floating in my eye. My eyeball filled with a kind of liquid. The operation was finished soon.
3. will never forget this mysterious experience and that fantastic view.

My mysterious experience Part 1 by Misao

I had an operation on my eyes twice in May. First I was hospitalized for three days because I had an operation on my right eye's cataracts. The doctor removed the cloudy crystalline lens in my eye and replaced it with an artificial lens. After the operation the eye was covered with a very large bandage. The next morning as soon as the doctor removed the bandage I could see clearly and bright. I looked into the mirror cautiously. I could see my face (eyebrows, eyes) in the mirror clearly without glasses! I was so glad and said "Hello" into the mirror without thinking. I also saw many lines and spots on my face quite clearly. I was shocked! However this was my real self. But, I was happy. I can read the newspaper and books without glasses. And with that I looked forward to the next operation.  Continued tomorrow.

Trip to Ishigaki Island by AT

Trip to Ishigaki Island
My wife and I went to Ishigaki Island in Okinawa Pref. for sightseeing from Apr.9 to Apr.12 at private tour, not group.
It takes about three hours from Tokyo to Ishigaki Island by airplane.
Ishigaki Island is located at a distance of about 300 kilometers from Taiwan.
It is in the center of Yaeyama islands and its harbor is a hub to the other islands.
Yaeyama islands consist of Ishigaki, Iriomote, Taketomi, Kuro, Kohama, Yuhu, Hateruma, etc.
We did not have a detailed plan this time. We decided ourselves where we will go on Ishigaki island . Our itinerary was as follows.
First day: Went around Ishigaki Island by rental car.
Second day: Went to Kuro Island.
Third day: Went to Taketomi Island.
Let me explain about second and third day.
[Second Day]
It took 30 minutes to Kuro Island by ship. We went around the island by
bicycle. There are many, many cows here; much more than the human population, so it smelled of cow dung in places. And it is called Heart Inland as the island is shaped like a heart. We heard there was no traffic signal and policeman there. We enjoyed clear sea and calm weather.
[Third Day]
It took 15 minutes to Taketomi Island by ship. We took the glass bottom boat to see the inside of the sea. We saw the coral and colorful fishes. The guide said that the coral was decreasing (dying) year by year.
And we rode on water buffalo cart to see the streets. We felt the water buffalo was very obedient and well trained.
This time it was very hot in April, but we were blessed with good weather.
We had a nice trip.

Independence Day USA

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more. It's America's birthday today.
John Adams, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, wrote those words to his wife, Abigail. Actually, they all signed it on July 2nd, but they made some changes and announced it July 4th.Today, as John Adams predicted, Independence Day has fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies,   Independence Day is the National Day of the United States.
Finally, here is an easy way to remember my country's birth date. America was born in 1776, right? So, if you remember that Mt Fuji is 3776 meters high you will always remember 1776. Gottit?
Happy Birthday, USA!

HOME PROJECT for July 2017:

今月は、sometimes 時々、rarely めったに~ない、always いつも、
never 決して~しない、 seldom めったに~ない、などの副詞についてです。
これらの単語は、主語の後で動詞の前に位置するのが、ふつうです。
1. I always walk to school. 私はいつも徒歩で通学します。
2. We seldom see her these days. 我々は、彼女にめったに会わないです。
3. They sometimes go fishing. 彼らは時々釣りに行きます。
他にも、 occasionally 時々、 scarcely ほとんど~ない、 almost never ほとんど~ない 、almost always たいてい(いつでも)、などといった単語もあります。
また、副詞的なフレーズとして、once in a while たまには、 on occasion 折にふれて、
once in a blue moon ごくまれに、めったに~ない、などもあります。
これら色々な単語や熟語を使って会話の中でも実践してみましょう!
