John Wayne

Do you know who John Wayne is? Let me tell you a little about him. Last Sunday I got up slowly and parked in front of the TV. I watched a movie called "Stagecoach". It was made in 1939. It stars John Wayne. He was really young and the movie was in black and white. It was set in the western United States. Yes, it was a Western movie! John Wayne was born May 26, 1907. His real name is Marion Robert Morrison. He is also known as "Duke". In this movie he plays "Ringo". But some people in the movie called him "The Kid". The movie had no computer graphics. 50% was shot on the stage coach. But the stage coach was not real many times. The action was filmed inside a studio. However, the scenery shot outdoors, brought back many memories to me. It was the Monument Valley in Nevada-Utah, USA. I visited there long, long ago with my friend, "John Wayne." Anyway, this movie helped make Duke a famous actor. Wikipedia said that he had a football scholarship to the University of Southern California. But he lost that when he had a body surfing accident. Perhaps  he was lucky!

Being Interviewed by Kuma

Being interviewed by KUMA

My wife and I went cherry blossom viewing at Tokyo Asukayama Park. The cherry blossoms were mostly scattered.
My wife is a member of the Asukayama mandolin club. That day she had her mandolin as she was going to practice after our cherry blossom viewing. I planned to go to Ueno Park to interview some foreigners.
Suddenly three ladies approached us and we happened to receive an interview. It was a club activity by one Italian and two Japanese students.

(Italian)Excuse me. May I interview you ? mixed in English and Japanese. I’m・・. May I ask what
is in this case ?
(Wife) My mandolin is inside.
(I) Wow! Although the mandolin is an instrument born in Italy, I have never seen one before.
Would you please play some songs ?
(W) Sure………Sakura Sakura…..
(I) Wonderful ! nice weather, cherry blossoms, and beautiful sounds of mandolin. So happy.
(W) I chose this song because I thought it’s perfect for the occasion.
(I) When did you begin playing?
(W) When I was twenty years old.
(I) I see. What good points are there doing the mandolin ?
(W) I made many friends both domestically and abroad.
(I) Do you play in a foreign country ?
(W) In Singapore, I was in the club.
(I) Wonderful!  May I play your mandolin ?
(W) Of course you may. If you hum and move your fingers over the mandolin, you will be
    able to play.
(I) Is the number of people playing mandolin increasing or decreasing ?
(W) Absolutely it’s decreasing.
(I) Do you have anything to say to young people ?
(W) Young people enjoy the music of young people, I think.
(I) Finally is there anything you have learned while doing music ?
(W) Although I am not good at English, the sheet music is universal. Doremi is also Doremi. So I have not thought of the inconvenience. I learned that music has no borders.Even today, we got a talk with you thanks to a small mandolin.
(I) Thanks so much.
(W) Sure.
(I) Today’s story will be posted on facebook.
(W) No problem.
(I) It was nice meeting you.
(W) It was nice meeting you, too.
(KUMA) We were interviewed.

Memorial Day Weekend

We have a special (unique) holiday in the USA called Memorial Day. It will be observed (celebrated) next Monday. Therefore, the Memorial Day weekend starts tomorrow. Wikipedia says:
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States. It remembers the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces (military). The holiday is observed every year on the last Monday of May. It originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868. At first it was established as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers. By the 20th century Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. It marks the start of the unofficial summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.
I remember (vaguely) how we enjoyed the weekend was I was young. As a kid, it was mostly riding our bike here and there and playing  a lot of baseball. Then in Junior HS and High School it was going to the lakes for fishing  and swimming. Those were the days, my friend.

Woodpecker

I used to be a bird-watcher. That is, I used to go bird watching. I did that for about  5 or 6 years. I bought some expensive binoculars at BIC Camera. Fortunately I got a 30% discount. They were excellent. The magnification was 10. Bird watchers usually use a magnification of 8. That makes the field of vision (the area that you can see) wider. 10 makes it smaller but the image (i.e. the bird) is larger. I have seen many kinds of birds. They are all unique and very beautiful and very interesting. My neighbor who lives across the road from us. He has a nice garden and a tree. This year a Kogera (small woodpecker) moved in. She made a hole in the tree branch and now her young chicks live there. I am pretty sure (confident) that I heard them chirping the other  day. I have seen the momma several times. Naturally she has a unique song that she sings. Seeing her brought back memories of my bird watching days. I'm pretty lucky to live in this wilderness part of Ageo.

Rice fields

I'm sure that you are all aware it is time to plant the rice. I have several students and friends who actually plant their own rice. Of course I do not plant  rice. I do not have a rice field. I only have a small garden and the vacant lot next door to take care of. But, there are many rice fields in our neck of the woods (in our area). I really enjoy following the process of rice growing. First they remove weeds. Then they level the fields with their tractors. Then they turn on the water and let it flow. At this time the frogs come out of hibernation and start serenading. (I really enjoy riding my bicycle along the paths home. The frogs become silent and wait for me to pass. They resume their croaking as soon as I have gone.) After that, the rice seedlings are planted. At this time the reflections of the sky and trees and houses on the water appear. They look like paintings. Once the seeds will grow, the dragonflies appear. This may just be (Perhaps this is) my favorite season in Japan.

Massage

I get a massage every month. I have been getting massages from the same gentleman (see pic) for about 7 years. Originally I had terrible pains in my left shoulder and in my lower back. It was very difficult to get in and out of the car. One day a student told me that her husband gives massages. They live near my house. He would bring his massage table to my school and he massaged here. But over time we decided that I should go to his house and get the massage. Last year I asked him to give my friend John a massage during his visit to Japan. When I got my hernia this March I certainly couldn't get a massage. I could hardly walk!  But now, my hernia has healed. So, I really want to go the gym. But, before I can do that I wanted to get a massage to see (check) if I had a special pains. I called last Wednesday to schedule (make) an appointment and I went last Friday. He was a little surprised as he knew I had had a hernia recently. But I assured him  that all was well. He gave me the usual excellent massage. Ahhhhhhhhhhh. There were no problems. GYM: Here I come!

House work

Oops! On my way home from Sano last Sunday I made a wrong turn. It was on the highway. I went to Satte instead of Okegawa. I must say the junction appeared rather quickly on the long turn. Anyway, I got home without incident (safely) after that and had lunch. M had piano practice and then some other errands so I was home alone. What to do? Well, I finally washed the floor in our foyer. I then washed the porch outside the front door. While that was drying, I went to the back of the house with my shovel. I dug up some huge flower roots. Then I went to my favorite weeding place next door. I got my hoe (I actually have one) and chopped off the heads of all the weeds that I didn't already pick. They are a special kind and are hard to pick. I raked those into mounds. I then decided to trim the two trees in front of the house. Trimming them was kind of (rather) fun. I created my own style. Picking up all the cut leaves and branches was a lot of work though. I then cleaned all my tools and put everything away and back in order. Then I .... drank.

Last Sunday

I have been wanting to buy some slacks for a while. The best place for me to buy them is at Brooks Bothers at the Sano outlet shopping mall in Sano, Tochigi. They have my size. I decided to go by car. How come? Because it takes only about 45 minutes, thanks to the new KenOuDo highway. I knew exactly what I wanted so it wasn't necessary to bring Miwako. I left around 9Am and got there just before opening, which is at 10AM. I decided one pair almost immediately. It then took about 15 minutes to choose the there one. Both were half price and then a further 10% off because I bought two. I was done by 10:30. BUT!!! I then had to get the pant legs tailored. The nice lady at the shop pinned them up and then I had to take them to the tailoring place. The bad news was that even though I was there early It still took 60 minutes. I am not sure why. The good news they only charged 1,200en for the two. That was good because I only had 2,000en cash. So I had one hour to kill. I sat on a bench and watched the people and dogs go by. I must say, all those people are very fashionable. They all looked like the came out of a magazine!

Jazz band

My lovely wife, Miwako, plays the piano. She practiced when she was a young kid and then took some time off when she entered high school. She then started up again when she entered university. She told me that she considered becoming a piano teacher. Her other dream was to become expert at English. Luckily for me, she chose the latter. She thought about getting a piano when we lived in our mansion after we got married. But, I said NO because the place was too small. But in our current house there is just enough room for one upright piano. She purchased a used one four years ago. She really practiced a lot and started taking jazz piano lessons two years ago. Then she started Big Band for jazz piano lessons last year. She had her debut with the Big Band on May 7th at the end of Golden Week. It was at the Omiya ward office in Saitama City. I must tell you that she practiced long and hard. She practiced an hour or more almost every day. And the results were excellent. Her sister, niece and her baby came. It was outdoor. The weather  was cool and the band was cooler! Keep on playin', Miwako!

Naotora NHK by Kazukko

My husband and l went to Hamanako to spend time with my daughter's family who came from Kobe last week. We promised to meet up with them at the hotel. My husband and l thought that it was boring to go straight there, so we decided to make a detour.
Now, have you seen the historical TV drama "Naotora"of NHK? The story is that Ii Naotora , who is the heroine, struggles to keep her territories as a lord. It is set in the area around Hamanako. There are many sightseeing spots about the drama. My husband loves the drama and wanted to go there. We left home early in the morning and got on the Shinkansen from Tokyo May 5. We got off at Kakegawa station one stop before Hamamatsu station and changed to the Tenhama line. Tenhama line is the local railway running in the country side. A peaceful country scene spread out as far as I could see. It was like a scene from a movie. We got off at Kiga station and visited several places. It was crowded everywhere, but we enjoyed ourselves. After that we headed to the hotel and joined our grandchildren. Needless to say, we had a wonderful time with them. What sweet memories.

Golden Week Waxing

We have wooden floors in our house. We decided that we must protect them. That means that we must wax them. How come? What does waxing do? There are two reasons. Reason #1 I believe that the floors get dry. I also believe that when that happens, the floors may become squeaky. They may also become weak. Reason #2 Waxing makes them shiny. So, I got my trusty waxing materials out of the closet and got to work. We waxed every room except one. Here is how we did it. First we move all the furniture to one side of the room. Then we wash the floor with a special cleaner. When that dries we then wash that area of floor again with water to remove the cleaner. Then when that dries, we apply the wax slowly and deliberately. It shines so beautifully. When that dries we move all the furniture to that area. Then we repeat the process. We did  two upstairs rooms, the hall upstairs, the stairway, the hall downstairs, the kitchen, the dining room and finally the living room. It took four days and maybe ten hours total. We will do it again next GW. Whew!

Golden Week Alcohol

I started 2017 on the wagon. That means no drinking alcohol. It went well until April. I didn't drink for 100 days or so. M and I went out for drinks several times and I was the driver, because I wasn't drinking. One goal of not drinking was to lose weight. But, even though I wasn't imbibing, I lost only 2.5 kg. It was a big disappointment. So, mid-April I decided enough was enough. I might as well drink. I opened up things by going to Futaba in Okegawa. The server there said "I'm glad to see you drinking again." Then we went to a new place Kushihide in Okegawa. Actually it is an old place but they refurbished it, inside and out. Then we visited Shoya in Okegawa. Our daughter used to work there so were got plenty of smiles from the staff. I also enjoyed several night nights of drinking at home and even one night in the driveway admiring the weed-free vacant lot next door. On top of that I started drinking at noon when I was in Atami. The bad news? I have gained 2 kilos back. So, I am working hard on my diet. But, that alcohol certainly is delicious and pleasurable!

Golden Week Atami

We used a different plan for our Atami trip this time. Of course, we went to the Angel Resort. But we went separately because our schedules conflicted (didn't meet/coincide). We paid for two night each person but I only stayed one night. How come? Let me explain the reason. M went Monday after doing housework and then visited her mom in hospital. I taught until 9 PM Monday night. The next morning I caught (got/rode) the first train leaving Okegawa station. It was 5:35AM. That took me to Odawara. I changed trains to Atami. It took 3 hours total. I walked down to the hill and had breakfast at Johnathon's (see pic). After b-fast, I then waked down to the beach and got my feet wet there. M came to pick me up by car and we got to the Resort in 10 minutes. Check in time is 3PM. So I could enjoy the place an extra 5 hours, from 10AM to 3PM. That is why I paid for a Monday check in. Do you follow me? We then enjoyed relaxing in the huge lobby and Karaoke and the sea and the ocean breeze and the bath and and massage chair and imbibing.

Golden Week Weeding

That certainly was a GOLDEN Week! First let me tell about the vacant lot next door. The weeds appeared at the end of February. It was still too cold to pick them. I decided to wait until the weather got warmer. It did get warmer but my "back went out." That happened when I got a hernia. I was laid up (in bed/recuperating) for over one month. I couldn't do any weeding at all. I finally got well enough to go out and weed. That was early April. I made a schedule. It usually takes 90 minutes to 2 hours to weed. These weeds were interesting. They had very long "arms". They stayed near the ground. I used my trusty sickle and pulled them up by the roots. And then I rolled them up into a ball. I then put them in the trash bags. It took seven or eight times. I am sure I filled twenty bags or more. I finally got them all and then sprayed weed killer over the whole (entire) lot. I also bought a new type of weed killer. I have to spread it by hand. I will apply it after the rains this week. Then I hope the weeds will give up. We shall see.

Children's Day

Almost all my housework is done. What shall we do?
Children’s Day is a very popular festival for children in Japan. Although now called Children’s Day, it was formerly known as Boys’ Day. For children it is a celebration day, giant Koinobori (carp kites) are flown all over Japan, the display for Kodomo no Hi (Children’s Day) is set up in their homes and they receive money. To top it all off, it is a national holiday and students get the day off school as well.
Why is the carp chosen as the symbol for Children’s Day and the kite? The carp is one of the fish which swims upstream, even jumping over small waterfalls. Parents wish for their children to be strong and determined like the carp.

Constitution Day

Constitution is the system of fundamental principles by which a nation, state, corporation or the like is governed (ruled). Constitutions explain or define the way the country, etc is run. I checked the Japanese Constitution on line. There are 11 Chapters and 103 Articles. Here are a few.
Article 1. The Emperor shall be the symbol of the State and of the unity of the People, deriving his position from the will of the people with whom resides sovereign power.
Article 19. Freedom of thought and conscience shall not be violated.
Article 23. Academic freedom is guaranteed.
Article 30. The people shall be liable to taxation as provided by law.
Article 42. The Diet shall consist of two Houses, namely the House of Representatives and the House of Councilors.
Article 81. The Supreme Court is the court of last resort with power to determine the constitutionality of any law, order, regulation or official act.
Article 88. All property of the Imperial Household shall belong to the State. All expenses of the Imperial Household shall be appropriated by the Diet in the budget.
Article 91. At regular intervals and at least annually the Cabinet shall report to the Diet and the people on the state of national finances.
Have you ever read it?

Showa no Hi

Last Saturday was a holiday in Japan. However I taught my usual Saturday schedule. After that, M and I went to Shoya to eat, drink and relax. This week Golden Week. I have already weeded the field next door and sprayed the weed killer. I also waxed the floors in two rooms upstairs. So, we will spend one night in Atami and then back home to relax and wax some more. How about you? How will you spend GW?
April 29th is Japan's National holiday, Showa no hi. This day leads Japan into Golden Week, a succession of holidays. When Saturdays and Sundays are included, this week becomes one of the longest holidays of the year. The weather is warm and suitable for excursions at this time, therefore many Japanese make trips during Golden Week and it is one of the busiest travel times.
Showa no hi (Showa Day) April 29:
