How to...

How to...throw out the garbage.  I am in charge of taking out the trash. There are three main trash locations in our house. Two are baskets. One is in the living room and one is in the wash room. They hold a lot of paper and tissue. The third is the biggest. It is a trash bag hung on the handle of the door below the sink. This one receives much raw garbage such as seeds, peelings from vegetables or fruit, animal fat, bones, soiled plastic, paper or wrap. For some people these are ingredients for a compost for their vegetable garden. It smells bad after not too long. On garbage day (Monday and Thursday for us) I collect the bags from these three places and then replace the bags with new ones. Sometimes, the kitchen bag becomes full ahead of schedule. On an off day (not garbage day) I will put that one in the bin we have outside. Finally I throw away the trash from the car and upstairs, if any. I then take the garbage to the garbage location (see pic) usually on foot, occasionally by bicycle and once in a great while by car. The location is 50 meters from our house.

Blood Donation

I went to the Omiya Red Cross Blood Donation Center right after the circus. That was the third time for me to donate blood this year. They have a system to remind donors (people who donate) when it is possible to donate again. You have to wait about 4 months between donations. And you can only donate three times a year. So, when 4 months have passed they send you a post card to remind you. It is helpful because I sometimes forget. They give you the postcard while you are waiting to go home after donating. As a rule, you have to wait about 10 to 15 minutes after donating before you can leave. They want you to relax and make sure (ascertain) that you do not have any ill effects from the donation. Ill effects means, dizziness or upset stomach or bleeding, perhaps. This time I drank two cups of corn soup and ate a cookie and two O-senbes. They are all complimentary (free). I waited almost 20 minutes, took a couple of photos, and got my free gifts before leaving.  One gift is a half handkerchief and the other is a folder. You get these when you bring the postcard with you to donate. You should try donating blood.

Circus revisited

I went to the POP Circus with Miwako and her mom a month ago. It was so much fun. I laughed a lot and was amazed by the performances. I thoroughly (completely) enjoyed it. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to go again. Last Sunday, M was off to Tokyo to meet a friend for lunch. I asked my friend Mark if he would like to go to the circus with me. He said OK and we got the tickets on line for the 10/23 1:10PM show. The show was almost exactly the same as before. The order of the performances was the same. The gags and he costumes were the same. This time my seat was different, but very near the ring. (The ring is where the performances take place.) And after seeing the show twice I have mixed emotions. The first time was more exciting because I didn't know what was going to happen. The second time was interesting because I saw some more detail and could watch the performers more closely. However my main goal was to see the Zebra Dog act again. The zebra ran in a circle in the ring twice. Actually there a small dog inside the zebra costume. I was fascinated by the way he ran in the exact same route the first time and then this time. The dog was quite professional.

Sports Day Festival

I teach at the Higashi Kindergarten in Okegawa every Tuesday morning. I have been teaching there for over ten years. I remember the first time I attended their Sports Day festival. It was outside at a park. It was a beautiful day. I even ran in one of the races. The next year the festival was rained out. And then about six years ago they moved the festival to the Sun Arena. This is very near my house and it is where I go to work out at the gym. Higashi Kindergarten rents or borrows different parking places near the Arena and they never have to be concerned about (worry about) the weather. I go every year. But my schedule has changed over the years so I was only able to watch the fun for one hour. I took a lot of photos and met many teachers. As usual they are very, very busy. I saw a lot of action. It was a lot of fun. I also met many kids who used to go to the Kindergarten (see pic). That is, I used to teach them there. I also picked up the hair wig that I will use this Friday at the Mida Kindergarten for Halloween.

Winter Clothes Dilemma

It's getting cooler. And soon it will be cold. It is time to get out the winter clothes and put away the summer ones (clothes/wear). Recently this has become  a challenge. Why?  Because my weight is never the same. That started 5 years ago. When I turned 60 (years old), I decided to quit drinking alcohol for one year. That was in 2011. My weight was always 75 to 77 kilograms. To tell the truth, many years ago it was up in the 80s! So, for a long time I wore the same clothes. However when I stopped drinking I lost 12 kilograms in one year. My lowest weight 63.8 kilograms. One guy told me that I was too skinny. Then I went back to drinking. Since then I have regained all the weight that I lost. Every year I have gained about 2.5 kilograms. So, now I am back to 74-75 kilograms. Going to the gym has helped me lose body fat but not weight. So, when I look at my winter clothes, I see things I could wear 2 or 3 years ago that I cannot wear now. Should I throw them away? Or should I try to lose weight and get down to70 kilograms? I think that is my best weight. What a dilemma!
These kids playing Super Scrabble at my school have no weight problems.

A, B, C, D. E, F, G

I teach at the Mida Kindergarten on Fridays. Their Sports Day festival just ended and now they are preparing for their Kindergarten Show. They have a large auditorium so they will do it there. Last week I went to teach the Nen-Shos. Those are the youngest kids. They are 3 and 4 years old. They are so young. They don't understand too much, especially English. My lessons must be fun and fast. There are 3 groups. The lessons are only 15 minutes which is best. They told me to teach the kids the ABC song. They will sing it on stage at the Kindergarten Show. At first I thought "Impossible!" Those little people will never be able to do it! BUT, the teachers were all very positive and enthusiastic about it. I hoped they would change to the "Old McDonald" song (my favorite) but they said "No, we must do the ABC song." So, we started. And little by little I found (realized/discovered) that the kids can do it. I practiced with the kids and teachers at the three lesson and the last one was best. Many kids (half?) already knew the song. We will practice again tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it. A B C D E F G.............

Shoulder pains

My main goal at the gym is to lose body fat. For this, I use three machines; they are running, a cross walker and a step machine. My second goal is to strengthen my waist and back muscles. For this, I do sit-ups and reverse sit-ups. I am very pleased with the results. However my arms are very weak. So, I decided to do some arm exercises. Things went well at first but then I increased the weights. It seems I damaged something in my left shoulder near the shoulder blade. So, I stopped (quit) doing those exercises. Then the pain went away in June. I resumed the exercises and made the same mistake. The pain returned and is still there. It has been more than two months now. I thought maybe it was from the violin. Or perhaps it was from the A/C which is directly behind me at my school. (I use it when I BLOG!) Or maybe it was a combination of all three. It hurts badly when I ride my bicycle. Why? I don't know. So, I quit (stopped) doing my early AM stretching. I also stopped doing the arm muscle training at the gym. I set the A/C so it is in a different direction; not on my back. But I CANNOT stop my violin practise. My shoulder is much better now. But it is not completely healed. I still have to be careful.

The Gym

I needed to lose some body fat. I used to jog but I was getting pain in my left knee so I decided to quit (stop) that. As always, I was dieting with no results. It was in March that I decided to go to the gym. One of my students told me that the Sunshine City building in Okegawa has a gym in it. Actually I became a member there about ten years ago. However I only went for a couple of months and quit. So I started going in late March. I was very happy with the results after only two weeks. At first, the instructor explained many things to me. I decided which equipment to use and then I made a schedule for myself using mostly the running equipment. Because this equipment has soft running boards there is not as much damage to my knees as there was on the streets outside. I usually stay about 2 hours. I always buy a monthly pass. It is economical (cheap/money-saving) as long as you go more than seven times a month. I average 12 visits a month. I use their shower. In June I started using the training equipment to build arm strength. The bad news is that I hurt my shoulder. I will explain about that tomorrow.

EGYZ Part 2

We made our get-away (departure) at 6PM Saturday. It only takes a couple of hours to get to the EchiGoYuZawa Grandie. At first we went to the KanMura restaurant. We have been there twice before. We probably won't go there again for a variety of reasons. One reason is that the restaurant at the resort mansion is very good. Anyway, we checked in about 10PM. Our room was on the 4th floor of the old building. (There is a new annex). We went  directly to the spa. It was nice but rather small. On Sunday we relaxed all day. We went to the spa in the annex. There were lots of kids in the hotel but they had plenty of other activities to do. Halloween is approaching (coming soon) so there were lots of decorations and events for the youngsters. On Sunday we discussed some business, went to the annex spa (It is much larger than the old spa), had lunch, played Super Scrabble (it was M's first time!), went to the Karaoke room, and then back to the spa. We decided to leave early the next day in order to avoid any major traffic jams. We departed at 10:30AM. We took a drive to the AkaGiSan Shrine. It is on O-Numa in Gunma. I enjoyed driving GOLF there through the winding mountain roads. After lunch and an ice cream M drove home. We got back at 4PM, unpacked then more relaxing. The end.

EchiGoYuZawa

We are very fortunate (lucky). We can stay in a Resort Mansion in Atami or Inatori or EchiGo YuZawa cheaply. We have been to Atami a number of times, perhaps 8 or 9. We have stayed in Inatori which is near Shimoda a few times, too. These are both on the sea. We went to EchiGoYuZawa only once before. We went again last weekend. Let me explain the differences between these lodgings.
1. Inatori is 4 hours away from our house. The other two are only two hours away. There is one restaurant here. The resort is high on the hill side with a nice view of the ocean. If you want to buy supplies (food and drinks) you have to go by car. They have a parking lot which charges 60en/hour. The best beaches (Shimoda) are nearby. They have a nice spa. Not many families come here.
2. Atami is two hours away from our house. There was one restaurant inside but it closed several years ago. The area is a small local town. There is a nice beach 10 minutes away on foot. Many families come here. The rooms are large. They have a gym, pools and a karaoke room. Parking is 500en per day. They also have a huge lobby with a full ocean view.
3. EchiGoYuZawa is a ski resort. There are two restaurants and two spas. There is a large coin laundry room. There is a Game room, a gym. outdoor and indoor pools. The rooms are small and the kids can sleep in the closets! And there are lots and lots of families here. It is in the mountains. There is not much outside the resort. So, everything you need is inside. There is a very big souvenir shop and it includes a lot of daily necessities.
We stayed at EchiGoYuZawa Grande resort mansion. I will tell you about that tomorrow.

Sports Day Part 2

This info is cool also.
The second Monday of October is Taiiku no Hi, or Sports Day, a national holiday to foster healthy minds and bodies through physical activity. It was established to commemorate the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, which were held from October 10 to 24. It was designated a national holiday two years later in 1966. Until 1999 the holiday was on October 10, but beginning in 2000 it has been changed to the second Monday of the month.
Why were the 1964 Games held in October, which is quite late for the Summer Games? The biggest reason was the weather. It had to be just right to accommodate athletes from both warm countries and cold countries. And compared to other cities that had hosted the Games of the Olympiad until then, Tokyo was very rainy. The summer months are hot and humid, moreover, while the weather in spring tends to be very unstable. Early autumn is the height of the typhoon season and is marked by heavy downpours.
So the organizers of the Tokyo Games asked meteorologists when would be the best time to hold an outdoor sports event. The answer was mid-October, since by then, the typhoons stop coming, and the skies turn a deep, clear blue. Based on this recommendation, the organizers chose an unusually late date for the Summer Games. Much to the organizers' relief, the Opening Ceremonies were staged under a brilliant, cloudless sky.

Sports Day Part 1

I got this info for the Internet.
Every year, in spring or autumn, school kids all over Japan, from kindergarten through high school, take part in sports day. On this day, athletic meets are held to give kids a chance to test their skills and compete with each other in a variety of events. It is also a great chance for the whole family to enjoy fun time together. This is particularly true of elementary school meets, where large numbers of families often come out to cheer on the kids.
There are two basic kinds of events - individual and group. A running race is an example of an individual event. Group events, where students are divided into teams, include tug-of-war, and ball-tossing games. Kids usually compete against those of the same grade, but there are also relay races between teams made up of kids from all grades.
Some schools also include non-competitive events like folk or traditional Japanese dancing. At the high-school level, students do more than just compete in sports events; cheering contests are often held in which each class makes up its own cheers, adding even more energy to this exciting day.

Violin Q & A

As I wrote last week, we went to a classical concert in Ikebukuro two Sundays ago. It was fabulous. We sat in the 5th row from the front right (directly) in front of the violin section. Of course, the violin is my favorite instrument. I watched the violinists (and the cellists) very closely. It was interesting to see that all the players had a different styles of playing. Most of them were similar but several were very different. Anyway, I had my violin lesson this Monday. I asked my teacher some questions.
Question: How do they choose the seating arrangement for the violinists?
Answer: The concert master (main violinist) decides the seating. Generally, the best players are in front and in the back. The newcomers (rookies) are in the middle so they can learn.
Question: Why are the playing styles different?
Answer: Each person is unique so they find their own comfortable way....especially men!
Question: How do they decide the "music sheet turner"?
Answer: Again, the concert master decides this. Actually he/she decides everything. He is basically the manager.
My teacher also told me that the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra all play exactly alike (see pic). That is their training. She said that it is very beautiful and quite amazing. You can check it out on YouTube.

The Circus Part 2

There were about 250 spectators (customers) in the audience for the 1:10 Sunday performance. There are three areas to sit in. There is the left side, the right side and the middle. There are also a variety of seats to choose from. At this show almost everybody was in the middle seats. As I said yesterday the show was fantastic. First of all, all of the performers are professional. So, they are all in excellent physical shape. That means they all look like Olympic gymnasts! On stage, people were running, jumping, dancing, flying, balancing, climbing, spinning, falling, smiling, laughing, clapping and cheering. Everyone was busy. One time, they brought out 6 or 7 huge balloons for the audience to pass around. They also had this really cool smoke ring blower. It was non-stop action. And again, there were no animals except for one little one. And he was amazing! I cannot explain here what he did. You really should go to see this circus. You will not be disappointed. I plan to go once more. I told many students about this circus and several have told me that they have discount tickets. I wonder if I will get one?

The Circus Part 1

The circus is in town. We spent a quiet weekend at home last weekend. But, M wanted to take her mother out for a treat, just to get some fresh air. A week ago we saw the circus tents next to Ario when we passed by in our car. Miwako checked the Internet and got the info about the circus. Have you ever been to a circus? We went once with our family 15 or 20 years ago. This one is different. The PR flyer lists these attractions: JUGGLING, FLYING TRAPEZE, HOOP MANIPULATION, AERIAL HOOP, RIBBON ACROBATS, DEATHWHEEL, ILLUSION, but there was much more. The two CLOWNS were always present. There was a four-man band. There was a tenor saxophone, a guitar, percussions and a keyboard.  The performers are from many countries around the world. I think most were European. There was one group from Africa. One group of very young girls was from China. The two Jugglers were from Mexico. The clowns were German or American. Let me tell you about some of the excitement in tomorrow's BLOG.

My September

I had a fabulous September. Here is a recap.
1. Went to the gym nine times. I hoped to go more but I had a special job in Omiya on Thursday afternoons. That is my usual gym time.
2. Taught special English course for adults at Omiya's Sakuragi Chou Kominkan. It was the first three Thursdays.
3. Karaoke Party in Omiya at Warehouse with the Wednesday FUN ENGLISH students.
4. Dinner party then Karaoke with the students from Saturday's Kenkatsu class.
5. Climbed Mt. Takao with a few adult students.
6. Miwako and I had a meeting with the folks at Matsubara Culture Club in Kawaguchi. We hope to do the lessons at the kindergarten there next year.
7. Saw I-AI Dou competition at the Ageo KenRitsu BuDouKan. It was excellent.
8. Met German friend, Bertold, and his lovely wife, Keiko, for dinner at Azumakura.
9. Went to a classical music concert by Yomiuri Philharmonic in Ikebukuro.
10. Picked all the weeds next door for 2 days and then applied weed killer. It looks real nice now.
11. My violin mentor came to help me with some violin basics.
12. Study NZ HAKA with friend, Mark, and then Miwako joined us for beer and yakitori at ToriShin.
I guess that is all. I am pretty sure that I will be less busy this month.
Souvenir from Bertold. That beer is 1,000 mls.
