Japanese KABUKI

Kabuki is a traditional Japanese form of theater with roots tracing back to the Edo Period. It is recognized as one of Japan's three major classical theaters along with noh and bunraku, and has been named as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
I saw my first Kabuki play long, long ago. It was before I got married. I don't remember very much about it but I don't think it was interesting. A couple of months ago I decided that I want to see a Kabuki play again. I talked it over (discussed it) with Miwako and she decided that she wanted to go also. So she bought the tickets on-line and we went during my vacation time. The tickets cost about as much as an S-seat for a classical concert or a live play on stage. We went  August 14th. Since it was O-Bon we left home a couple of hours early. We didn't want to be late. We did some shopping there first and then went to our seats at 5:30 when the doors opened. There were two plays. The performance was so cool! I didn't rent any translation device or a LED reader in English. I wanted to absorb (take in) everything by sight. The costumes were beautiful. The actions were unique. The music and chants were fantastic. The stage and sets and comings and goings of the actors were wonderful. I really want to go again.

Atami Trip Part 3 Typhoon

We have to check out at 11AM from the resort. We also have to clean everything up. We have to wash the dishes and cups that we use and throw away our own garbage. The room has to look just as it was when we arrived, but no worries. The bad news was that there was this huge typhoon blowing wind and rain everywhere. We couldn't leave yet. The good news was that the RIO 2016 Olympic closing ceremonies were on TV. We watched all of that while waiting to leave. I had never seen an entire closing ceremony and it was very interesting. That finished around 10AM. We checked out at 11AM. It was raining and very windy. But, we had to get back home. Do you use a car Navi (navigation device)? We did not buy one for our car. We use Miwako's smart phone Navi. It is great! It is updated every day, I believe. So, when we headed for Atami, the Navi told us to go to the mountains instead of the coast highway. There was a huge traffic jam in Atami. We drove up to the Hakone Pass. It was pouring rain and extremely (very, very) windy so I drove carefully. But, there was no flooding up here. The Navi reported flooding down below and some flooding on the Ken-Ou Highway so "she" directed us to Tokyo. It took about four hours but we got home safe and sound.

Atami trip Part 2 Fireworks

Atami City puts on (does) five firework shows (displays) every year. There are four  in the summer. We got back from Shimoda at 4PM and checked in to the Resort. I took a quick bath at the spa and then we set out for Atami city. We took a local bus. We made our way to the waterfront. It was a very lively place indeed! There were so many kinds of food and drinks. There were live stage performances. It was electric! We had  purchased (bought) tickets on-line for seats on the steps of the pavilion. They were 1,000en each. Next door was the free seating and that became very crowded. We waited 2 and a half hours and the display finally started with a countdown and then BAM! the show began. It was a FANTASTIC show of fireworks with beautiful colors and loud, loud BOOMs. Some fireworks exploded high in the sky. Some were very near the ground and went off in order. Some were big and some were small. Some danced in the sky; some swirled; some made whistling sounds. They were all so beautiful and exciting that I couldn't control myself. I just had to laugh. I felt like a little kid. The show lasted only 30 minutes. We left with everyone else and found our bus soon. We were back at the resort in 30 minutes. I definitely look forward to coming here again next year.

Atami Trip Part 1 Shimoda

We left home at 8:30AM on Sunday. My first lesson starts at 5PM on Monday so I basically have two days off. Driving was easy. As always we used M's phone navi. We had reservations at the ANGEL RESORT in Atami. We always stay there because it is very inexpensive (cheap) for us. We arrived here at 11AM which was too early to check in. So, we made a "pit stop" (toilet break) and continued on to Shimoda. I love Shimoda beach. The sandy beach is white and soft, the sea is blue and relaxing and the girls are young and bikinied! One goal was to look at the girls. Oh, sorry. One goal was to swim in that beautiful surf. The second goal was to eat ALOE soft cream. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to get to the ALOE soft cream place. The other bad news was that swimming was not allowed due to (because of) the high surf. This was caused by a typhoon. But we came so far that I had to make the effort to swim there. We found a small protected beach. I was able to get in there and swim for five minutes. It was wonderful! I also spotted some very interesting bikinis. The photo is actually from Atami Fireworks Show.

American movies

American movies are ... uninteresting. American movies are ... ridiculous. American movies are .... just plain bad. I am an American. I have seen many movies made in the USA during my lifetime. And generally, they are not good, especially these days. I have some free time now.  I teach at three kindergartens and the kindergartens are closed for the summer. So, I thought I would relax at the movie theater. It has been a long time since I went to see a movie. The first was bad. It was Independence Day. The CGs were OK, but not good enough to satisfy me. The second movie I saw was Ghost Busters. TIME magazine said it was cool. I liked the original Ghost Busters. But this one was just stupid. Then I went to see Jungle Book. The original Disney animation is excellent. I really like it. But this new one only seemed interested in making CGs. The story was too simple and the dialog was "as old as the hills". That means very, very old. (My mother always said that.) So, I struck out at the movies. I will probably never go to see another  movie made in the USA again.

Kurobe Dam

We left Karuizawa and headed for Kurobe dam in Toyama. This was our first drive to this spot. so, it is an adventure.  Miwako used the car navi on her phone. When we left Karuizawa at 10:30 in the morning a lot of cars were lined up to get into this place. We used the highway at first. We drove it for over an hour. Then we got off the highway and drove on some very winding and up and down mountain roads. I was lovin it! It took close to 4 hours, including a lunch stop, but we got to the dam safely. We parked and got on a trolley bus to the top of the dam. This bus goes through the mountain. Actually there were six buses, and we were the only passengers on one of them. It was beautiful at the top. We were fortunate (lucky) to have such fine weather. We stayed up there for about 90 minutes. There were not so many people there but I did talk to a guy from Holland. We got the second from last bus back down, bought some souvenirs and soft drinks and started back home. I drove the one hour to the hi-way and then Miwako took over for the final three hours home. All in all, it was an excellent trip, indeed!

Mampei Hotel

John and Yoko stayed at this fantastic hotel. It is expensive. It is old and classic, elegant and clean. The first thing that amazed us was our room. It was HUGE. And the bathroom was HUGE. The bath was my size. I could stretch my legs out completely!  I used it three times during the stay. And  the amenities! The toothbrush they supplied (had for us) is better than the toothbrush I brought from home. The soap is in a box. The toothpaste will last me at least a week. We went down for dinner at 5:50. We waited in the lobby. At exactly 6PM a uniformed employee walked out of the dining room into the lobby, playing a glockenspiel. He played the same simple tune 4 or 5 times. It announced dinner time. We had French cuisine. The dining room was HUGE but only half full. Everything was elegant. The dinner was delicious. Back at our room we watched an old TORA-san movie and the Olympics. The next morning we had a Japanese breakfast. I had O-kayu instead of rice. It came with a sweet sauce. Again delicious. Then we went out on the porch to enjoy the scenery and have coffee and a blueberry tart before checking out. Every morning I enjoy writing in my diary. The room desk was very fine and the lamp was especially nice. This was a special treat for me. Now, we can say Rick and Miwako stayed at this fantastic hotel.

Karuizawa

Karuizawa is an upmarket mountain resort at the foot of the active volcano Mount Asama in Nagano Prefecture. Located at an altitude of roughly 1000 meters, the town provides a pleasant escape from the summer heat. It was first "discovered" and promoted as a mountain resort by Western residents of Japan in the late 1800s. Today, many wealthy urbanites own a second home there. Thanks to the Hokuriku Shinkansen it takes little more than an hour to reach Karuizawa from central Tokyo.
Various outdoor activities, such as tennis, hiking, cycling, golfing in summer and skiing and ice skating in winter can be enjoyed in Karuizawa, and there are ample shopping opportunities. Karuizawa is located along Japan's Romantic Road, and it offers nice autumn colors typically around mid October to early November each year.
We went to Karuizawa long ago when our kids were small. This time Miwako and I went by ourselves. Why Karuizawa? We planned a three night trip to SadogaShima in August. But we had to abandon that plan because of health issues of grandma. So, we decided to take the money we didn't spend and splurge! we stayed one night at the MAMPEI hotel. (John Lennon and Yoko Ono stayed here, don't you know?) It was fantastic!
We left home at 9:30 Tuesday morning and arrived two hours later. We parked the car and then checked out the famous shopping areas here. Our first stop was for lunch at a café on the street. Then three hours of cruising and shopping. We bought this, that and the other and then back to check into this fabulous hotel. More tomorrow.

Douglas

This is a photo of Douglas and Toshi. Douglas is an American living and working in Saipan. I met him in Fujinami, where I live, a couple of years ago. At that time I went to the AKI Matsuri at the local Temple. It's a pretty small place. And there he was. A very unlikely scenario; two gaijins at this small festival! What a coincidence. Unbelievable, I would say. Anyway, his wife is Japanese. Her family is from Fujinami. They have rice fields and gardens here. Douglas comes twice a year to help out in the fields. At that festival I also met Toshi. He is related to Douglas by marriage. Toshi's wife and Douglas' wife are cousins. It's a small world indeed. Now, Toshi is my student. Thank you very much. Sometimes when Douglas comes to visit Fujinami the three of us get together. He is a very likeable guy and he likes to drink. So do I. So does Toshi. Last year we went to Futaba for dinner and drinks. This year we went to a new place very near Okegawa station on the west side. Afterwards Douglas and I went back to Fujinami by taxi. I wonder where Toshi went.

Warning Final

July 7, 2016

The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo cautions U.S. citizens that Super Typhoon NEPARTAK is expected to make landfall near Ishigakijima in Okinawa Prefecture at approximately 1500 JST on July 7, 2016, and then move on to Yonaguni Island in Okinawa Prefecture before continuing further west.  In conjunction with this storm, the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a High Wave and Thunderstorm advisory for all of Okinawa Prefecture.  Expect extremely high winds, dangerous storm tides, heavy rainfall, and possible flooding to occur.

The Japan Meteorological Service’s Typhoon tracking information may be found in English at this webpage:  http://www.jma.go.jp/en/typh/.  Kadena Airbase also has tropical cyclone forecast information at  https://shogunweather.com/tropicalcycloneforecast/.  The current Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness (TCCOR) for U.S. military installations on Okinawa may be found here:  https://shogunweather.com/tccor)

All U.S. citizens living in or traveling to the area should monitor local weather reports, follow directions from local officials, and take other appropriate actions as needed.

Warning Number 2 of 2

To help make sure you are one of them, follow these simple tips:
If you are going out to bars or nightclubs, consider leaving your credit and debit cards in the hotel safe as criminals focus on people who are paying with cards.  Carry cash securely, and take only as much cash as you are planning to spend.
Do not go clubbing alone!  Take a friend, and stay together.
Do not tell strangers about your travel plans!  Criminals target visitors who are departing Japan within 24-72 hours, since they are less likely to report the crime to police.
Never enter a bar or club that employs a street hawker to draw in customers!   Some establishments, especially in entertainment areas that cater to foreign clientele, put touts on the street to drum up business.  These touts can be very aggressive, and many incidents reported to the Embassy have taken place in establishments that use them.  If you meet one, it’s best to move on.
Do not accept an invitation for a free drink!  In many incidents reported to the Embassy, touts have used offers of free drinks as an enticement.
Keep an eye on your drink!  Drink spiking at bars and entertainment venues has led to credit card fraud, robbery and even physical and sexual assaults.  Remain vigilant even if you are in a seemingly safe bar.
Know when to say when!  Criminals single out intoxicated persons as easy victims.
Obey the law!  Remember that possession or use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, are serious crimes in Japan.  Convictions for drug offenses result in lengthy sentences.

If you believe you have been a victim of a crime, contact the police right away.  In cases of credit card fraud you must file a police report at the nearest police station before you leave Japan. The Japanese police do not provide you a copy of the police report, but they issue a report number. You can provide this report number to your credit card company in order to confirm the incident with the police.  The Japanese police cannot accept reports filed from overseas.

Warning Number 1 of 2

I receive e-mails from the USA government sometimes because I am a US citizen living abroad. I registered to get them. I got this mail last week. I will post it today and over the weekend as the Puzzler is on vacation. Enjoy.
 U. S. Embassy Tokyo
Security Message for U.S. Citizens:
71st Anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki Bombings

August 5, 2016

On Saturday, August 6 and Tuesday, August 9 between approximately 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM, demonstrations are expected at the U.S. Embassy and surrounding areas to call attention to the anniversaries of the Word War II bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  Monday, August 15, which marks the end of the war, may also draw protests from various groups.

During these annual events, the protestors drive around the Embassy and surrounding areas in approximately 100 to 200 vehicles, making pronouncements through loudspeakers attached to the roofs.  These vehicles will likely disrupt traffic flow in adjacent streets.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.  Please be aware of your surroundings if you enter or depart the embassy or consulates.

The gnome Part 2

Gnomes age slowly. So, after 20 years the gnome was still a child. But, he had revenge on his mind. He set out to find the little girl who he believed cut off his hand. So, he goes wandering around countryside where he first met the girl. But, he became very hungry and tired, He happened upon (came to/arrived at) a bakery. He smelled the delicious bread being baked inside. He went in. He found a pretty young lady there. He said that he was very hungry but had no money. The young lady said "I will give you some bread if you sing me a song." So, he did. And what do you think? He sang the same melody that he did twenty years earlier. The young lady was so surprised she said that she heard that song long ago when she got a new tool to cut grass. And she gave him some bread. The gnome knew then: This was the girl who had cut off his hand! When he told her that he came to hurt her because of what she did to his hand she was surprised. "Do you really think I would do that?" Now, the gnome was surprised. Of course this kind young lady couldn't do such a thing. It was unthinkable. He felt ashamed that he believed this bad thing about her. He felt better that he didn't have to cut off her hand for revenge. Everyone lived happily ever after. The end. The picture is the gnome's home near Kurobe Dam.

The gnome Part 1

I read another story for my Japanese kids book. This one is about a gnome. Gnomes do not age. They stay young for a long, long time. Gnomes can do magic. But, it takes a long time to learn how to do the magic. In this story a gnome helped a poor little girl. She was adopted. She was also very kind and sweet and gentle. Her adoptive mother and sister were mean (not nice) to her. She and her sister had to cut grass every day for the animals. But, the adopted girl had a very old and dull tool for cutting. So it took her a long time to cut and she came home late every day. The little girl wanted a new tool. The gnome hid behind a tree. He sang a song so the girl could hear him. She asked him for a new tool. The gnome gave her a new tool with his magic. Now the girl cold cut grass faster than her sister. This made the mother very angry. The mother found the gnome and cut off his hand! (I was very surprised to read that.) But the gnome thought that very kind and sweet and gentle little girl did it! So, the gnome plotted his revenge against her. Twenty years passed. The gnome learned one new magic and set out to find the girl. Come back tomorrow.

Health Spa

Miwako and I went to the SeiGanJi health Spa in Saitama City last Saturday night. We went there once maybe 12 years ago or so. I am unsure when it was. I am not really a big fan of these spas. But, they are everywhere. So, I thought that I would like to visit one just to check it out. I went to the gym on Friday and did my usual workout. I went again Saturday to work out again. So, I wanted to relax. I had a quick dish of Chinese summer noodles at home and then we drove there. We went on a road I haven't used in very many years. It brought back some memories. Anyway the spa was full of people. There are many kinds of spas both indoors and outdoors. I used the sauna and the cold bath afterward. The only unusual thing for me (or any westerner) was when the cleaning lady walked through the spa checking on things. She completely ignores all the nude men and boys and we all ignore her. You would never find that in my home country, the good old USA. All in all, I must say that I enjoyed the spa immensely.

Kids' Lesson

The InaChuOu Kominkan asked me to do two kids lessons this summer. The dates were July 26th and August 2nd. This is my third year doing these lessons. I did the two kids lessons and all went well. There were no unexpected happenings or difficulties However, a couple of kids were a tad bit (a little) unruly. There were 19 kids the first lesson and then 16 kids the second. Most were 1st and 2nd graders. The first lesson we concentrated on ABCs. They had paper so they practiced writing. The climax this day was ABC BINGO. It is one of my original lessons. I usually do it a kindergartens, and it worked well here. The second lesson was about number sand colors. This time we practiced more conversation. The climax this day was the 0 to 100 number cards game. The 16 kids sat in a circle on their chairs. Then  I dealt the cards one by one. The kids then read the cards in order from 0 to 100. They threw the cards into the center of the circle as they read their cards. Unfortunately, the director of he Kominkan would not allow me to use pictures of he kids in this BLOG. So, it's only me. Sorry.

Independence Day Resurgence

I was very busy last Sunday. I slept in late then I weeded the garden then I practiced my violin then I read my magazine. I talked it over with Miwako and we decided to go see a movie. We decided on Independence Day Resurgence. There weren't many good choices. I also knew that this movie is a typical "made in USA" flick (film/movie). That means I know all the dialogs before they happen. I also know who will die. I also know who will fall in love with whom after about ten minutes into the film. I got two revues from two students. One said it was bad. One said it was great. The latter explained that the CG (computer Graphics) were fantastic. So, we went to see it for the CG. We also got a couples' discount so that made it OK. We only paid 1,000en each. We booked on-line. Every seat was available! We went to Omiya Aeon to see it. There were many 15 people there. The movie started. Miwako fell asleep immediately. I watched. The CGs were good. Unfortunately there were not enough to make the film worth seeing. I really want to see Ghost Busters though.

Saturday Night

At the beginning of July one student suggested that we go out to dinner and drinks some Saturday night. This is not unusual for this group. Of course, I seconded the motion (agreed). We talked about it over the next couple of weeks. That leader made the reservations at a restaurant in Omiya. It is in the Omiya Shino building behind the Sonic City Building. I got a ride by car to my Kenkatsu lessons. They finished at 4:45 and three of us walked to the New Shuttle station. We arrived Omiya and we went directly to a standing/drinking bar for "primers". "Primers" are drinks that help you prepare for the real (serious) drinking. We then went to the restaurant. Excellent! The name is REN. It was unknown to me. But it was excellent. Lots of unique dished and plenty of sake. As a matter of fact there was too much sake for me. I tried so many. There were nine of us and I think all had a good time. Finally four of us went to Karaoke. I don't remember too much of that. I enjoyed it though. Thanks, everyone.

Shopping

So, after washing the car last Friday, I bicycled to my school and then made a trip to Omiya by train. I needed to buy a few things. My destination was SOGO department store. It is on the west side of the station. I have been there hundreds of times but not recently. As a matter of fact, it is highly unlikely that I go there unless it is for shopping. I needed to buy a vacuum cleaner. It is a hand held type. My cat leaves a lot of fur around, especially on the stairs. I tried a wet mop type which is what M uses. It is not my style. I used our regular vacuum but it is cumbersome (difficult/awkward to use). I also used that one to vacuum the car that AM. I found a handheld one. I had some BIC points so I used them and purchased it. Success. Then I bought a pair of binoculars. I use them only sometimes but they are nice to have just in case. I also bought some stationery goods and then had lunch. I ate a rice omelet. I was back home by 1PM. Nice shopping, I thought.

Car wash

I went to the gym last Thursday and considered (thought about) going again Friday morning. You see, I am free on Friday mornings until September. I have a Kindergarten class then. But, I thought and thought and decided that it was unnecessary to go. Instead I got up early and was outside about 6:45 to wash GOLF. I hadn't washed the car since July 3rd. I thought about going to the car wash. Nope. I made up my mind to wash the car at the house. That means a lot of preparation and then a lot of cleanup. It was cloudy at first. Unfortunately the sun came out of the clouds soon and made it hot. But, I continued. I rinsed the car then washed it and rinsed it again. I actually enjoy washing the wheels and windows. I like it when they are clean. I then got the vacuum cleaner and did a thorough job on the interior. It took over an hour but it looked real nice when I finished. I then went shopping; by train. See tomorrow's BLOG for that story.
